Shoot at staggering distances with the 125x optical zoom Nikon COOLPIX P1000 Digital Camera Review & Specsfrom Nikon. This camera, which has a 16MP backside illuminated CMOS sensor, features a built-in NIKKOR lens with a 35mm equivalent focal length range of 24-3000mm. You can zoom even further with 250x Dynamic Fine digital zoom, which will give you an equivalent focal length of 6000mm. Coupled with these extreme focal lengths is Nikon's Dual Detect Optical Vibration Reduction, which provides 5 stops of optical image stabilization and ensures your telephoto shots are crisp.

Gracing the back of the camera are a 3.2" vari-angle, 921k-dot LCD monitor and an eye-level 2.36m-dot electronic viewfinder, so your subjects will always be easy to see. The camera is also capable of recording 4K UHD video at 30 or 25 fps and supports an external microphone via a 3.5mm connector.

Camera shake may be a concern while shooting at extreme focal lengths on a tripod. Or, you may need to otherwise remotely operate the P1000. The optional ML-L7 remote satisfies these needs with wireless operation off the camera's zoom, shutter, and other settings. Once you're done with a shoot, immediately access your photos on a paired smartphone via the Nikon SnapBridge app and the camera's built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

The backside-illuminated sensor with 16 million effective pixels can output detailed images at sensitivities between ISO 100 and 6400. It can also create 4K UHD movies at 30 or 25 fps.

An absurd 24-3000mm (35mm equivalent) focal range means few, if any, objects are out of the reach of your lens. Zoom is further enhanced by Dynamic Fine digital zoom, which makes the maximum focal length a ridiculous 6000mm. Dual Detect Optical Vibration Reduction provides 5 stops of optical image stabilization so your handheld shots are crisp.

The P1000 features a bright vari-angle 3.2" LCD display that makes composing and reviewing images and movies a breeze. Also available is the 0.39", 2.36 million-dot OLED electronic viewfinder for a more traditional shooting style.

A control ring at the front of the device can be used for a variety of functions, like adjusting focus, exposure, white balance, and ISO, all from the lens barrel. Also on the barrel is a zoom toggle and a dedicated Snapback button that will make your P1000 quickly zoom out in case you lose sight of your subject at long focal lengths. Releasing the button will return the focal length to its previous position.

Nikon's SnapBridge technology allows for seamless photo sharing directly from your camera to a paired smartphone device.

The P1000 features a slew of shooting modes that adjust settings for different scenarios like sunsets, fireworks, and portraits. The popular Moon Mode is great for shooting Earth's closest neighbor and the new Bird Mode optimizes the camera for capturing the often bright and colorful creatures.

The ML-L7 remote (not included) can wirelessly adjust a variety of setting such as ISO, zoom, and aperture, in addition to triggering the shutter of the P1000. This lets you maintain precise composition while shooting from a tripod.

The EN-EL20a battery is rated for 250 shots per charge. Recharging takes only approximately 3 hours.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is it made in Japan or China or Thailand...?

A: This camera is made in Thailand.

Q: 2. Is there a lens cap included?

A: Yes there is!

Q: 3. does the nikon p1000 have bulb function?

A: Yes, you may use the bulb function once the camera is set to M (manual) mode via the mode dial.

Q: 4. Is this a Nikon USA item?

A: Not as of August 20, 2022. Item is imported and only carries a B&H warranty. Wonder why overseas has these in stock, but not here in the US.

Q: 5. I was excited about the P1000 shooting raw but now understand you can't shoot birds with it and Lightroom cannot handle it so what is the point? Also, will it allow fast continuous shooting e.g. a running animal or flying bird?

A: This camera is more than capable of taking pictures of wildlife, birds included. The quality of the results are far more dependent on your technique than on the capabilities of the camera. I am not aware of a DSLR that has a 3000mm lens with an effective stabilization system that is fast enough to take a picture in deep woods with no direct sunlight. I have taken pictures of birds (perched owls don't move much ) at the full 3000mm handheld at 1/125 of a second. You need a rest (a tree) to lean against and every shot isn't perfect, but enough are. I believe that it is possible to develop technique that will allow sharp pictures without a tripod at unbelievably low shutter speeds. Also, because of the nature of the evf, the finder is always bright. Focus, composition and exposure modification are much easier in the dark with this system, believe me. Lightroom works fine on the JPGs and you know that support will eventually be provided for raw. I printed my barred owl at about a 50% crop to 8x10 and the quality is superior. Remember, the advantage that this camera has is super long tele photography at ridiculously slow shutter speeds. All the stabilization in the world won't stop a hummingbird's wings at 1/125 of a second. Cameras are tools and the point of this one is to allow you to take pictures that would otherwise be beyond the capability of previously available equipment. It remains limited by all of those external distance related issues that have always been problems (heatwaves, haze, subject movement) and the like. Just as an aside the lens literally provides so much magnification that its hard to find the subject in the finder hence the red dot. This camera makes a walk through the woods in the late afternoon a meaningful photographic experience.era is about the same price as a long tele-zoom for a DX camera.

