Cherished for sports and wildlife applications, the Canon EF 600mm f/4L IS III USM Lensis a Canon EF 600mm f/4L IS III USM LensL-series super telephoto lens distinguished by its advanced, lightweight design, quick and intuitive handling, and high speed performance. Using fluorite, Super UD, and aspherical elements, both chromatic and spherical aberrations are kept to minimum in order to realize sharp, clear image quality with accurate rendering and color fidelity. Both Super Spectra and Air Sphere Coatings also contribute to color accuracy and helps to control flare and ghosting when working in backlit and harsh lighting conditions.

In addition to its optical merits, the 600mm f/4 is also characterized by its advanced five stop-effective Image Stabilizer system, which has three separate stabilization modes to suit various shooting applications. Also complementing handling is a sophisticated ring-type USM, which provides quick, quiet, and accurate autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. A customizable electronic focusing ring further contributes to precise manual focus control, by affording three focusing sensitivity levels for different applications. Additionally, this lens is weather-sealed for use in trying environmental conditions and it has a removable rotating tripod collar to benefit working atop a tripod or monopod.

Super telephoto prime is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount DSLRs, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 960mm equivalent focal length.

Bright f/4 maximum aperture affords control over depth of field for working with selective focus techniques.

Super UD and fluorite elements are used to greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to achieve greater clarity and color accuracy.

Aspherical elements help to limit spherical aberrations and distortion for greater sharpness and accurate rendering.

Super Spectra and Air Sphere Coatings have been applied to individual elements to control lens flare and ghosting for greater contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.

An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to five shutter speed stops to better enable working in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds. Three distinct IS modes are available: standard single-shot mode, a panning-optimized mode, and a mode that only activates the Image Stabilizer during the exposure.

A ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM), along with optimized focusing algorithms and a high-speed CPU, is employed to deliver fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override.

Customizable electronic focusing ring provides three sensitivity levels for how quickly and precisely the lens can manually focus.

Focus Preset function is available to quickly recall a programmed focusing position.

Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.

As a member of the esteemed L-series, this lens is sealed against dust and moisture for working in inclement environmental conditions and also features a fluorine coating on the front and rear elements to guard against water spots, smudges, or oil residue.

Removable rotating tripod collar is included and benefits working with the lens atop a tripod or monopod.

Compatible with optional EF 1.4X and EF 2X teleconverters.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Does the 600mm iii come with a hood or do I have to buy it separately?

A: A Canon ET-160 (WIII) Lens Hood is included with this lens.

Q: 2. Has there been any announcement is this lens will be available with RF mount?

A: No announcements yet, as of September 2020.

Q: 3. Is the 600mm longer or thicker in comparison to the 500mm II ? Question is to know if it gets in the LowPro bag i hold the 500 in

A: Yes, the 600mm is larger in diameter and longer than the 500mm by 1.7" in length and 1" in diameter.

Q: 4. is it compatible with 1dx mk 2?

A: Yes, fully compatible.

Q: 5. Ryan, if you're out there, I would be very interested to know if Canon's 18Nov2019 firmware update solved your IS issues (which you posted a detailed review about on 11Sep2019)?

A: Update: the following issue has been addressed via a firmware update. Note that a 600mm III lens image stabilization problem was being reported by, initially, some 5D Mark IV and other camera users. Reportedly, this lens produced a ghost-like blur at longer shutter speeds when shooting through the viewfinder with IS enabled. Initial reports indicated that 1/250 or 1/200 and longer shutter speeds produced this effect and further reports specify that the blur disappeared at 1/250 and only longer shutter speeds are concerned (1/160 was reportedly the worst). Again, this issue has been addressed by firmware update v1.1.2.

Q: 6. Does preordering this lens still qualify for the 4% reward as given on th Mk2 version?

A: Currently, rewards points are not available for version III

Q: 7. I own version II of this lens and want to upgrade to version III. I also own both a 5D Mark IV and a 5R. I am concerned that version III image stabilization will not work well with either camera. Is there any update on this issue particularly with the Canon 5R?

A: Canon did release a firmware update for this lens that addresses known focusing issues with this lens.

Q: 8. The latest Firmware on my lens is 1.1.2 I'm surprised a bit that it hadn't been updated since I just purchased the lens recently. How do I go around it. Do I send the lens back or update the newest Firmware 1.1.3 myself ?

