The non-rotating Tiffen 85B Linear Polarizer Filter Series 9combines both an 85B color conversion filter with a linear polarizing filter to blend the effects of both filter types into a single, convenient solution.

The 85B color conversion aspect of the filter provides a warming effect and decreases the color temperature from 5500K to 3200K, allowing the use of tungsten balanced film in daylight conditions.

The linear polarizing aspect of the filter helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface. This results in a noticeable increase in the saturation of skies and foliage, as well as clearer imagery when photographing in hazy conditions. A linear polarizer differs from a circular polarizer in that it does not supports use of a camera's autofocus or auto exposure functions; it is best suited for use with manual cameras, such as view cameras, that are not dependent on internal mechanisms to determine focus or metering settings.

There is a total filter factor of about 6x, requiring an increase of 2.6 stops for normal exposure. Tiffen filters are made using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass, grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch, and then mounting to precision metal rings. The non-rotating design of this filter is best-suited for use with lens hoods, adapters, or other rings for rotational control over the polarizing substrate. It is compatible with Series 9 filter holders.

Linear polarizer and 85B amber color conversion filter combination.

Total filter factor of approximately 6x requires 2.6 stops of additional exposure for normal results.

Warming 85B color conversion filter decreases color temperature from 5500K to 3200K for using tungsten-balanced film in daylight conditions.

Polarizer helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface.

Clears up haze in distant landscapes and provides more saturated, vivid colors.

Strongest polarizing effect when used at a 90° angle from the sun.

Non-rotating design is best-suited to use with lens hoods or adapter rings in order to best control the polarizing effect of the filter.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Will I need to buy any kind of rotating adapter to drop this in? I have a matte box (on order) that states: 2 universal 360 degree rotating filter stages + 2 filter trays that support both 4x4 and 4x5.65 filter sizes

A: Which matte box did you purchase? Does it accept 138mm filters?

Q: 2. Was this made for film or digital? Do you have to angle it slightly for digital?

A: The Tiffen 4 x 5.65" Ultra Pol Linear Polarizer Filter, being a linear polarizer, is not good for digital photography. For digital photography, you would want to use a circular polarizing filter. Here is a link to the circular polarizing filter options in the 4 x 5.65" size: https://bhpho.to/4dOpbz9.

Q: 3. What is the size of this filter?

A: Series 9 filters by Tiffen are a unique filter system once popular with older lens and camera design. Requiring a Series 9 adapter ring, this system allows you to use one standard size filter (Series 9) on many lens sizes. Series 9 filters, although screw-on style, require a bit more work to set up. The glass filter drops into the adapter ring and is held securely in place with the included retaining ring (adapter ring sold separately). Series 9 filters have no threads. Although these filters are no longer as popular as they used to be, they allow the use of filters for harder to fit lenses, a common problem with older camera lenses.

Q: 4. Will this work with the Wooden Camera Zip Box Pro 4.5in Round Filter Stage?

A: Hi, this filter is compatible. with the Wooden Camera Zip Box Pro 4.5in Round Filter Stage.

Q: 5. Thickness of the filter

A: 4mm

Q: 6. What is the differences between this model and http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/398871-REG/Schneider_68013038_138_mm_True_Linear_Polarizing.htmlIt seems like its just different descriptions but the same product. The only noticeable difference is a 10 year warranty on the more expensive model. What exactly does this cover? Does it cover it breaking?

A: Basically, there are two types of Polarizing filters; Linear and Circular. Linear are used for manual focusing as they can confuse AF sensors. Circular filters are designed for AF lenses and cameras but can be used on manual focus cameras as well. For more details on the two, please see: http://bhpho.to/MF21zoThe Schneider 138mm True-Linear Polarizing Glass filter is optimized for motion picture and television cameras. Having an extinction ratio of ER 374, the Schneider True-Pol is 12-times more effective than other polarizing filters. The 138mm Circular Ultra Polarizing Filter from Tiffen is a similar filter yielding a more intense look to your images and is designed for AF cameras. Because of manufacturing differences, circular polarizing filters cost more than comparable linear filters. Both filters come with ten year warranties that cover manufacturing or workmanship defects.

Q: 7. how is this designed to work? Does it need a 138mm circular polarizer in combination with this filter?

A: You would need a holder that will take this size filter. The exact holder depends in part on the lens you are using.

Q: 8. What is the difference between Ultra Pol Circular vs Ultra pol LINEAR? Which one will work best in my matte Shape-2 4x4 case and with my Sony A7SII?

A: Circular Polarizers are designed for use with auto or manual focus lenses, while linear polarizers are best used with manual focus lenses.

Q: 9. What is the difference between Ultra Pol Circular vs Ultra pol LINEAR? Which one will work best in my matte Shape-2 4x4 case and with my Sony A7SII?

A: If you are also using a variable ND on your camera and want to use a polariser as well, you definitely need a circular one as a linear polariser will cause a colour shift as you rotate it.

Q: 10. Since you are out of stock on the Tiffen 49mm Cir. Pol., can I use a linear polarizer instead on a mirrorless camera? My recollection is that Cir. Polarizer was developed to compensate for the effect of the mirror on light measurement in the camera, and if so, then shouldn’t be necessary for mirrorless camera.

A: Yes, a linear polarizer will have no effect on metering or autofocus (PDAF or CAF) in a mirrorless camera, which historically would cause metering and autofocus issues in cameras with mirrors or single-translucent lenses (SLTs).

[0.3 lb] Just the tweak I needed with my Canon 1.8 50mm lens. Great price too!

[Aluminum] I bought this polarizing filter to go on the new Canon T1i camera I bought recently from B&H. I shopped all over for this particular camera and B&H ... had the lowest price! Love my camera. The colors for my sunny daytime shots were a bit washed out and I realized that I needed this polarizing filter. It arrived in just a couple of days. I can see a great difference in the before and after shots. The polarizer really helps to deepen the colors and remove unwanted reflections. This is one of the least expensive items you can buy that will give you very visible results in your photos along with protecting your lens. I'm very pleased with it.

[0.3 lb] Completely satisfied with this product; cuts down on haze, cuts through reflections, and gives me a slightly more saturated, rich color on my camera. Should note that the filter comes in a standard hard plastic case which can be used to store it.

[0.3 lb] In summer, when sun angles are high, it is difficult to get nice blue skies. But with this cheap polarizer filter, one can restore those washed out colors by reducing glare and improving dynamic range. A must have for anyone who does landscape photography.

[Aluminum] As a filter to protect my 18-135 Nikor AF lens this product works perfectly. Further it polarizes as it should reducing glare when shooting water surfaces and glass windows or into the Sun.

[0.3 lb] I still have Tiffen filters from my father's camera from the 1970's, they are that good. This polarizer is no exception. It is useful for taming reflections on water and controlling over-bright sunny skies, helping the blues look bluer.
