The white, 36" Photek GoodLighter Umbrella with Removable Shaft, White, 36"from Photek GoodLighter Umbrella with Removable Shaft, White, 36"is a redesigned classic umbrella with a fiberglass frame and white reflective fabric that is free from contaminates that might add an unwanted color cast to your light output. The 10-panel construction (instead of the usual 8) gives the fabric tighter support that results in more controllable output and refined circular catchlights in the eyes of your subjects. The umbrella's black backing is removable allowing you to shoot through the translucent white fabric for snappier contrast. This GoodLighter umbrella ships with a removable 8mm shaft but an optional 7mm shaft is available for lights that require it.

A: You could use the Photek SoftLighter Umbrella with Removable 8mm Shaft (60") with a 600EX II RT but I would prefer to use Photek Softlighter Hot Shoe Diffuser Kit with Umbrella (60") B&H # PHHSD6000K MFR # HSD-60K because it has a better opening to use with a speedlight.

Q: 2. Why not use the sock version, will it not work with speed light? Also, hot shoe ? Shouldn't it be cold shoe ?

A: The standard Photek SoftLighter Umbrella with Removable 8mm Shaft (46 ), B&H # PHSL5000FG (with the sock as you describe it), is designed for use with monolight fixtures, not hot shoe speedlights. The sock as you state is centered around the umbrella shaft, and as most all monolights and/or studio strobes typically have built-in umbrella shafts and are designed to rest close to the center umbrella shaft, the sock is designed to wrap around the monolight or studio strobe and can then be sealed with Velcro to prevent light from escaping.Hot shoe flashes are not designed to fit onto light stands; as their name indicates, they are designed to connect to the hot shoe on the top of your camera. As such, to use a hot shoe flash on a light stand, a stand adapter or an umbrella adapter is required. By design, the umbrella shaft receptacle is below the head of the hot shoe flash, which is much taller and has the head of the hot shoe speedlight anywhere from 6-9 inches above the center umbrella shaft. There is no way the standard Softlighter diffuser cover would work with a hot shoe speedlight flash. The Softlight Hot Shoe Diffuser kit has a long vertical slit with Velcro that allows the taller hot shoe flash and umbrella adapter to all sit inside the umbrella and to then be sealed for usage.The item is called the Photek Softlighter Hot Shoe Diffuser Kit as it is designed for hot shoe flashes. The name of the kit is not in reference to the shoe mount adapter on which the flash connects (which would be a cold shoe); it is in reference to the flash type for which it is designed.

A: All Profoto strobe units are designed for use with 8mm umbrella shafts. As such, both umbrella shafts included with the purchase of the Photek SoftLighter Umbrella with Removable 7mm and 8mm Shaft (36") would be compatible for use with Protofoto strobes.

Q: 8. What about the catch-light with this contraption ?

A: The Softlighter Umbrella would produce a rounded catch-light.

[1.5 lb] As an editorial photographer based in the UK. I had waited expectantly for the arrival of the Softlighter, which is not available here in the UK. After a few test shots, I used it on a commission for a National newspaper for the first time last weekend. Really, really pleased with the results, beautifully soft, even, shadowless light. Very easy and quick to set-up. I would recommend this to every newspaper photographer who has limited time to set up and execute assignments. 5

[8 mm] Purchased for the compact size - it fits in my large checked suitcase. Very clever design. Weaving the included cone shaped silver reflector inside the umbrella spokes distributes the light from a Profoto B10 uniformly within the diffusion surface. The result is a soft yet somewhat specular light when maintained at close range (about 36 to 48 inchs to the subject). Perfect for head shots for one or two people. It's light duty so care must be taken with handling but it works great when used as intended. Quick and easy to set-up and extremely light weight - important for air travel. The sock that enclosed the light fits tight on the Profoto B10 so it might not fit larger lights. 5

[1.5 lb] I have several large softboxes that I really like, but sometimes I need something more compact when shooting headshots on locations. This works perfectly for this. This takes up a lot less space because it is mostly vertical on the stand. It's also a lot lighter than a large softbox and I'll be able to position it in ways that would be difficult at best with softboxes. Still creates nice soft light. Really happy I picked this up after hearing about it for so long. 5

[8 mm] Beware when purchasing that the 7mm shaft is closer to 6mm, and will fall out of Profoto heads. The 8mm Photek shaft fits perfectly into the Profoto D4 heads.... The quality is excellent. I would buy Photek again and again. 5

[Black] I originally purchased the 7mm fixed shaft umbrella because they were recommended for Profoto heads. The 7mm diameter was actually closer to 6mm, and they wouldn't stay in. ...exchanged them for these 8mm shaft ones and they fit perfectly! I can insert them all the way to the ribs, making possible the removal of the extra shaft piece (can get closer to subject that way). I shot a group of 70 people outdoors at night with a pair of these and was very happy with their performance. Great price for a quality product. 5
