The Tiffen 77mm Center Spot Filter for Photographyis a softening filter that allows you to maintain sharp, clear focus in the center of the image while blurring the perimeter of the frame. This helps to isolate your central subject matter while softening the surrounding areas.

Tiffen filters are made using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass, grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch, and then mounting to precision metal rings.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Hello, I did read a review telling that when using a IR/UV Cut filter on Wide Angle Lenses the image can be compromised: the interference varies with the angle of incidence of the light on the glass. This renders this filter unusable with wide-angle and even normal focal lenses, resulting in a greenish gradient from the center to the corners. - this was posted for the 72mm version of an IR/UV Cut filter of another brand.- Q: Did someone else has this problem on Full Frame & APS-C DSLRs with Wide Angle Lenses like 16mm with THIS Tiffen W77IR filter?Thank you very much!

A: Hi HD Cam T,I purchased this filter to correct a known IR contamination defect in the Sony EX-1 camcorder. Black suits turn different shades of brown depending on their material without the filter. An orchestra of black suits will look like everyone is wearing a different shade of off black tuxes. But some will be true black. I only use the filter when I need it. I manually white balance the camera when using the IR filter. The image has a green cast if you do not white balance. You also loose about a half an f stop with the filter. Not a perfect fix for my camera but it is the only one I have found.

Q: 2. Considering this filter for the Sigma 50-100mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art lens, so vignetting should not be an issue for a telephoto. However, lack of front threads or provision for a lens hood is an issue. Is there a solution?

A: Hey Danny I haven't found a solution for a good, but never look hard after a solution either. I use it with my L series zooms and I can't never use lens hood with it. It is one of the smallest nd out there but still not small enough. Hope it helps

Q: 3. Does this filter out UV as well as IR? Is there a light transmission graph for this filter anywhere? My goal is to find a filter that lets in UV (and visible is OK too), but not IR above 650 or 700nm. Thank you!

A: This filter only cuts IR light. For transmission data, please submit a request via https://tiffen.com/pages/contact

Q: 4. Could you tell me this filter thickness? I Use on wide-angle lensthanks !

A: The glass is 2mm thick

Q: 5. Does this Tiffen filter come in the hard plastic case made specifically for that filter?

A: Yes it does come with its protective case.

Q: 6. It is really worth to have this filter when using a lot of nd filtering? Like to use nd1.2 and nd9 combined when shooting for ex 4K with a A7S? Do you really noticemthat difference?

A: It depends on your camera... is your cameras sensor known to have IR issues? Are you doing long exposures where IR pollution can be a problem? If the answer is yes, then this filter will help to eliminate the IR pollution.

Q: 7. What is the filter factor for Tiffen 812 warming filter? Can I use canon software to warm up skin tone instead of buying this filter? If yes, how much correction in software will I need to mimic the effect of this filter?

A: The filter factor for the Tiffen 812 is 1/3 stop

Q: 8. What does this filter do? Does it cause a prism effect or what? None of your filters explain their effect and I can't find them anywhere else online.

A: "Rainbow Center Spot Filter- Creates rainbow effect from reflective surfaces with a clear center spot." I have alerted our webteam. We apologize for any confusion and inconvenience.

Q: 9. Is this yellow filter just for use with B&W photos, I take aerial color photos, I need it to cut the haze but will it mess up the color?

A: All previous responses are correct. A yellow filter, when used with color film, will produce a yellow hue over your entire image. A haze filter or a polarizing filter is your best choice for your aerial photos.

Q: 10. WHAT NM RANGE DOES THIS FILTER DETECT?

A: Blocks all visible light and passes IR light 720 nm and above

[0.18 lb] I use this filter to soften the surrounding areas behind the subject in portrait photos or when I really want to put the focus of the picture on the subject but still have color in the background.

[0.18 lb] Rated at +1.2/3rd stops, I'm getting wonderful results with Kodak TMax BW 120mm film. Basically, I'm rating / setting on
my hand held meter at ISO at 120 when I shoot. I still develop in D76 @ 8 minutes at 69-70 degrees single tank developing. I've been shooting with a Mamiya M6, a Mamiya C330 Pro S, and a Mamiya RB 67 Pro SD, and the results with all three cameras are just what the doctor ordered! Brilliant contrast and tonal/texture range without the blowouts of a Orange #22 or Red (plus 3-stops) filter.

[0.18 lb] Unlike other star filters that provide a uniform more sterile look, this filter provides a softer more natural burst and because the bursts are not parallel, each one varies a bit in intensity. There are times when it also adds an almost prism like effect where it extracts colors from a white light. Sometimes that's good, other times not so much, but the unique look provided is quite pleasant and for the right situation, can't be beat.

[0.18 lb] You see the picture and think, why is it purple? Buy with confidence because it is not purple. It's super blue. Deep blue, to be precise. When you hold it up to your eye to the light, you'll see it's clearly blue.
