The Thunderbolt to 10Gb Ethernet adapter - Sonnet's Solo 10G Thunderbolt 3 Edition adapter - is a powerfully simple solution for adding fast 10GBase-T 10 GbE network connectivity to any Mac or Windows computer with Thunderbolt 3 ports.

The Solo 10G adapter is equipped with a single RJ45 socket, enabling it to connect to 10 GbE infrastructure via inexpensive Cat 6 or Cat 6A copper cabling at distances up to 180' or 328', respectively.

Does your facility have Cat 5e wiring installed already? You can still get a great performance gain - from 250 to 500 percent over Gigabit Ethernet speed - without rewiring. The Solo 10G adapter supports the NBase-T industry-standard of 2.5/5 Gb link speeds, which enables greater than Gigabit Ethernet speeds over Cat 5e (or better) cabling when used with an NBase-T compatible (multi-Gigabit) switch or router. This capability allows you to deploy the same adapter across an organization for users supported by different Ethernet cabling infrastructures.

The Solo 10G Thunderbolt 3 Edition adapter attains its high throughput performance and low host-CPU utilization through functions such as flow control, 64-bit address support for systems using more than 4GB of physical memory; and stateless offloads such as TCP, UDP, and IPv4 checksum offloading. These processes enable your computer to perform better while large file transfers or high I/O operations take place. This Sonnet adapter supports Energy-Efficient Ethernet (IEEE 802.3az), which reduces the adapter's power demands on your computer.

Through the use of a captive cable, the Solo 10G adapter's Thunderbolt connector remains firmly connected to it at all times. Should the cable ever break, it can easily be replaced with an approved replacement cable available from Sonnet or a Sonnet-authorized reseller.

As a networked conduit into your computer, the Sonnet Solo 10G was designed with essential security features. Incorporating encryption in hardware, the Sonnet adapter is protected against malicious modification of its firmware. Any unauthorized attempt at firmware modification to facilitate surreptitious computer access would render the adapter inoperable. This secure design prevents the Solo 10G adapter firmware from being reprogrammed except by a manufacturer's update using a secure encryption key.

Audio Video Bridging (IEEE 802.1Qav, AVB) support makes the adapter perfect for use in pro audio and video applications where synchronization of data streams is critical.

Unlike the vast majority of 10GbE adapters, the Solo 10G is pocketable - measuring a mere 3.1 inches wide by 4.5 inches deep by 1.1 inches tall - and it's bus-powered to enable truly portable use without a power adapter. Using the latest technologies and wrapping them in a rugged aluminum case, Sonnet designed a cool-running adapter that doesn't need a fan, allowing silent and energy-efficient operation.

Connect the Solo 10G adapter to your computer, connect the adapter to the network switch or directly to 10GbE-enabled storage, and configure the adapter's settings through the Mac OS Network control panel or Windows Device Manager.

Q: 10. Will this connect to a NAS (ie Q-NAP 872XT) via standard ethernet cable?

A: While the Sonnet Solo 10G Thunderbolt 3 to 10 Gigabit Ethernet Fanless Adapter with NBASE-T Support can physically connect to a NAS via Ethernet, it wouldn't allow for direct communication between a computer and the NAS, as the NAS will need to be routed through a network switch first.

[Bus Powered] Outstanding -- had an OWC box that claimed to do the same; fought its spotty performance for a year before buying this. Works like a charm.

[Yes] I've got a Mac Pro (Late 2013) and using an external Thunderbolt 2 to PCI add on. I wanted to connect my Mac to 10GBe, but needed a supported card (from Mac OS X - Montery). This card works out of the box in that situation (the other version with just a SFP+ socket should work as well, I just went with this on since is was $50 cheaper at the time). You need the low profile bracket but it should come with one (mine was missing, but the manufacturer sent a replacement). It's working great!!

[0.655 lb] Recently moved in to a new house and had the home automation company run Cat6A from my office to the wiring closet. I purchased a Ubiquiti 48 Port Switch with 2 SFP+ and 2 SFP ports. Added the 10G Copper SFP+ module and some good Hubbell Cat6A Patch cables on each end. Installed the Sonnet Solo in my existing Windows 10 Pro desktop... downloaded the driver and firmware from Sonnet's web site. Firmware and driver installed flawlessly. Windows 10 easily sees new card. Satisfying to see the white light (10G) connectivity on my Ubiquiti Switch. Highly recommend. Am purchasing another one to install in my home server so I'll have 10GB from desktop to server.

[Aluminum] No problems so far, hope it keeps working.
Gets hot but the unit is heavy aluminum so it acts as a heat sink.
Will update if anything happens.

[0.655 lb] Popped one into an Threadripper box, another into a 5950x, reboot and 10 GBASE-T recognized for both. 2.37 GB on a 2.5 GB network, 5 GB on a 10GB network but I suspect copper wiring slowing things down on the latter. Will buy again!
