The Baader Morpheus 9mm Eyepiece 76° Alpine Astronomicalis designed to deliver the performance that avid amateur astronomers and astrophotographers require for near and deep sky use. Outfitted with a wide 76° field of view, it presents an immersive observational experience while ensuring slow-moving deep sky objects remain in the eyepiece view for a long time when observing through non-motorized telescopes like conventional Dobsonians.

A combination of flat-field lens design, lens coatings, and internal baffling and blackening ensure bright and clear views with limited distortion across the entire field of view, especially at the edges. To further improve the viewing experience, the standard round fold-down eyecup can be removed and replaced with the provided winged eyecup to eliminate peripheral light and improve contrast and resolution.

Integrated 1.25" and 2" barrels make this eyepiece compatible with the two most common holders, drawtubes, and accessories, without having to switch sleeves when moving from one optical tube assembly (OTA) or set of accessories to another. For ease of use, all the Morpheus eyepieces are parfocal with each other so there is little to no need to refocus when changing eyepieces within the series. To help you find the right eyepiece without needing a flashlight, the focal length is engraved on the housing and colored with photoluminescent paint that glows a faint green. Additionally, a stainless steel clip is included that attaches to the eyepiece holster and lets you bend up one or more small tabs to quickly identify an eyepiece by touch. All these features eliminate the need for a flashlight, which can affect night-adjusted vision and prevent you from seeing dim objects.

Useful for more than just visual observation, the eyepiece has 43mm T-mount threads under the eyecup that accept camera-specific T-rings for direct connection of CCD imaging systems. A 43mm extension ring is provided that can be attached to the integrated threads for the T-ring and provide more back focus if the camera requires it.

  • 9mm focal length produces a moderate magnification for general-purpose viewing of near and deep sky objects. Also useful during alignment, slewing, and centering of objects
  • 8-element/5-group lens design produces a flat and even field of view with limited edge distortion
  • Wide 76° field of view is greater than the human eye to provide an immersive and full view without compromising contrast and brightness, while allowing deep sky objects to remain in the eyepiece view longer when using non-motorized telescopes like Dobsonians
  • Long 21mm eye relief makes viewing easy and comfortable with reduced eye fatigue, especially during long viewing sessions
  • Phantom Coating Group multi-coatings are index matched to the specific optical properties of the glass used in the lenses to optimize light transmission, color rendition, and contrast with minimal distortion
  • Internal baffling and blackened edges help to limit internal reflection and absorb diffracted light to further improve contrast and resolution
  • Parfocal with all Morpheus eyepieces, requiring little to no refocusing when changing eyepieces within the series

  • Photoluminescent paint in engraved focal length on housing glows faintly green in the dark to allow easy identification without the need for a flashlight, which can disrupt night-adjusted vision
  • Integrated 1.25" and 2" barrels allow eyepiece to fit the two most popular size drawtubes, holders, and accessories without switching sleeves
  • Metal 43mm T-mount threads under eyecup allow direct connection of cameras and CCD imagers using optional T-rings
  • Textured slip-resistant collar provides secure handling in cold weather or while wearing gloves
  • Fold-down round conventional eyecup for easy use with or without eyewear; winged eyecup can be installed to eliminate peripheral light to improve contrast and resolution while blocking distractions for better concentration
  • Slim body design makes the eyepiece ideal for bino-viewers as it allows a narrow interpupillary setting for children, young adults, and those with smaller faces

Extension tube:

  • 43mm tube optimizes the position of the eyecup for personal preference during viewing
  • Use for adapting a camera with M43 thread for astrophotography and add more back focus versus the integrated 43mm threads under the eyecup
  • Used as the primary clamping surface for smartphone digiscoping adapters
Focal length indicator clip:
  • Stainless steel for durability and longevity
  • Bend one or more of the small tabs up to indicate the eyepiece focal length
  • Clips to the eyepiece holster and lets you identify the eyepieces by touch, eliminating the need for flashlights that can disrupt night-adjusted vision
Carrying case:
  • High-visibility yellow is easy to see in the dark
  • Touch-fastener top flap retains eyepiece while moving around and setting up
  • Belt loop keeps the eyepiece close at hand

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. I have a Fuji X-Pro3 and T-Adaptor (for Fuji). Do I need this B&H #ALHTA43T2 in order to connect to the Mark 4 zoom?

