Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. how to connect this matte box with 24mm rokinon cine lens?

A: These clamp onto the external diameter of the front of the lens - in this case 83mm diameter.

Q: 2. Will 3.35 x 3.35 filters fit in this one?

A: Yes and no. the paperwork supplied with this matte box expressly claims cokin P filters will fit "loosly in slot" I assume that means without the filter tray, though I cant see how that works unless you rotate the back filter position and slide the filter in sideways, otherwise it would simply fall out of the bottom

Q: 3. How much vertical adjustment is the matte box capable of? I wanted to use a Hoodman HLVKIT Live View Kit with my D810, which will slightly raise the camera height.

A: According to Cavision this matte box set should have no problem covering the extra height created by the HLVKIT on the D810. It has approximately 2.4cm of height adjustment. The minimum distance from rods center to matte box (ie lens) center is 10.2mm and the maximum is 12.6mm. Also of note: the plate portion at the back of the rods system will elevate the camera approximately 4.2cm above the rods center.

Q: 4. Can fit Cokin P Series filters (86mm)?

A: Is Cokin P filter 84mm in width instead of 86mm? cokin "P" filters fit loosely in filter stage slots only without using a filter tray. You can use filter tray locks on the side of the matte box to hold it in place.

Q: 5. In the product description, with regards to compatibility, it states: ...and most DSLR cameras with small to medium size lenses . I am assuming this rig would be compatible with a Nikon D810 and a Sigma 50mm 1.4 Art lens?

A: This should work fine with the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Lens for Nikon F as well as the Nikon D810 as long as the camera is not on a grip.

Q: 6. The 85mm lens opening sounds non-standard. If the cinema lenses I'm considering have an 80mm opening, is it safe to expect this matte box to be able to clamp down from 85mm to 80mm in order to grip the cinema lens properly?

A: The Cavision 3x3 Matte Box Package has a flexible material draw-string light trap that will accommodate lenses from 85mm down to 50mm. This will prevent stray light from hitting the filters in the matte box from the rear.

Q: 7. I'd like to use this hood on a wide angle converter lens (16x9 Inc. 169-HDWC8X-72 EXII 0.8x Wide Angle Converter) with the Sony FDR AX-100 camera. The hood web site says it can work with a bit wider lenses. The outside diameter of the converter lens is 98mm (with a filter size of 105mm - I don't understand but those are the numbers I keep getting?). I prefer to not use rails for this small camera. Thanks

A: The rear clamp for this matte box is 85mm and cannot accommodate 105mm or 98mm. As far as not using rails, such a small camera cannot accommodate such large conversion lenses and matte boxes without them.

Q: 8. Is there a step down to 95mm thread available?

A: We would have to recommend not using this on a lens that is larger than it's rear opening. We feel that vignetting would be far too likely.

Q: 9. Hi, can this fit OVER the Sony FE PZ 28-135mm F4 G OSS. I want to use the 95mm thread to attach my NISI VND filter at the same time as the matt box. So I guess I need something like a 114mm - 104/5?mm non threaded adaptor, tham make sure the filter can freely turn within the matt box.

A: Yes, the Cavision 4 x 5.65" Matte Box Kit will work with the Sony 28-135 lens.

Q: 10. Is the stationary stage compatible with 4x4 trays? Or will it only accept the included 4x5.65?

A: The 4x5.65 is the stationary one.

[270°] This little beauty works so well on my little PXW-X70. I use it mainly with a B&W 3x3 polariser. The filter holder itself works just as well in the field as anything by Vocas or Chriszeil. The first stage rotates smoothly. Unfortunately there is no tightening screw to keep the first stage in place. To tighten it you need an Allen wrench to hand. And as anyone who uses a clamp-on matte box knows, you really need to tighten the filter holder notch once you've put the filter in or it will fall out the bottom, there being no rails to prevent it.

Apart from that, no complaints. The rubber lens hood is the same size and shape as a standard Fujinon broadcast lens. You can use the good old Cavision French flag with this matte box.

[120 mm Clamp] Here is a real matte box. The right size and weight for small modern cameras. There are, to be fair, a couple of small annoyances, but they are easily overcome with some minor engineering. Considering that no two camera systems are identical, Cavision has done a great job. Two filter slots are enough (one rotates), the flags are fine and work well. Donuts would be good, but can be made; the nun's knickers are OK for most lenses. I had used this on a shoot, loved it, bought one...and will by another...

[120 mm Clamp] I use it on a Canon 24 to 70mm zoom lens, mounted on a slider with a sony a7s II. you can either attach it to a rail system or as a clamp-on to the lens. If you are going to use it in a portable setup I would only recommend using it with a rail system, the clamp on is good if you are not moving around much.
