The 3 x 4" Tiffen 85B/ND Filter 3x4" - 1 Stopblends both an amber color conversion 85B and a 0.3 neutral density filter. The ND filtration provides a 1-stop exposure reduction for darkening the entire image in order to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than normally required. The 85B filtration covers the entire filter plane and converts the color temperature to 3200K for use with type B (tungsten) films.

This filter is made using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between two pieces of optical glass, and grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch. This filter measures 3 x 4" / 76.2 x 101.6mm.

Q: 1. Is there a trick for screwing the filter onto the lens and getting the white dot on the top in the middle, so easy to see Min/Max?

A: That is not possible, the dot falls where it may when screwed to a lens.

Q: 2. Does anyone else get a grinding noise/feeling like a tiny piece of sand or metal in in between the gliding rings? Should I take it back and exchange it? Haven't had it for more than a day. Also seems like the oil in between the rings comes out rather easily. Functions fine, but if it's defective I want a normal one.

A: The VND filters should not grind and oil should not leak, this is the first time I have heard of these problems with a VND. Our apologies, but it sounds like your filter is defective. Q: 3. Why in the world would you use this awful simulated image?

A: If you don't understand what the picture is showing, then you are not qualified to use this product. ND filters are used to reduce the amount of light entering the camera so that you can drag or slow down the shutter creating a soft water affect. This filter is also used in other special effect situations for video. I have worked on film productions for some of the largest production companies in the world and this is my go to filter.

Q: 4. Does this degrade image quality at infinite (fine detail)?

A: This filter will not degrade image quality, it only eliminates three stops of light.

Q: 5. Would this fit the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art Lens for Canon EF?

A: It will work with a step up ring but you can get one that is 72mm to fit directly.

Q: 6. For the 77mm version, is the reported green cast, X uneven fading AND/OR image degradation (softness, etc) starting to appear more easily in 24mm focal length or wider (on Full Frame cameras)?And are those issues appearing WITHIN the Start and End marks? At what point aprox.?Thank you!!

A: What green cast are you referring to? There are no known issues with green cast with the Tiffen VND filter, perhaps you are referring to the IRVND?The X Bar effect is a function of optical physics when combining two circular polarizing filters to make a VND. This effect happens with all manufacturers VND filters and does not indicate a problem with the filter. The X Bar effect typically appears when shooting at wide angle and at higher density settings on the VND filter, you will see this effect appear sooner with a full frame camera than with a cropped sensor camera. To correct this look through your viewfinder and reduce the density on the VND filter, change your focal length by zooming in or a combination of both until the effect goes away. The X Bar effect can happen within the Min and Max settings, especially at darker densities on full frame cameras. You should never adjust the VND outside the Min and Max settings.

Q: 7. The spec says Front Filter Thread Size86mm , so can I use a normal 86mm lens cap on the outside of the filter? Thanks!

A: You should be able to use you 77mm lens cap. I do with mine.

Q: 8. What's the pitch of the threads?

A: Not sure about "thread pitch" however, I can say that is threads on & off my Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM Lens just fine.

Q: 9. will this fit on a Canon XA25 & does it eliminate the subject washout I get from bright/white stage lights?

A: This filter will fit any lens which has a 58mm filter thread. The Tiffen Variable Neutral Density Filter provides two to 8 stops of light control. This means that it limits the amount of light entering your lens. By limiting the amount of light entering your lens you achieve greater control over your camera. You can do long exposures with the VND (blur moving water, clouds, etc) or use it to control your depth of field in bright sun.

Q: 10. I want to thread a step down ring on the outside of the 82mm in order to mount a padcaster teleprompter, what is the outside size? 87mm?

A: According to Tiffen, the exterior diameter of the outer ring on the Tiffen 82mm Variable Neutral Density Filter is 3.851 inches, or 97.82 mm.