A: That is correct, the B&H #ALHTA43T2 adapter is necessary to attach to T Mounts.

Q: 2. Can I use the Baader 76 degree Morpheus 4.5 mm eyepiece in the Celestron Regal M2 100ED spotting scope I have ordered from B&H?

A: It probably wont work properly because its too magnified. The Spotting scope is too short a focal length, I would recommend a 12 mm & higher.

Q: 3. how can I adapt the Baader U-Filter 2" to a Nikkor AF-S 50mm 1:1.8G Lens?

A: 2" is the outside diameter of the filter, not the thread. It's an M48 thread as stated on the manufacturer website, baader-planetarium. Use a normal step-up ring.

Q: 4. Is it parfocal with other Alpine Hyperion eye pieces?

A: This is the only additional information B&H has on the Alpine Astronomical Baader 72° Hyperion 36mm Aspheric Eyepiece (1.25"/2") https://alpineastro.com/products/baader-36mm-hyperion-aspheric-2-eyepiece And yes to the compatibility with other eyepieces

Q: 5. Do these filters come with a case?

A: Each filter comes in a plastic case

Q: 6. How do you fit this eyepiece to the diagonal that comes standard with Celestron Nexstar 8SE?

A: It fits the Celestron 8se directly as long as you are not using the 2" Schmidt-Cassegrain Adapter.

Q: 7. Can it be mounted on a ball head with 1/4" screw?

A: It will accept a 1/4"or 3/8"stud

Q: 8. Is this a #8 Yellow?

A: No it is not. A Yellow #8 is typically used for an increase in contrast with black and white films. The Alpine Astronomical Baader Yellow Colored Bandpass Eyepiece Filter is centered on the 495nm wavelength suppresses the secondary blue spectrum when using achromatic and half-apochromatic refractor telescopes, increasing image sharpness.

Q: 9. What is the outer housing diameter of this piece?? I need it to fit inside the 1.25" Orion Variable Universal Camera Adapter. So this eyepiece needs to have an outside diameter of less than 38.3mm.

A: The outer housing diameter of this eyepiece is listed at 101.5 mm so it would not fit.

Q: 10. How can we adapt the 2" UV bandpass filter to a Sony E-mount 49mm lens?

A: I know of no adapter to mount a 2" (50.8mm) filter on to a 49mm opening. I do know some that use gaffing tape.

[12.1 mm] Baader Orthoscopic EPs are built on the old Zeiss Abbe construction with superior smooth polishing of the lens with anti-reflective coatings that when splitting Mizar down to its smallest star there was no spikiness, just a perfectly round star. It is very sharp and bright. The little eye guard is handy because it is a very short eye relief and blocks light from the side. Great for lunar with the proper filter, same for planets and it Barlows very well for Mercury when visible.

[9mm] This eyepiece is very well made and the field of view is awesome! It makes for a very enjoyable viewing experience. Also, if you have telescopes with different tube/eyepiece sizes (1.2 & 2), it's very convenient that it works with both without any adapter.

[21.0 mm] Crisp, sharp images, from edge to edge, and good color. Nothing not to like about this eyepiece.

I have an 8 Dobsonian. My current obsession is finding deep sky objects. I bought this eyepiece mainly for it's 2/1.25 design, so I can break down those objects into a lot finer detail, once I find them with my longer 2 eyepieces, without having to change out my focuser set up. And, with its 76 degree apparent field of view, I've been able to jump to other parts of the sky, and still find other objects, without having to switch back to a longer focal length eyepiece, and jumped from Mars to Uranus last week, with no problem (granted, they are pretty close together right now).

But I also really appreciate its focal length. On nights when my 4.5 Delos is over magnification for the conditions, this eyepiece has been the perfect focal length to bring the details back into focus, when looking at the planets.

