Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. How do I use the included DC connector? Do you plug a cable into it?

A: Solder it on to a wire supplying 12vdc. or purchase the Sound Devices supply for it.

Q: 2. Most of these AD2022's are silver...any difference with this black one?

A: There is no difference between the black and silver versions of the Avalon Design AD2022 Microphone Preamp.

Q: 3. Is this product compatible with f8 zoom?Do you have it in stock?

A: No it is not. Portabrace offes a dedicated case for the Zoom F8 recorder. Porta Brace ATV-Z8 Audio Tactical Vest for Zoom F8 Portable Recorder B&H # POATVZ8 It is currently in stock.

Q: 4. If I buy this MM1 device, can I use it with the MIX PRE-3 II or do I no longer need it? Please help

A: Sound Devices MM-1 Single-Channel Portable Microphone Preamp provides a standalone preamp option with line level output for use in a variety of situations. If the Sound Devices MixPre-3 had a dedicated line level input, this unit might prove useful to use alongside.

Q: 5. Does this product (Porta Brace ATV-633 Audio Tactical Vest for Sound Devices 633) come along with the bag for the 633? I know the title says Tactical Vest but the pictures show the bag and nowhere in the description does it say that the bag is not included or that the bag is sold separately.

A: The bag at the front is included as part of the vest/harness and fits the Sound Devices 633 and Zaxcom MAXX.

Q: 6. Does the bag detach from the vest?

A: Yes - the system is modular and the components detach from the vest.

Q: 7. Will this device convert a mic level signal to line level?

A: Yes, the MP-1 inputs a mic level signal and outputs a line level signal.

Q: 8. What size fits this porta brace?, for example my size for a serious shirt m, because I see that the person in the picture that shows the product is one size larger.

A: I'm an asian M. My shoulder width is about 1'15, and this is a little bit big for me. However, with the velcro straps (there's a lot of flexibility), I'm still able to get a good fit.

Q: 9. how does this work if I'm going directly in my camera (red scarlet mx..or my 5d mark 3)??

A: Well you'd need an adapter cable to connect it. While this would work it's really designed to supply a high quality signal to a standalone audio recorder for sync sound. It's hazardous to rely entirely on the camera for audio. A bad card or glitch in picture will affect audio as well. If the camera audio is scratch only then it's a useful reference and a backup in dire cases. If you have no option but to feed audio directly to the camera consider other options that are both more ergonomic and include a recorder: the Tascam d70 for example.

Q: 10. This preamp have warranty?

A: This mic preamp comes with a five year, transferable warranty from Grace Design.

[0.05%] The naysayers are wrong or got faulty units. I have the sure version which predates sound devices as a brand, but it looks exactly the same and supposedly has the same (or very very close) signal path. Saying a tascam TD-100 sounds better is crazy talk. I have a tascam TD-100 and unless I got a bunk unit, it's way more noisy, has way less headroom and gain and sounds muddy and one dimensional in comparison. Don't get me wrong, the TD-100 is greT for the price but it's in a different glass. Need more gain before noise? Look no further. Want pro preamps that operate on aa batteries? Check. 48v phantom? Check. Solid, weather tight build quality? Check. It's not a neve, ua, focusrite red, API, etc, but it's awesome sounding to my ears and you can bring it to a mountain top or Antarctica if you want.

[-126 dBu (EIN)] If you have the luxury of separate crew positions for boom operator(s) and sound mixer, get this! The boom op just clips this to his or her belt, plugs in their headphones and the microphone, and then it's mostly just set and forget. The signal quality is so quiet and perfect! (I already have a Sound Devices MixPre-D, which evidently has the same signal chain, so I wasn't surprised.)

A word of warning: if the mixer or recorder you plug this into doesn't have line-level inputs, then you won't get much out of this device. The Zoom F4 specifically only has line level if you plug into it with a 1/4 TRS. If you connect this to a mic-level input, you'll have to turn the gain down on one or both device so low as to be difficult to use. If the gain is low on the MM-1, then the headphone output will also be relatively low. So if your recorder doesn't take line-level for input, then don't bother.

[0.05%] I just bought this little preamp and wow, nothing bad to say when I paired to my zoom h6. Really good sound quality using AT2035. Bought a monoprice 1/4 inch TRS to female XLR and plug it to the H6 and even though the h6 has good preamps, I could hear some noise when bump up more than 7 db gain. Now sound is amazing!!! Thanks SD for the great product and B&H for the fast shipping.

[2.33 lb] This is one of the best audio purchases I've ever made. It's one of the cleanest devices I've ever heard (or not heard. . . .) It is an amazing amount of gain in the preamp, it easily drives any pair of headphones I own, and it's built like an absolute tank.

It's the perfect belt pack for a boom operator. Another winner for Sound Devices!

[2.33 lb] The ISA One is a great option for most situations that need a strong signal to help their recording pop. This pre has 80db of gain total and is much hotter than may other mixer/stand alone pres. The sound quality is bright and full. On guitars it gives a wonderful pump on the top and keeps the high frequencey detailed. If you are not used to a strong pre, this one will definately make you feel like your other pres are dark and colorless. The only complaint I have for this pre is that on very delicate sources like pianos or strings, it can add too much mid tones and make the strings sound very processsed rather than natural. This is not a negitave so much as it is a comment on its best uses. Again great for horns, guitars, bass, drums, and any other source that needs a little bit of pump to make the sound fuller.

[2.33 lb] I bought this to supplement my Manley and Presonus preamps in my studio. The ISA One is VERY transparent, and sounds great on any mic I plug into it. Plus the headphone out option is very handy when tracking vocalists in the booth so I can hear them while I'm arming and disarming tracks without any cutout in my monitors. Great value and very portable.

[2.33 lb] Before I begin, here is my set up: Sennheiser MKH 416 MM-1 Tascam DR100mkii It took some tinkering to figure out the best settings in this pipeline. I discovered this to be the best setting (for this set up): MM-1 Preamp at 46db and the DR100mkii at 7. This setting gave me the best audio output and lowest noise floor. Remember to set the input to LINE on your recorder! To get the same audio output on the Tascam itself, it would have to be on HIGH (on the back) and on 7 on the dial. Of course the audio was junk. But the MM-1 is able to give you a higher output with a lower noise floor. This is a small thing but I love the belt clip. I wanted to look into the MP-1 but it didn't have a clip. I was trying to build a simple and portable boom kit. The MM-1 is also lighter and easier to carry than expected. And it's built like a tank. I really don't have any gripes with this. Knobs are solid, the sound is solid...what's not to love? I don't know why you would look into this product but if its anywhere near what I was looking for, I definitely recommend it! :)

[-126 dBu (EIN)] This small and easy to mount preamp fits right on the back of a battery pack with velcro. The knobs are easier to use than those of the HD camera it is mounted on. The quality audio and limiter gives me much more confidence than the built-in limiter and audio pre of the camera.
