The Haida 72mm NanoPro MC UV/IR Cut Filteris an ultraviolet and infrared control filter that is useful for digital cinematography as well as still photography. While recording video with a CCD or CMOS camera, multi-stop neutral density filters are used to maintain proper exposure by compensating for increased light levels when widening the camera lens's iris to obtain a narrower depth of field. As the increased amount of light passes through multi-stop neutral density filtration, visible light is progressively blocked, while infrared light is allowed to pass through. As the proportion of infrared light that reaches the sensor of a camera being used for digital cinematography becomes greater, the results can show unwanted color shifts, particularly in dark areas of the frame such as shadows, where the appearance of black is dominant.

When the Haida 72mm NanoPro MC UV/IR Cut Filter is applied, ultraviolet light waves are blocked at 390 nanometers along with infrared light waves at 750 nanometers, helping to ensure that light falling on a digital camera sensor is limited to the visible spectrum. When used along with multi-stop neutral density filters while recording with a digital sensor, potential infrared color shifts are prevented or minimized, preserving color accuracy throughout the frame. This filter may also be used to help ensure that the appearance of unwanted blue casts is reduced while recording digital video or still photos under daylight that also features intense ultraviolet light.

The front and rear surfaces of a Haida 72mm NanoPro MC UV/IR Cut Filter each include eight layers of interference coatings, which allow it to limit the light that falls on a digital camera sensor to the visible spectrum. When combined with a wide-angle lens, lower-frequency wavelengths of visible light associated with yellow, orange, and red colors passing through the filter and along that lens type's curved edges can be impeded in a significantly greater degree than higher-frequency wavelengths of visible light associated with blue and violet colors. This can result in an unwanted green cast within an image taken with a Haida 72mm NanoPro MC UV/IR Cut Filter and a wide-angle lens. To avoid such color shifts using this filter, it is recommended not to be used with lenses that are intended to provide an angle of view greater than 60°.

The Haida 72mm NanoPro MC UV/IR Cut Filter is constructed from optical glass for clarity and color fidelity. To prevent internal ghosting and reflections, each glass surface includes 10 layers of anti-reflection coatings, which also offer greater protection to the filter substrate and help keep it clean for a longer period of time. The Nano coating associated with the Haida 72mm NanoPro MC UV/IR Cut Filter provides an additional layer that results in an improved beading effect when the surface comes in contact with water or oil, allowing for more efficient cleaning.

Ultraviolet light waves are blocked at 390 nanometers, reducing bluish cast of daylight when recording video or still photos.

Useful with CCD or CMOS sensors, infrared light waves are blocked at 750 nanometers to filter out infrared light pollution that cause color shifts frequently associated with high-definition recording with multi-stop neutral density filters.

Does not require adjustments to exposure while in use.

Eight layers of interference coatings on both front and rear surfaces limit light that falls on a digital camera sensor to the visible spectrum.

Constructed from optical glass for clarity as well as color fidelity.

Multi-coated to prevent internal ghosting and reflections.

Nano coating provides an additional layer that results in an improved beading effect when in contact with water or oil for greater cleaning efficiency.

Thin, aluminum-alloy filter ring helps to prevent vignetting while remaining durable and lightweight.

72mm front filter threads allow for use with other filters.

Plastic filter case for storage and transport.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can it be used on NIKKOR Z 800mm f/6.3 VR S Lens ?

A: Yes the B+W UV-IR Cut #486 MRC Basic Filter (46mm) is compatible with the Nikon 800mm f6.3 Z lens.

Q: 2. Does this filter allow to directly photograph a solar eclipse without damaging de camera sensor?

A: No, an eclipse will certainly damage your sensor with this filter. You would need an strong nd filter at the very least, like a 25 stop nd.

Q: 3. Hello, I've read a review telling that when using a UV/IR filter on WIDE Angle Lenses the image can be compromised: the interference varies with the angle of incidence of the light on the glass. This renders this filter unusable with wide-angle and even normal focal lenses, resulting in a greenish gradient from the center to the corners. - This was posted for the 72mm version of another brand's filterQ: Has someone else experienced this problem on Full Frame or APS-C DSLRs with Wide Angle Lenses like 16mm ?Thank you very much in advance!

A: UV/IR blocking filters work ideally for lenses with an aperture angle up to 60. The principle of such an interference filter is an aperture angle-dependent color influence that is dictated by physical principles, and as the angle of the incident light increases it drifts towards blue, i.e. for wide-angle lenses, from an aperture angle larger than 60, the color reproduction at the edge of the image tends to lean towards bluish.

Q: 4. Will this fit in Lee filter holder?

A: Yes, the Haida 100 x 100mm NanoPro MC Clear-Night Filter will fit in the Lee filter holder.

Q: 5. Has anyone used this in combination with a pro mist filter? If so, what are the effects?

A: To our knowledge, this filter has not been tested in conjunction with a pro mist filter. Your results may vary.

Q: 6. What order should this go on the lens? Before or after mist filter?

A: I recommend placing the NiSi 82mm UV IR-Cut Filter for True Color VND and Swift System first, since it is the clearest filter, and stacking the mist filter after.

Q: 7. Would this filter work with Kase magnetic step-up rings? Kase does not make a 72mm light pollution filter.

A: Yes, you could use the Haida NanoPro Magnetic Clear Night Filter without Adapter Ring with a Kase Magnetic Step-Up Ring.

Q: 8. Is this filter enough for taking photographs to a solar eclipse without damaging the camera?

A: No, you need a specialized solar filter. This is far from strong enough to aim at the sun for extended periods of time.

Q: 9. So, does this Digital Filter pretty much an even higher quality, more affective UV Filter?

A: Filters are made of the filter material, the glass it is in, the glass coatings and the metal ring. The higher the cost, the higher the quality of all materials and the better the optical result. After a point, however, it is like cars where you can get a comfortable Ford Focus (like Hoya) or a luxury BMW (like Heliopan.)

Q: 10. Does this come in 72mm?

A: Unfortunately no. The NiSi 77mm UV IR-Cut Filter for True Color VND and Swift System is only made in the 77mm or 82mm sizes.

[72 mm] If you've spent far too much time color correcting your footage to try and fix those ugly colors from all the IR pollution in your bmpcc, then this is the filter for you. Close to outfitting all of my lenses with these for protection/IR cutting, and would recommend to any and all owners of the bmpcc 4k/6k or UMP 4.6k pro.

[0.125 lb] For the money, I think this is a great filter. I particularly like the fit and finish and that it is very thin. I use it on one of the new Hasselblad X lenses and it's perfect, unobtrusive.

[0.125 lb] I love it because it now it converted our full spectrum camera to a useable interview B camera as well allowing us to use it outside! Just have to use it with manual white balance due to a red hue color. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to make their full spectrum camera useable outside.

[72 mm] Have used Hoya filters for many years with my cameras. This is a different one with both UV and IR filtering but initial photos taken are on par if not better than those with my previous Hoya filter. Since my camera for me is an expensive one, I wanted a quality filter and feel that Hoya and this one in particular serve that purpose.

[0.125 lb] I had more than just cold feet prior to purchasing this filter but once I mounted it to my Carl Zeiss lens I was sold. I like my B+W lens filters but I can really tell the difference with this one. For those that have Carl Zeiss glass you are a know just tell neutral their lenses can be. This is a good thing but this particular filter gives just a slight tad of vibrance to the files that's absolutely splendid.. The only downside is that you'll want to end up replacing your other filters for these and that can be monstrously expensive. BTW, even though the product ad doesn't state that it's a slim version, it is in fact so marked on the box. Highly recommended
