The Lightware BP1417 GripPack is backpack that serves as a shooter's bag as well as a travel bag. It is made from ballistic nylon and its exterior is watertight and tough. A: I fly with this bag monthly and I've never had an issue with an airline accepting it in checked baggage. I fly Southwest Airlines a lot, and as long as it's not more than 50lbs, they've never charged me for excessive or oversized baggage. You can get a lot gear in this bag and keep it under 50 lbs.

A: 39 inches will fit. Measuring mine with a tape measure, it has 39.5 inches of interior length. While the bottom (The end with the wheels) has a firm wall to it, the top (handle end) has some give to it. There's probably enough give in the fabric to accommodate 40 inches, but 39 will fit pretty much exactly, with no stretching.

A: I can't answer if it will fit your Subaru but I can tell you I really like this case. It holds four Manfrotto stackable stands plus a Cheetah stand and a bunch of adapters in the main compartment. I have multiple 45 umbrellas and a 3' Profoto Octi in the pockets. You should know if you are going to fill it up the width can increase substantially. I just measured mine as nearly 17 across, and I would not call it overloaded. I love rolling into a gig with all of my lighting in one bag.
