Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. what are the read/write speeds of nvme m.2 ssds when placed inside this enclosure? does it allow for full 40gb/s Thunderbolt 3 bandwidth?

A: The limiting factor would be the drives selected. Even nvme drives are still around 2500 MBs still are no where near 40gb/s on the Thunderbolt 3 connection.

Q: 2. Can I set this up as RAID 10? if so, what would the maximum transfer speed be?

A: I can shed a little light on the RAID 10 speed. I setup a 69GB RAID 10 and ran AJA System Performance Tester LITE 16.2.3 and here are the results... Short Version: Write - 1178 MB/s and Read - 2589 MB/s Disk Test Resolution: 8K File Size : 64 GB Codec : ProRes 4444 Drive : /Volumes/4M2R10 Cache : Disabled Video file: Movie Disk Write Test Number of frames = 2600 Write rate = 46 frames/second Write rate = 1178 MB/second Minimum rate = 626 MB/Sec Maximum rate = 1263 MB/Sec

Q: 3. Do you need to populate all slots at the same time or can you slowly buy storage. Say 4tb card every time one is full and raid them as you buy them ?

A: Yes, you will need to populate all the drives a the same time. SoftRAID Lite XT comes with this unit, which lets you RAID 1 and 0 of your choice. SoftRAID 5 is the currently version of SoftRAID. Please note that SoftRAID is not currently compatible with MacOS Big Sur, but is being worked on for a future patch to allow that. If you are using that OS, you can use Disk Utility instead to form your RAID volume.

Q: 4. Is this compatible with samsung 980 evo plus?

A: Yes, the OWC Express 4M2 4-Slot M.2 NVMe SSD Enclosure is compatible with the Samsung 980 drives.

Q: 5. Is the OWC 4M2 comopatible with... the Intel 2TB 670p NVMe M.2 Internal SSD BH #INSSDPEKNU2T MFR #SSDPEKNU020TZX1 ?

Q: 6. Can you use this with a USB-C card like the Sonnet Allegro card on an older Mac Pro 2012?

A: If your computer has Thunderbolt 3, then this will work with it. Not just a USB-C connection.

Q: 7. Is this compatible with a late 2015 5K Retina iMac? I want to be able to boot my iMacs operating system off of it

A: Yes, the OWC / Other World Computing Express 4M2 4-Slot M.2 NVMe SSD Enclosure B&H # OWTB3EX4M2SL is backwards compatible with a Thunderbolt 2 connection. You would need a Thunderbolt 2 cable and the Apple Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter. Keep in mind, this will limit your bandwidth to Thunderbolt 2 speeds of up to 20Gbps. Q: 8. Do all drives have to be same size / model?

A: You can have different memory size drives on this OWC Express 4M2 4-Slot M.2 NVMe SSD Enclosure, but keep in mind that would change the overall total of available storage. Any may change what type of RAID you may what to use.

[2800 MB/s ] Great little NVMe enclosure! Lets you run up to four (4) NVMe M.2 drives in a raid configuration. Very fast thunderbolt enclosure for a good price!

[2800 MB/s ] This is an updated review based on two-plus years of use and now adding a second unit to my system.

In my earlier review I complained about the unexpectedly noisy fan in the enclosure. (and I was not alone in this criticism). But I put up with it because I loved the functionality and performance. In fact, I recently decided to buy a second one when I needed more storage.
When it arrived, I was pleasantly surprised by the much quieter the new one is. (but also a little annoyed that OWC support had told me that nothing could be done when I complained about the original unit.) Anyway...the big difference between the older and newer units made it clear that they had changed the fan assembly in the newer ones. This prompted me to contact OWC to see if I could possibly buy a new fan to put in my old enclosure. Turns out you can! So $15 later, my old Express 4M2 is now just as quiet as the brand new one. I'm a happy camper.

PS
The performance continues to be excellent after almost three years.

[Aluminum] A lot of ppl complaining about the speeds on raid zero are getting low speed first why in the world would you put the lowest performance drives on this hello 660p are the worst nvme drives in the market tlc and qlc is a huge difference evo 970 Are the best. sabrent And inland Are cheaper and give really great results for your money

[3.86 lb] Got this for editing, threw 4 1TB WD Black SSD's in there in RAID 0 and the thing screams, 2300ish read and write. I hope they make and updated version that supports gen4 SSD's, I'm sure those will do like 7000-8000 read/write.

[Black] The OWC Express 4M2 is proving to be just what I expected. It's small, cool and quiet. I populated the box with 4 XPG 2TB SX8200 Pros and configured it as RAID4 with the free SoftRAID 6 upgrade. Plugged into my TB2 iMac, it's giving me 1300MB/s read, making 4k editing and grading a breeze.

[Aluminum] This thing is so reliable & kickass that I HAD to have it. I use SoftRaid XT with it @ Raid 5 w/ 4x 2TB inland SSD's and it SCREAMS. The speed is INSANE. OWC knocked it out of the park again!!

[Black] Bought this to use as a 16TB RAID5 drive, and I have been thrilled with it. The install and set up was a breeze, the software was simple and clear to use, and it has increased my transfer speeds massively. Can't recommend enough.

[2800 MB/s ] So the trick with this unit is that your speeds increase with RAID 0 the more slots you fill.  With a single 512GB SSD, I got 671MB/s write and 781MB/s read. Not bad, but certainly not in the 2,500MB/s range that I get with my Macbookss internal SSD.

But, when I filled all four slots with 512GB SSDs, I got 2,024MB/s write and 2,470 read speeds which is very close to my internal SSD.

One thing not mentioned, if your computer has TWO Thunderbolt buses, (not ports, but buses), then you can run two of these and RAID-0 them across both enclosures which is one of the advantages of Softraid. Then, leveraging both buses the two enclosure will deliver in the 3,500MB/s range of performance. Expensive, sure, but for pure speed in rendering , say, video, it may be worth it.

Only grip is the fan is a tad noisy and it would nice if it would power off the fan when possible , it seems to stay on as long as there is power.

Quality is top notch though and it just works.
