Mixing a relatively compact, lightweight form factor with updated stabilization and performance, the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS II USM Lens Reviewfrom Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS II USM Lens Reviewis an impressively versatile telephoto zoom. Well-suited for a range of subjects, from events to portraiture to sports, this zoom is characterized by its constant f/4 maximum aperture to strike a balance between consistent performance and portability. Its optical design includes a pair of UD elements and one fluorite element to greatly reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing. This optimized design, along with a Super Spectra coating, also helps to control flare and ghosting for greater contrast and color accuracy when working in harsh lighting and backlit conditions.

Version II of this popular lens also sees the inclusion of a revised Optical Image Stabilizer, which now compensates for five stops of camera shake and offers three distinct stabilization modes to suit different shooting applications. A ring-type USM and internal focusing mechanism also afford quick, quiet, and accurate autofocus performance, as well as full-time manual focus override. Additionally, this lens is weather-sealed for use in trying environmental conditions.

Versatile telephoto zoom is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount DSLRs however, it can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 112-320mm equivalent focal length range.

Constant f/4 maximum aperture affords consistent performance throughout the zoom range and also contributes to the relatively lightweight design and compact form factor.

One fluorite element and two ultra-low dispersion glass elements noticeably reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for high clarity and color fidelity.

Super Spectra coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize ghosting and flare for greater contrast and color neutrality when working in strong lighting conditions.

An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to five shutter speed stops to better enable working in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds. Additionally, three dedicated image stabilization modes are available (Standard, During Exposure Only, and Panning) and can be selectively employed to suit a variety of types of shooting.

A ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM), along with an internal focusing system, is employed to deliver fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override.

Focus Limiter switch lets you constrain the focusing to two different ranges to suit different applications: 3.3'-infinity or 9.8'-infinity.

Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.

As a member of the esteemed L-series, this lens is sealed against dust and moisture for working in inclement environmental conditions.

Optional AII(WII) Tripod Mount Ring is available and benefits working with the lens atop a tripod or monopod.

Compatible with optional EF 1.4X and EF 2X teleconverters.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. The 2.8 flavor definitely needs its tripod collar. But does this really need a collar? I'm using a 5D IV.

A: Teleconverters do not affect the MFD (Minimum Focus Distance) of a lens so you can still use the lens's focus scale.

[Yes] Wanted a great zoom for travel and found it in the Canon 70-200mm f/4L IS II lens. This lens complements my 16-35mm f/2.8L III and 50mm f/1.4 lenses. At half the price and half the weight of the 70-200 f/2.8 I have no hesitation in bringing this lens with me wherever I go. Very sharp, very easy to hold and use. Good for some portraits as well as getting closer to subject during travel. Not nearly as obtrusive as some, including me, have feared. Very happy with this lens.

[f/4] Focus accuracy and performance with this lens is FAST and ACCURATE. I use this in low-light events regularly, and it blows me away how much quicker it locks on than all of my other F2.8 lenses. This lens line is a sportster's dream (F2.8 obviously is better though.) It's quite lightweight since it is F4 and not F2.8 as well, so it's a good mix of portability alongside having incredible image quality and focus performance. Owned for 9 years and going strong! Never needed a servicing either.

[72 mm (Front)] We used this lens for the first time yesterday in a beach photo shoot. The images are stunning...crisp and vivid. The image stabilization works very well. We chose this over the more expensive 70-200 lenses because we shoot almost exclusively outdoors in sunlight and this lens appears to be perfect for this. The build quality is fantastic so it should provide great results for our clients for years to come!

[Autofocus] This is my 5th L lens and may very well become my favorite due to its versatility, weight, great IS and image quality. I wrestled with whether to get the f/2.8 lll, but, after reading the reviews, it seemed that the only advantage was the 1-stop aperture availability, which is a valid consideration. But, the advantage of the f/4 is it is half the weight and has much better IS (5 stops vs 3). The weight was a major factor, along with not feeling the $800 price difference was warranted for my personal use.
After having shot with it for a month, I am truly delighted with my choice. The image quality of the 70-200 is exquisite. I've kept it on my 5D4 and used it in a variety of venues, but have particularly enjoyed it on hikes in the forests here in the Blue Ridge Mountains. It is light enough not to cause neck soreness and has an ideal range of focal lengths for my shooting. And the expanded IS allows for sharper hand-held shooting in the shaded environment. I carry a 16-35 f/2.8 with me also, but am finding that 90% of my shots are with the 70-200. The combination of those 2 lenses has largely replaced my 24-105 f/4, while giving me a greater range of reach and creativity. It will also be a great travel lens.
Also, because of its light weight, I find no need for a tripod mount.

[2.51 lb] I bought this lens for a light weight walk around lens.
Extremely sharp and the 5 stops IS is wonderful.
Great with a 24-70mm

[0.27x] I have had 70-200L lenses for the past 8 years starting with a f4L non-IS. Around 2 years ago I upgraded to the f4L IS version. I was highly impressed with the colors and sharpness on my original 70-200 but my IS copy makes those look dull and soft. The IS, despite being one of Canon's older IS technologies, does make a difference.

As for the sharpness, it really can't be beat. My 70-200 is perfect proof as to why this range lens is regarded as one of Canon's best L zoom lenses on the market. I have found it to be sharpest between f/7.1-9, but have had no issues with the sharpness even when being used wide open at that f/4.

I personally recommend this lens to anyone and everyone. If you don't have a 70-200 L in your gear bag, you really are missing out.

[72 mm (Front)] Superior lens , period.
In my opinion, the weight benefit far outways the loss of a stop.

[72 mm (Front)] I recently purchased this lens with the intent on shooting my nephews wedding next September. I wanted to shoot with it before the wedding to make sure I didnt need to return it and upgrade to the 2.8 version. I do not need to upgrade. this lens focuses fast, the image stabilization is fast and the images surpass my expectations, even in low light. I like the fact the zoom is internal and the manual focus over-ride is a plus. I have already used this lens for birthday parties, nature, landscape, and my next endeavor with this lens will be portraits. I am quite pleased with this lens and if you are having second trouble deciding, well, let me assure you, you will not be disappointed.

[9, Rounded] Excellent lens I have had this for about 8 months sharp pictures even captures birds in flight! Very light for the zoom range, well thought out lens. Easy to focus or adjust the zoom while framing a moving subject. I use it with a 1.4xII and its still tack sharp even on off hand shots.
