The Steinberg UR-RT2 is an audio interface that communicates with your computer over USB 2.0. It provides four inputs, two outputs, and conversion up to 192 kHz / 24-bit. Preamps have been designed by Yamaha, providing a transparent and detailed capture of sound. Furthermore, switchable transformers are on hand courtesy of Rupert Neve Designs, a company famous for, amongst other things, their switchable harmonic distortion, which rounds out signals and lends warmth to otherwise cold audio. These transformers are beneficial for vocals, acoustic guitars, or any instrument with significant dynamic range.

On the front panel, you'll find combination XLR-1/4" jacks that are switchable between microphone and Hi-Z configurations. Next to these inputs are the gain pots and transformer switches, between which you'll find RND's logo. A single headphone output jack, headphone level knob, and output level knob are all prominently displayed. Turn your attention to the rear of the device and you'll note the MIDI I/O, two line inputs, two main outputs, a USB port, and a +48V phantom power switch for powering condenser microphones.

An SSP2 DSP chip is on hand to help you achieve zero-latency FX monitoring across many DAWs and platforms, making this device suitable for use with laptops, tablets, and desktop computers. At 7.8 x 1.9 x 8.2", the unit is compact enough to take on the road.

The converters used in the UR-RT2 provide a maximum sampling rate of 192 kHz and 24-bit resolution.

The UR-RT2 interfaces are equipped with Yamaha's D-PRE preamps. These deliver transparent and detailed sound.

The Rupert Neve Designs transformer featured in the UR-RT interfaces adds a natural distortion to the signal to achieve a sound with more depth and perspective. Input channels 1-2 on the UR-RT2 each feature a transformer that Rupert Neve Designs has specifically developed for audio interfaces.

Thanks to the built-in SSP2 DSP and the included dspMixFx software, the UR-RT2 provides zero-latency monitoring with FX on Windows, macOS and iOS, and with every DAW.

The UR-RT2 audio interfaces provide cross-platform compatibility for Windows, macOS and iOS, with the included Cubase AI and Cubasis LE music software.

The loopback function merges incoming signals with the playback signal and offers an easy way of streaming performances live to the Internet.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. The description is ambiguous. Is this an analog to digital converter? Are the input connectors RCA or XLR?

A: Yes it is. It is also an audio interface. This is a list of the inputs and outputs:2 x combination XLR-1/4 inputs2 x 1/4 TRS line inputs, phone type1 x 5-pin DIN MIDI input1 x 5-pin DIN MIDI output2 x 1/4 TRS main outputs, phone type1 x 1/4 headphone output, phone type1 x 5-pin DIN MIDI output

Q: 2. What would be the best way to connect a Focusrite Scarlett Solo to the Neve?

A: The Scarlett Solo features unbalanced outputs. Connection from the outputs to the Neve RNHP headphone amp would be via RCA cable. From the headphone jack of the Solo would be an alternative. In this case the 3.5mm jack would be the most closely matched connection.

Q: 3. How is the volume level on the monitor out controlled?

A: The output level is worthy of most headphones and active monitors that one would want to connect.

Q: 4. Is it still possible to ignore the dedicated DI and instead use the 2 mic/line pres for 2 separate electric guitars? Can the 2 inputs be used as instrument inputs like the Motu M2?

A: Just one instrument input: "This unit may look tiny, but it packs two pristine mic pres, a Hi-Z input for instruments, two 1/4" monitor outputs, and a headphone out that can power a variety of cans with power and punch." Analog I/O: 2 x Combo XLR-1/4" TRS Balanced Mic/Line Input 1 x 1/4" TS Unbalanced Hi-Z Input 1 x 1/4" TRS Unbalanced Headphone Output 2 x 1/4" TRS Balanced Monitor Output

Q: 5. Will this mic come with the USB cable to connect to your computer?

A: Yes, A USB Type-C to Type-A cable is included.

Q: 6. Does the green signal/clip indicator LED glow from dim to bright as the signal level increases?

A: The LED will light up green when an input signal is recognized, and red if the signallevel is too high which may cause distortion or “clipping”. THe green level does not change from dim to bright.

