If you do use it for solar eclipse, you MUST, to keep your vision, add add a CERTIFIED solar eclipse filter to stop the very damaging UV light. A: The Ice 62mm ND100000 Solid Neutral Density 5.0 Filter (16.5-Stop) (B&H# ICND10000062) is designed to reduce the amount of visible light able to enter the lens of the camera. However, it will also slightly attenuate UV and IR light. As with all photography-grade solar filters, it is designed to minimize any reduction in sharpness sometimes associated with adding a filter to a lens. The amount of IR and UV light hitting the sensor during a typical exposure (or even many thousands of such exposures) while taking solar photos from Earth is not sufficient to damage it. The fact that such exposures are usually performed at f/8, f/11, or at an even higher F-number also works in favor of reducing the amount of total solar radiation hitting the sensor as UV and IR light hitting aperture blades are blocked completely. In fact, the sensors of most cameras (including that of the D850) already have an IR cut filter on them. As for the warning that appears on all product pages for photography-grade solar filters, that is in relation to using optical viewing methods with a human eye. With a Nikon D850 (or other SLR/DSLR), that would mean one should not use the optical viewfinder when pointing the camera at the sun.
