Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. best camera for canon xf705 or Sony pxw z280

A: Both are great camcorders, it is hard to go wrong with either. Both offer 4K recording at up to 60fps. The Z280 has a 17x optical zoom while the XF705 has a 15x optical zoom. The Z280 has a Three 1/2" CMOS Sensor system, while the XF705 has a 1" sensor. In many cases it will come down to brand preference and which look you prefer more than anything else.

Q: 2. Have you had any problems mounting a light on this camera with a shotgun mic attached?

A: It's possible that depending on the size and model of the on-camera light, there may be some issues with clearance, but using an additional shoe mount adapter like the one illustrated here, should solve the problem: https://bhpho.to/3dJmeTJ

Q: 3. Will the camera accept an external battery plugged into the DC power port?

A: The XF705 comes with an AC Power Supply included. If you still have additional questions feel free to email us directly at askbh@bhphoto.com.

Q: 4. How will this camera handle low light theatre and wedding venues?

A: It should handle low light situations very well. It has a 1" CMOS sensor with dual DIGIC DV 6 processors that provide high sensitivity.

Q: 5. What are the slow motion options in UHD 4:2:2, 10 bit?

A: This camcorder allows for UHD 4K 10 Bit 422 at up to 60fps. That can be a 2x Slow Motion on a 30fps timeline or 2.5x on a 24fps timeline.

Q: 6. PICTURE PROFILE?

A: Yes, the XF705 has a number of different Preset Color Settings and a Custom Color Setting.

Q: 7. Will the XF705 HEVC work with Final Cut Pro X?

A: Yes, Final Cut Pro X has full support for HEVC (H.265) format.

Q: 8. Can Adobe Premiere import files shot by this camera in H.264 (1920x1080), without needing any conversion?

A: Yes Adobe Premiere can. The latest version of Adobe Premiere is able to handle H.264 files.

Q: 9. I am a stringer for 6ABC in Phila.. We still use 1280 X 720 at 59 FPS. Is this camera able to record in that mode?

A: At this time 720p is not listed as supported with the XF705.

Q: 10. Is there any Battery V-Plate adapter compatible with this camera?

A: We are not aware of a V-Mount Battery Plate for this camera.

[Stereo ] I purchased a XF705 from B&H approximately 7 months ago. I have been waiting patiently for a FCPX upgrade to allow the H.265 files to be ingested to FCPX. Good News...with the recent upgrade to FCPX, ver 10.4.7, I can import the XF705 H.265 files directly into FCPX. I am running macOS Mojave, ver 10.14.6. My iMac computer was manufactured in late 2015. I have to use proxy files for editing, otherwise my computer hangs up.

[f/2.8] You can rename the file from .mxf to .mpg and then Adobe Media Encoder will recognize it. You can convert the file to 10 bit ProResHQ 422.

[JPEG] As we acquire more advanced multimedia storytelling skills, using the camera has to become almost second nature to us. The real emphasis evolves from which camera and lens to use into always being ready to capture the story as it unfolds with interviews and supporting that story with plenty of supporting B roll media and stills.

The alternative is simply missing the action or out of focus stuff while fiddling with a cinema camera. For solo shooters or a very small crew, the new Canon XF705 will do a fantastic job for most all projects. Its ease of use, solid feel, shallow DOF and low light capabilities, ability to shoot 4k on fast inexpensive SDXC cards offers a very different workflow to using a Cinema camera and heavy rail system much less trying to keep those Cinema lenses in focus.

As of today, the Canon utility for the brand new camera allows you to view the 4k media on either a PC or Mac, but neither FCP X, nor Adobe are able to ingest that media. That will be coming soon they tell me.

Well worth the money!

[21.5 W] This Camcorder exceeds all my expectations. I came from the Sony PXW-Z190 and I do miss the 25X optical zoom but now I have more clarity and 4K is awesome. The recording in HEVC files makes the files half the size of the regular .264 or MPEG files with double the quality. The 30X zoom is very usable. The slow motion is buttery smooth. The U30 battery that comes with it won’t give you all day recording, so get the U60 for that. The Canon L glass shows clear and precise. I haven’t tested low light yet, but the groups and forums on Facebook have tested and uploaded clips that say its a winner in that regard as well. The biggest compliment is the use of SD cards...Initially I was leary about getting this camcorder because FCPX couldn’t read the HEVC files...6 months later, FCPX can read the files and edit them. Just be sure you have a fairly newer MacBook Pro because I have two, one I bought in 2014 and the newer one I bought in 2017...I recorded two different church services and loaded each on the different laptops. The newer 2017 model processed the files with no problem, but the older 2014 would load in FCPX but that’s it. So I took a clip 30 seconds long, updated my software, updated FCPX and tried, still no processing or saving the clip...So now I will be getting a new MacBook Pro to make sure I have a New Laptop that I know should work and also a backup in my 2017...Oh and Canon just released a new firmware for the XF705 with some nice improvements and fixed some problems people were experiencing...I didn’t have any problems but then again I’ve only had it two weeks...It’s not cheap but if you got about 8000 laying around go for it...

[JPEG] The Canon XF Plugin 3.4.1 for Avid Media Access [macOS] was released last week and after installing, I’ve been using AVID Media Composer to AMA link to the HEVC .265 UHD files from the XF705 and transcoding them to DNxHR HQX successfully. I’m not a tech analyst, but everything finally looks good to me. I’m just starting to use the camera, but the combination of the color and the above average lens, makes this camcorder a step above the others.

[15x] bought this solely for the smaller size, autofocus tracking and 10 bit 4:2:2 as i already own cinema counterparts, does not disappoint!