I've only been at this hobby for a year. I have a hodgepodge of different brands of eyepieces, mainly because I want them all. Each purchase I have made, so far, has to been to fill in my progression of focal lengths. I've spent between $100 - $400 on each of these purchases, and am happy with every one of them. And this one was no exception. So I have no reason to think that quality isn't the main focus of most manufacturers in this industry.

Maybe that's all just a long winded way of me suggesting, if this eyepiece, or any eyepiece you see, fits the criteria you want, there's no reason not to buy it. I'm very happy with mine.

[21.0 mm] This lens is perfect for moon seeing with a f4.5 8" Newtonian. The whole moon fits perfectly to the edge. The difference between the mead lens I was using and this is night and day. Wow is an understatement. The lens housing is quite large so keep in mind if adding a Barlow. One of the main reasons I got this one vs others is the fact you can use it's threads to add your camera and extensions to it directly which helps with weight and not having a complex imaging train. If your going to use this to take pictures with a t-ring on a dslr make sure to get a m43 to m42 adaptor and 30mm spacer to help with vignetting if your using a fast Newtonian.

[1.165 lb] The Baader 4.5mm Morpheus eyepieces is a real keeper. The eye relief is very nice, the image is sharp from edge to center, the wide field really can deliver a spacewalk experience at times. On my 4 premium refractor, the eyepiece delivers amazing sharpness and contrast at 159X (almost 40x per inch), leaving me wanting even more magnification when the seeing permits. I now have a set of five Morpheus eyepieces and there is not a clunker in the lot: I expect to use the eyepieces for many years to come. This is a five star product.

[9mm] Better than my 6mm 66 degree Gold Band eyepieces. On par with Pentax, Televue, and Orion LHDs. Eye relief is superb and no blackouts (provided you set them up for your preference, I add the included M43 ring underneath the eye cup to raise it which allows me to rest my eye on the eye cup for a perfect, no blackout, full 76 degree AFOV view.

Nice to have built in dual capability, but be warned this is NOT a small eyepiece. They are hefty.

[9mm] There is no better narrowband green filter for astronomical observations and photography. I have been observing since 1974 and this filter has turned my achromatic refractor into an apochromat. Viewing on the Moon cannot be sharper eliminating chromatic aberration by using one wavelength of color and then converting to black and white monochrome. Baader's reputation exceeds itself.

[21.0 mm] The Baader Morpheus 6.5mm eyepieces is a winner. From the abundant eye relief to the wide field, the excellent contrast and sharpness, the eyepieces doesn't let me down. While the eyepiece might be considered a bit large, it isn't overly heavy and it fits in well with the other eyepieces in the Morpheus line-up. It is a keeper.

[1.165 lb] I have owned multiple 9mm eyepieces over many years and this is one of the best. Within that past few years I found that could not see as clear as I used to, needed to ware my glasses and started to focus on better eyepieces. I started with Explorer Scientific and Televue. I purchased the ES92 series and it became clear that in addition to great optics, eye relief of at least 18mm, was a critical factor in my ability to see objects with comfort and ease.

I did multiple comparison sessions between the Morpheus, my
Televue 8 /100, my Meade 8.8 /82 and a 9 /68. No matter how much I appreciated the Ethos wide field I could not see the entire field with my glasses on, in fact its became uncomfortable and difficult for to achieve exit pupil as well as eye placement. For eye relief and
comfort the Morpheus was the clear winner. The Morpheus barlowed well and is also significantly lighter than my ES92 and lighter than my ethos.

Optically the Morpheus was excellent and sharp to the edge even in my fast f4.95 Dob. The televue was slightly sharper, darker. The ES92 provided similar views but it's hard to tell due to magnification difference and the 92 degree field of view. The Morpheus
provided excellent views of M36, 37, 38, Jupiter, Saturn and Mars as well as M43 which showed clear divisions between dark and light nebula without a filter.

Considering the eye relief, comfort, field of view, weight and the optical performance the Morpheus will be replacing my Ethos. I would absolutely recommend this eyepiece.

[9mm] This eyepiece provides an unsurpassed combination of wide field and long eye relief. So if you're looking for both in a single ocular, look no further. It's wonderfully comfortable, and just...gets out of the way.
