Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. How does this Mercury Elite Pro Dock compare to a new "20TB G-Raid with Thunderbolt 3". I'm planning to put 10TB Gold drives in the OWC. OWC claims to have a higher MB/s than WD. Any experience? What about fan sound? I just tested a G-Raid and was pretty quiet.

A: The numbers are accurate in my testing. The fan is not silent though, it has to move too much air to properly cool the drives.

Q: 2. Is this OWC mercury electra pro? The one compatible with Atomos Ninja 5?

A: Yes, the OWC Mercury Electra 6G 2.5" SATA 7mm SSD (2TB) is compatible with the Ninja V.

Q: 3. Will this work connected to a thunderbolt 2 port with a tb3-tb2 adapter?

A: The OWC Gemini Thunderbolt 3 Dock and Dual-Drive RAID Enclosure will work with a certified Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter like the original Apple adapter.

Q: 4. OK, another question. Why did my first drive had a formatted capacity of 119.24GB, the second drive ,even though the same drive, only 111.7GB?Could someone please explain that??For me it looks like the first one was actually 128GB, the second only 120GB (both formatted with NTFS, both a single partition)...

A: I think I found the answer. The SSD (119.24GB) seems to be a refurbished as it has a Sticker across the Serial# with a new serial. It also is marked as SATA II while the other is marked as SATA III.@Andy L. : thanks for your response. I have formatted the bigger one externally as one disc and it will be the boot disc as soon as I have split the drive in half to be able to create a Dual Boot system. My data disc resides now where the DVD used to be...

Q: 5. Is this the OWC mercury electra pro The one compatible with Atomos Ninja 5?

A: This is the 2.0TB OWC Mercury Electra 6G not the Pro. But it is compatible with the Atomos Ninja 5.

Q: 6. What is the TBW rating for the 120GB and 250GB?

A: The manufacturer has not specified an TBW for neither the OWC 120GB Mercury Electra 6G 2.5" Internal SSD nor the 250GB model, however both have an MTBF of 1,500,000 hours.

Q: 7. Does this enclosure put the drive to sleep after a few minutes of activity? I'm NOT referring to the MacOS system settings.

A: The OWC Mercury Elite Pro mini 2.5" SATA to USB Type-C Portable Storage Enclosure does not have any internal processing capability. It is a purely "passive" enclosure which does not have any ability to regulate itself without input from the operating system.

Q: 8. Will this work with Enterprise drives, specifically Seagate 6TB Iron Wolf?

A: Yes, those drives will work fine.

Q: 9. Will a SanDisk 2TB (or 4TB) 3D SATA III 2.5" Internal SSD work in this?

A: Yes, a 2TB or 4TB SanDisk 3D SATA III 2.5" Internal SSD will work in the OWC Mercury Elite Pro mini 2.5" SATA to USB Type-C Portable Storage Enclosure.

Q: 10. Will this drive work, in conjunction with the Caddy II as a recording drive with an Atomos Ninja?

A: Yes, the 2TB Mercury Electra 6G SSD is compatible with the Master Caddy II when recording on the Atomos Ninja V. The SSD has been tested from Atomos and approved for supporting all formats the Ninja V supports.

[1500 G / 0.5 ms] I've used OWC SSDs before, and I bought another one to replace a Sandisk SSD that died after 4 years. Unlike other brands, 120GB is actually 120GB of usable space.

[1 TB] So far so good, using as a scratch disk and works great.

[1 TB] This is the 2nd OWC SSD I've installed to rejuvenate an ancient and doddering Mac, this one on a 2010 Macbook Pro. (The first was on a 2006 Macbook.) In both cases, installation was straightforward, and both times, the speed bump in operation was remarkable. For example, boot times went from close to a minute to under 30 seconds, and programs felt peppier and more responsive with the OWC SSD in place. I've been using OWC products for years, and they're always top notchthis SSD is no exceptionand if your computer has some years on it, here's a veritable fountain of youth.

[1500 G / 0.5 ms] The boot up procedure on my new MacBook Pro 13 that took many minutes has been reduced to less than 30 seconds. The computer runs cooler and more quietly. The battery lasts longer. The load times for applications is dramatically decreased, and those apps which swap data into and out of virtual memory run faster. Installation was a snap with easy-to-follow instructions from iFixit. I can think of no negative other than the fact that it is somewhat costly.

[1500 G / 0.5 ms] I installed this SSD in a mid-2012 Macbook Pro 13" version 9,2 model. Wow! I became a big fan of SSD drives with my new iMac and the MacBook was looking so pokey in comparison. Now my MacBook has new life, amazingly faster performance. It's the best speed upgrade I have ever experienced with a product. I'm running High Sierra on this book with no glitches. Has 16 gb ram. I highly recommend this especially because new Macbooks are so pricey and Apple has taken away ports I use in the new models, such as Ethernet, DVD drive, Firewire. It's a new machine again. Just be aware you will want to partition the drive with the new Apple APFS as it will not work with GUID. I then migrated my software with Apple migration assistant with only minor glitches to some software icons. Those I fixed by booting in safe mode, then back to normal mode.
