Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. With this lens (MFR #11715) could you mount a 43mm filter from say Leica and also mount the lens hood that comes with this lens?

A: Yes, the Round Metal Lens Hood is included in the box of Leica Summilux-M 50mm f/1.4 ASPH. Lens (Black-Chrome Edition, Made in Portugal) mounts on the lens bayonet while the 43mm filter screw is on the front inner threads of the lens.

Q: 2. Will this fit on the panasonic 50mm f/1.4?

A: No, the Leica Lens Hood is for Summilux-SL 50mm f/1.4 Lens.

Q: 3. Is a newer version expected?

A: Leica is not replacing the Leica Summilux-SL 50mm f/1.4 ASPH. Lens anytime soon.

Q: 4. When does this lens was launched?

A: According to Ken Rockwell it was 2004. I have had one since 2011, I believe it might be the best portrait lens ever made by anyone due to its incredibly realistic drawing and equally incredible bokeh.

Q: 5. So aside from the f-stop and the weight, what is the difference in IQ or whatever between this 50/1.4 and the other Leica 50/2?

A: The one-stop difference in aperture is the biggest difference; optically they are very similar, but not identical, with a similar number of aspherical surfaces and anomalous partial dispersion elements, and similar multi-coating. The 50mm f/2 lens also has a dual synchro drive stepping AF motor.

Q: 6. Does the Leica Sumilux 50mm/f1.4 come with a lens shade?

A: The Sumilux 50 does come with a hood yes.

Q: 7. Is the pre asph version better for film Leica's?

A: Both digital and film cameras benefit from using pre-aspherical versions of lenses, as they offer a distinct character to the photographer’s images. That being said, pre-aspherical lenses will produce more distortions in the image compared to aspherical lens designs, which may be more visible with modern digital sensors.

Q: 8. Why is it so expensive? What is the diference between a Zeiss 50mm 1.4 or a Canon fD 50mm 1.4 or Sigma 50mm 1.4? Why should I buy this lens? Thank you, Im asking with honesty.

A: This is a Leica and they are higher quality, premium lenses.

Q: 9. Is the Leica Sumilux-M 50MM 1.4 a 6 bit lens?

A: Yes the Leica Summilux-M 50mm f/1.4 ASPH. Lens (Black) has, Leica M quick-change bayonet with 6 bit lens identification bar code for digital M models.

Q: 10. Does this new version have a metal or plastic focusing tab?

A: The focusing ring of the Leica Summilux-M 50mm f/1.4 ASPH. Lens is metal, like the rest of the lens, but the focusing tab is plastic.

[Bayonet] I purchased the Black-Chrome edition of the Summilux 50mm with the matte black finish. It's nicely weighted/well balanced on my M10r. It's a beautiful lens.

According to the literature, this is a limited 500 piece run. Although a hefty price for a lens, I'm sure it will appreciate in value over the years and after several photoshoots, I found it one of the best Leica M lenses I have ever used.

The resulting pics look great. I see no chromatic aberrations or distortions. I've used it for portraits and the images are sharp with that distinct 'Leica look'.

The lens comes with a matching metal lens hood that complements the black matte finish and classic look of the lens. The lens hood stores away on the lens in the backward position. You need to press the two lens hood tabs to release it, turn it around, align it properly, and press the tabs again to mount it on the lens. It was a little awkward at first, but I got used to aligning the lens hood to where it mates with the lens.

The lens was on backorder but became available within a couple of days. As usual, great job of packaging and timely shipping by B&H.

I love this lens!

[0.26 lb] Very sharp! I use on my M6 and my M11! I've discovered I'm a 50mm man. Usually the only lens I carry. Light, sharp and easy. I highly recommend!

[0.26 lb] Awesome lens. I am getting adaptors for my Sony bodies just to be able to use this lens outside of the Leica world. Too juicy!!

[Bayonet] I just love this lens and leave it on 90% of the time- I do practice with it and that's vital- but the results are well worth it! Get this lens!!!

[Bayonet] Added this to the lenses for my Leica M9-P, great quality as always, so worth the rather higher cost of the brand... and they keep getting more expensive, so....

[Bayonet] Leica M shooter for decades (now M10P), I decided to try the SL system with the Panasonic S1R coupled with this Summilux-SL 50mm. The combo impress with unconventional size and weight. Once working on the 47 Mpx raw files in Lightroom, your efforts are rewarded: I never had this type of resolution with any f/1.4 lens! No softness at all. The smoothness of the out of focus areas is remarkable, bokeh is really unique and makes this lens part of best practices for any portrait photography. AF could be faster, but at this point, I am glad that it is precise enough to get the image perfectly sharp where I want, mostly when I want it. Truly a master piece, this lens should be on your to-shoot-with list. I did some side by side comparisons with the Leica M Apo-Summicron 50mm f/2 and it seems to me that the SL is over performing it in overall clarity/definition at same aperture. A-MA-ZING. The real issue, after this one (almost) everything looks kind of faded, so you have no choice but to carry the load!

[Bayonet] The feeling of operation and texture is the best among the current 50mm lenses.  The used lens of summilux 1st is different from the used summcron and price is more than  $ 20,000 lens are badly damaged and it is too late to buy from now.  This lens is brand new, high performance and compact and very nice.  I recommend this UN filter https://www.un-satellite.jp/html/products/detail.php?product_id=308.  The genuine hood can be used with SCHOTTs glass protection filter 43 mm.

[Bayonet] I’ve been debating getting this lens for a very long time, and I’m very glad I did. I think what held me back was a handful of the negative reviews about how the hood didn’t fit with a filter on. While this is true, I’ve found there isn’t really a need for every day street photography. The only reason I used hoods in the past was to protect the lens and an occasional heavy sunshine day, but my filter has got the lens protected so I don’t have a need for a hood. As far as the lens itself goes, it’s seriously a work of art and is pretty hefty for its size, a big chunk of well sculpted brass. Anyway, if you’ve been holding off due to the hood issue you might want to reconsider. Once this is sold out it’s only going to become more collectible.

[Bayonet] Even wide open in bright daylight the level of clarity and the amount of contrast is amazing. Clearly the Portugal manufacturing process is equal to the German one.