A: The lens is very easy to update. First go to this link here. https://bit.ly/3tBwhAR That link takes you to the specific webpage that allows you to download the firmware version 1.1.3 for your lens. All you need to do is download the firmware and copy it into a clean formatted memory card.

Q: 9. Does the lens hood lock on like on the Canon 100-400 II?

A: It locks on but not in the same way. The 100-400mm has a traditional bayonet mount: align, twist, and it clicks into locked position. The 600mm hood fits on to the hood mount and then you tighten the lock knob to secure it. See page ENG -19 OF MANUAL: http://gdlp01.c-wss.com/gds/9/0300033279/01/ef600f4lisiiiusm-im-eng.pdf

Q: 10. Does a 52mm clear glass come with the drop in filter?

A: It does not.

[26 x 16 x 15"] Looks to me more like diffraction softness than a lens defect. Most of the newer lenses are sharpest at around f/8 or f/11. While I appreciate the need for smaller f/stops with a 600mm lens, the difference in sharpness, whether lens performance or diffraction, though noticeable to a critical eye when enlarged to this extent, it is in my experience well within the capabilities to be equalized by the better sharpening programs say from Topaz Labs, ON 1, Projects and Landscape Pro. I am less sure of the ancient sharpening algorithm used by PS but I find that every digital photograph I've seen in the past 10 years, no matter what the lens/camera combination, benefit by some post shooting sharpening. I photograph mostly fast moving objects, airplanes, birds and cars, so having a lens that weighs almost 2# less, has better balance and may focus just a little faster matters quite a lot to me when photographing two airplanes converging on each other at 1000 ft/sec. And the weight and balance matters even more when you are at events that last 6-7 hours. I also am a user of the 1DX III and the full range of Canon EF lenses from 11mm-600mm -sfoAlan

[600mm] I've always wanted a long lens for wildlife photography. I'm older & was unsure if I could handle the weight of the 600 & 800 mm lenses. So when this new version came out & was lighter, I decided this was the "one". It's not so heavy that I can't hand hold it. I've used it for distance pics & as a Macro Lens. I'm glad I purchased it.

[Yes] I am writing this review for both he 400mm f/2.8 IS III & 600mm f/4.0 IS III. I had the opportunity to test the 400mm, 600mm, 500mm f/4.0 II, 200-400mm f/4.0, and had my own 300mm f/2.8 IS II. These are the things that deserve highlighting:

(1) Weight: The 400 and 600 are lighter than any of the lenses. The 200-400 is by far the heaviest.
(2) Balance: Both the 400 and 600 have the best center balance.
(3) Focus: The 400 and 600 provided the fastest auto focus.
(4) Image Quality: This is hard to explain unless you place the images side by side with the 400 or 600. The 400 and 600 performed miraculously, even in low lighting for a sport venue.

I had no intention, nor was I looking to purchase a new lens. Up to this point, my plan was to wait for Canon to release an updated 200-400mm zoom. I've used the 200-400mm lens in the past and absolutely loved it, but some of the sporting venues experienced low lighting once the sunset and the 200-400mm did not perform well. Now, I'm in a dilemma. I've been saving money for the new Mac Pro (and monitor) due later this year and I cannot stop thinking about the 400 and 600. As a side note, I installed the Canon 1.4x III extender on the 400mm and found the results came out just as clear.  My recommendation, go see one for yourself and if you have a version II, bring it with you so you can see and feel the difference.

[f/4] Moving up from a consumer 150 - 600mm. Difference in image quality is night and day. Shot mostly with a 1.4x TC on a 5d4 body. Amazing results. Fairly light, definitely handholdable. Worth every cent.

[0.15x] Outrageously expensive but you get what you pay for. Breathtaking images, fast and accurate autofocus, unbelievably lightweight for its size. I love this lens.

[Full-Frame] An amazing lens- quality of photos is unparalleled, light weight for such a long lens, and properties are really useful. The lens is very hand holdable which makes it useful in situations where setting up a tripod is not possible or there isn’t enough time to set one up and still get the shot. I didn’t think about having the ability to preset focus points when purchasing the lens, but find that really useful in the field with bird photography. It will also be good when photographing wildlife. It is expensive, will be used much more than I even thought.

[26 x 16 x 15"] I contemplated buying this for about a year, but after finally deciding to do it I am very happy. If you can come to terms with the cost, you will not be disappointed with the pictures you will get.