Q: 7. Are there separate buses for the headphone outs, or are they shared with the line outs?

A: The Steinberg UR44C 6x4 USB Gen 3.1 Audio Interface's headphone outputs are independent of its line outputs.

Q: 8. Is this unit sufficient to use with the Shure SM7B?

A: Yes, you can use the EVO 4 with a Shure SM7B. There is sufficient gain for the mic with the built-in preamp. However, if you find that you require more volume from the mic for your application, you can add a Cloudlifter, FetHead or similar device between the mic and EVO 4 for additional gain.

Q: 9. Does the 24-bit 192kHz also apply to music playback or is it just for recording?

A: This specification relates to the converters that pass the analog signal from the microphone during recording only.

Q: 10. Is it Mac compatible?

A: Steinberg's website states the UR-RT2 audio interfaces provide cross-platform compatibility for Windows, macOS, and iOS with the included Cubase AI and Cubasis LE music software but doesn't specific what macOS versions are supported apart from its minimum specs. https://www.steinberg.net/en/products/audio_interfaces/ur_rt_series/resources.html

[USB 2.0] First, I am an audiophile, composer, musician, and armchair recording engineer. I fully appreciate the fine details of great audio. This amp has changed my life! For years I've been listening through my Sony 7506 headphones directly from my computer, or through a Focusrite Scarlett Solo. I figured these were of high enough quality that I didn't think twice about it. I'm 66 years old and figured my ears were not as great as they used to be. Now matter what I listened to, I could hear and cringe at the shrill high frequencies. I got used to it and simply kept the volume down. I decided to see what a really good headphone amp would do. Maybe it wouldn't change a thing. Well, I got this Neve today and cannot believe my ears! The shrill is completely gone, and I can crank it up, no problem! It is so weird because I still prepare to cringe at the usual spots, and the shrill never comes! It'll take time to lose that reflex. The warmth is amazing, like a tube amp! My ears are fine, thank you! I love this thing! I can easily tell the difference in audio quality between various recordings. I'm going through a lot of DVDs and listening to my favorite music like I've never heard before! I may even upgrade my headphones to Sennheisers. Why not! My ears and new amp deserve it!

[USB Bus Power] This amp blew my socks off. I purchased this amp to use with my Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro(250 ohm) headphones. The instant I plugged them into this amp I was blown away. The sound is so clean that I heard detail in songs that I hadn't heard before. I use this for mixing and hearing all this detail has really improved my mixes. I love this amp!

[USB Bus Power] I have other DIs with Jensen Transformers, and large red DIs with tubes. All are great and serve a purpose in the sonic arsenal of guitars and synths. I bought a pair of the Rupert Neve DIs for both stereo synths as well as sending recorded guitar to two amp heads for reamping. The tone of these is beautiful, full and very, very musical. The instrument/speaker switch is a real game changer for handling high output guitar heads. Electronic pianos sound warmer and fuller and less digital. You will not regret getting one (or two!) of these. I am very satisfied with my purchase and the service as always from B&H is second to none.

[2] Stop reading this review. Just scroll to the top and buy it. The Rupert Neve RNHP headphone amp is nothing short of unbelievable. The RNHP is a desktop-sized amplifier based on the headphone amp circuitry in the 5060 Centerpiece Desktop Mixer. Technical specs aside (you can go read those elsewhere), listening experience with the RNHP is phenomenal. The longer I've been producing music, the more important I think it is to use a proper headphone amp like the RNHP to drive your headphones or in-ears. I primarily use 64 Audio A10 custom reference in-ears and the biggest thing I notice when listening through the RNHP is an amazing clarity and smoothness to the sound spectrum. Comparisons with other devices or amps leave me with this primary take-away: there is so much power with the RNHP and such a low resistance that it's able to deliver both powerful transients and amazing detail immediately following any transients. The best way I can describe it is that I feel like there's no recovery period following a strong impulse, a recovery period where there's usually a loss of detail. The RNHP is able to deliver an incredible amount of detail, distance, and depth. My life is changed.