Q: 6. In the video you show, the camera comes with the lens hood but on your website it looks like its extra Which is it?

A: The lens hood is included with the camera according to the specs and Nikon's website.

Q: 7. I would like to buy Wide Angle, Macro Lens & Telephoto lens (zoom lens) for for Nikon P1000, can you please recommend me the best one?

A: When using the Nikon COOLPIX P1000 Digital Camera, one cannot mount any interchangeble lenses onto the camera. One could mount wide angle and telephoto adapter lenses if they would fit on the 77mm lens mount of the P1000, but the quality of the images would be distorted.

Q: 8. Touchscreen?

A: no touchscreen on the Nikon P1000

Q: 9. Past Nikon Coolpix cameras suffered from bad/slow focus in low light condition. Are there any test on that with P1000?

A: Initial reports say that the AF is good for a super zoom for most instances including sports. Low light and small objects may cause hunting. Once in hand, we all shall see.

Q: 10. Can the P1000 shoot videos and can it shoot for an unlimited/unrestricted time?

A: The Nikon Coolpix P1000 Digital Camera can capture UHD 4K video (3840 x 2160) at 25p/29.97p, Full HD video (1920 x 1080) at 25p/29.97p/50p/59.94p, and standard HD video (1280 x 720) at 25p/29.97p/50p/59.94p. Individual movie files cannot exceed 29 minutes in length, even when there is sufficient free space on the memory card for longer recording. The maximum file size for individual movies is 4 GB.

[4:3] I had a P900 and could hardly wait for the P1000 to come out. Only been shooting a few days with it but very pleased thus far. It's a good bit heavier than the P900 so that's taking getting use to since I am more elderly and don't have the strength I once had. If one shoots hand held, they have to expect a few losses due to non focused photos but once you get use to holding it still or using a tripod, it's fantastic. I ordered a battery charger since I prefer to charge outside the camera and the battery appears to drain fast. . . Overall - I love it!

[Yes, Flash Only] This is an amazing camera. The lens is extraordinary with close-up, portrait and landscape capability. It is the zoom that is mind-blowing with a massive 125x optical zoom. Yes, optical. Needless to say, a tripod (with one leg towards the subject to avoid tipping over!) or very steady rest is mandatory at anything like that magnification. It has a built-in flash, so it can do it all in one package. The control will be mastered in 30 seconds by anyone familiar with Nikon. Downside is a fairly weighty camera and rather bulky. Not something you would chuck in a bum bag. But, It handles confortably and is well balanced in the hand.

[2,359,000 Dot] I also own the P900 and the extra 1,000mm on the P1000 is outstanding. If someone is looking for a daily shooter, this isn't it (even though the low end of the range is 24mm). This is for birds and flowers in trees (static subjects) that you would not be able to capture closeup without the P1000. I regularly use an 800 and it isn't close. For best results, I use a cheap $20 tripod which makes a lot of difference especially as you close in on 3,000mm. While I'm not a tester, the images I've made so far do not lack for sharpness although I haven't really challenged the P1000 at the long end of its zoom range.

[1x Hot Shoe ] I got some great shots 9.2 miles away in Albuquerque. I also got some nice close ups, a video of a busy street and other shots 1 mile away. I am impressed. You have to have a very sturdy tripod and a remote for long shots. I really like this camera and I would recommend it even before testing the bird and moon modes which I will do soon. [Yes] Love the upgraded features from the P900. Particularly the ability to see the histogram and adjust the exposure settings. Quality (shooting in RAW) is wonderful.

Enjoying using it for wildlife and birds in the Tetons and Yellowstone!

[Auto] I am very happy with my new camera which is replacing my Nikon Cool Pix P900. My property is full of wildlife and these cameras are great for bringing the "subject" up closer for a better photo. LOVE IT.
I am also happy with B & H Photo. I've used them before and will use them again! THANK YOU!
