Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is the drive 2x4tb or 2x2tb?

A: It is pre-configured as RAID 0, therefore it has 2x 2TB drives. RAID 0 is not redundant, therefore you do not lose any drive capacity. If this were pre-configured as a RAID 1 and still said 4TB G-RAID , it would be 2x4TB since the 2 drives would mirror each other, giving you a total of 4TB usable space.

Q: 2. Where's the fan sound? Ive been using this unit for 3 days and feels a little hot, but the fan doesnt start. Also I connected my 2nd display to the TB port of this unit and doesn't work... Am I missing something?

A: Just turned on my 8TB G-RAID TB. There is a startup sound, then it has only a very faint sound, which I assume is the fan but I'm not really sure. I searched the G-Tech support pages but couldn't find anything specific to the G-RAID fan. There was something about another model, G-Safe, having a fan that only comes on when the drive overheats. But I don't know if that applies to the G-RAID too. I have a vague memory that my drive case sometimes feels a little warm and maybe reading somewhere that that's OK. But if yours feels really hot, you might want to just return it and ask to exchange it for another one. Also, do you have at least 4 inches of free space around all sides of the drive? I think that's supposed to be especially important in the rear, in terms of good ventilation.

Q: 3. What's in the box says it comes with a thunderbolt cable, but two reviewers said it does not include the cable. Is there a thunderbolt cable included?

A: Yes mine did the 8 TB version

Q: 4. How can I use this drive on a computer that only has USB and Firewire connections?

A: You cannot. It will only work on a computer that supports Thunderbolt, or Thunderbolt 2.

Q: 5. can you reformat from raid 0 to raid 1?

A: This G-RAID can not be configured to RAID 1.

Q: 6. warrentee?

A: This comes with a manufacturers limited 3-Year Warranty.

Q: 7. What are the differences between this unit and a href= http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1123837-REG/g_technology_0g04085_g_raid_thunderbolt_2_usb_3_0.html target= _blank http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1123837-REG/g_technology_0g04085_g_raid_thunderbolt_2_usb_3_0.html/a ? Enterprise drives? Is that why the speeds are faster on the more expensive model?

A: Hi, the first one you mention has Thunderbolt 1 ports, and is configured as a software RAID.The link to the removable unit, this is a newer product with Thunderbolt 2 ports, utilizes a hardware RAID, and the drives are actually removeable.

Q: 8. What is the limitation in the hardware that prohibits RAID 1 configurations in Disk Utility on the Mac?

A: The RAID hardware only allows for RAID 0 configuration. You do have the option to Erase the contents of the G-RAID partition in disk utility and reformat the drive to be used as a regular drive without any RAID.

Q: 9. What cartridges does this use?

A: This model uses the following cartridge media: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?sts=ma&fct=fct_category%7carchiving_media_22445&N=0&Ntt=rdx%20tape

Q: 10. Several reviews state this G-Tech 4TB G-Raid doesn't come with a Thunderbolt cable. However, the In The Box tab in this listing states a cable is included. I will be using this with an iMac 27 . Can you please verify this for me? Thank you.

A: Yes, the G-RAID comes with the long thunderbolt cable and many others cables as well.

[1] i've used g-tech drives for 5 years now and they have never failed me. i like the mirroring option and the heavy-duty shell. what's more important than the safety of your movie files?

[Desktop] I've been using this for editing HD video and it's been working great! My only complaint it the obnoxiously bright light on the front of the drive, which gets even brighter when the drive is working. Sometimes I set things in front of it to block it out.

[8 to 90%] I bought the 4TB G-RAID as a backup since my 2TB drive was full. I am a professional writer/producer/editor, so my footage and other data are extremely important. Before I bought this product, I spent a lot of time looking at other drives before I settled on the G-RAID. I liked the fact that it is designed for what I do - video. It was also very attractively priced and is a good compact size, so it doesn't take up much room at my work station. I've had it for a few weeks now and so far, it is quiet and dependable. It was easy to set up - just plugged it in. While I cannot predict the future, the fact is that there is no such thing as a perfect hard drive regardless of the brand or model. But I can say that I am completely satisfied with this product.

[260 MB/s] i have about 5 g-technology drives, love them, reliable, quiet, excellent! have had to replace the power adapter on the earlier model g-raids, but the drives are solid!

[550,000 Hours] I bought and use the G-Raid as a Raid 1 back up. You lose some storage space but you wont lose your data. The firewire speed is awesome just wake speed is the only thing that can let it down, but not noticeably. Its quieter than the G-raid mini i have for portable back up which i don't understand. It is big and heavy so don't buy this if your thinking of taking it on travels with you, it will eat your baggage allowance! Just wish i cold make use of the e-sata connection and really let it fly.

[1] I am a professional video editor and was in the market for a reliable fast drive. In the past I used standard 7200 rpm drives thinking they were fine for my needs - and they seemed to work fine, but then I tried the G-Raid. I immediately noticed a big leap in speed - in everything from render times to no more drop frames during playback. I feel the G-Raid gave a big performance boost to my editing workflow. It is a bit more expensive than other standard drives, but it's worth it. I now use the G-Raid as my main media drive - and use the less expensive drives to do simple data back up, and that seems to suit my needs fine. I highly recommend this drive unit for any serious video or audio professional who is in need of a fast reliable external drive.
