    Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Will the screw knob interfere with a fold down lcd screen on the D850?

A: Typically not, but if for some reason you are experiencing this issue, just turn the camera around. You can orient the camera on its L-bracket/plate with the screw knob facing forward/under the lens rather than behind the camera.

Q: 2. Does the lever-release interfere with the panning clamp knob? Do you have to open the lever to tighten down the panning clamp knob? It is hard to tell in the picture, they look close together.

    A: There is no interference.

Q: 3. Will this ballhead work with KIrk arca-swiss compatible plates?

A: Most Arca type plates like those from Kirk are compatible with this ball head.

Q: 4. Does the lever in the lever release clamp have a safety switch so that I won't accidentally flip it open...??

A: I have read the other responses and agree with them all. Now for an engineering answer. The lever uses a design called an offset cam. The first 10-15 degrees of rotation require a lot of force. After that it becomes continually easier as the cam rotates increasing the lever arm length and the mechanical advantage. This feedback works in reverse when you close the head with the last few degrees of rotation being very hard. You know that the camera is locked without looking.

Q: 5. Will this be able to handle the EOS R5 with battery grip and the adapted EF 100-400mm lens?

A: Yes, it can handle that setup.

Q: 6. So without the model that has the Lever-Release Panning Clamp I cannot pan the camera...?? I see similar markings at the bottom of the ball head that I presumed was for panning too. Can someone please clear this up for me...??

A: The bottom portion will pan 360 degrees when the knob is loosened. The pan head on top of the ball joint allows you to level the camera independent of how the tripod is positioned, before panning. it is designed for panning the camera through a panorama sequence, and makes leveling the camera very easy.

Q: 7. If I order the RRS l-bracket, will I need to order a quick release plate as well, or does the l-bracket take the place of the QR plate?

A: You do not need to order the plate, the bracket has the plate built in.

Q: 8. I have 2009 BH-40 and T-Knob is hitting tripod platform. Is the new version shorter and doesn't hit floor when rotating the T-knob?

A: That was a modification made to the new version to help correct that issue.

Q: 9. Do you hold the camera body to pan for a single row Panorama or the panning clamp?

A: The body and the panning portion of the head are both going to rotate, so I don't think it matters which you hold while panning. Just shoot, loosen the pan screw, rotate, tighten screw, shoot, and repeat.

Q: 10. difference between compact and full-size lever release?

A: No bubble and lighter weight.

[1.315 lb] I wish I could give this ball head more than 5 stars. It is perfect and can hold way more than 18 lbs.
I really appreciate the weight savings over the BH-55, and this is perfect for anybody with a full frame DSLR and up to a 300mm lens, in my experience.

[1.315 lb] I bought this to replace a lower cost but well rated ball head that ultimately did not live up to it's reputation or reviews. I take care of my equipment but in spite of this and after only two years of reasonable use that product would not hold position without drifting out of position. Constant readjustment per the manufacturers recommendations made no difference.

As an ever learning amateur I need a secure platform to compose my images without worry. The BH 40 lives up to it's reputation. Easy to adjust, holds firmly at any angle with a 55-200, filters and hood attached, all when fully zoomed. That's worth the cost to me.

If I have an issue, it's that when mounted on my tripod (which has a base diameter of 3.15), it's not possible to reverse-fold the legs for a bag carry using no center column. With the center column in place folding the legs over the ball head for transport in the bag is easily accomplished. Since I don't often use the bag this is at best a very minor inconvenience easily solved by removing and storing the ball head in my bag.

[Yes] I have a BH-55 with the full size lever-release panning clamp and love it on my Series 3 legs. However, on my TVC-24L legs its just too heavy and a little too large. The BH-40 PCLR40 combo is PERFECT. Smooth and compact.

I have experienced none of the issues that Keiichi indicated in their review. The tolerances are tight, as it is a compact head. However, works flawlessly.

All I can say is Really Right Stuff has hit another home run for me! Very happy, very happy indeed. My new lightweight photo partner!

[Yes] It's very well built. The lever makes for very quick setup and release. The panning base lets for very easy setup for panoramas. The only annoying part is that the handle cannot be turned all the way when the base is in the upright position because it hits the base. But it is still tight enough so it's not a big deal.
