Based on BirdDog's custom NDI silicon chip, the BirdDog 4K HDMI 2.0 NDI Encoder Decodersupports up to UHD 4K/60 video input for distribution on NDI networks in full-bandwidth I-frame compression. The compact device is housed in an aircraft-grade aluminium case and features an HDMI 2.0 input and HDMI 2.0 and 12G-SDI individual outputs. It also has a built-in cross converter that allows the HDMI input to be looped out via the 12G-SDI output.

Another major feature is an SFP+ expansion slot that supports SFP+ modules for fiber connectivity and Ethernet protocols from 1-10GbE. A tally system with a large bicolor tally light is built-in for indicating which camera is live to on-air talent. The tally system allows user-selectable tally borders on loop out. The device is complete with 3.5mm audio input/output, a 4-line OLED display, and USB 3.0 interface. It can be powered by a standard power supply or over PoE+.

The 4K HDMI 2.0 NDI Encoder/Decoder comes with the BirdDog Comms Lite audio intercom software, which supports up to four BirdDog devices. Comms Lite is Windows compatible and offers features such as director push to talk, mute camera operator, auto-detect NDI sources, monitor camera audio, and shortcut to web console. For a more complete version of the application, an optional upgrade is available to Comms Pro. The Encoder/Decoder is also compatible with the optional BirdDog Central software, which helps you decode NDI back to HDMI or SDI.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. This unit will decode NDI|HX Cameras, like the PTZOptics 30X-NDI Broadcast Camera?

A: No it will not. It will only decode Full NDI video signals.

Q: 2. Will BirdDog 4K 12G-SDI NDI Encoder/Decoder Silicon 2 update add NDi-HX encoding decoding?

A: Yes, the 4K encoder/decoder line will all get the options of full NDI, NDI HX, SRT, and RTMP for the Ethernet jack.

Q: 3. Can someone confirm that it also takes a NDI signal and outputs to HDMI?

A: Yes it does. This product both encodes and decodes NDI from HDMI. You will be able to Decode and NDI signal and output it through HDMI with this product.

Q: 4. Will this interfere with any PTZ control if plugged into the same router? ie. to control & video with 1 Ethernet.

A: No, the BirdDog 4K Quad NDI Encoder/Decoder should not impact other cameras connected to your router as far as control.

Q: 5. The 12G-SDI non-QUAD unit has a separate input and output connector. Can it encode one NDI stream to the network while decoding a different NDI stream from the network at the same time?

A: The outputs would be looped-out signals from the input, which supports only one NDI stream. A different NDI stream from the input is not possible.

Q: 6. If connecting the 4k Quad to a Network switcher, will each SDI-Input be seen as independent NDI sources or just 1-combined NDI?

A: When converting from SDI to NDI, the BirdDog 4K Quad NDI Encoder/Decoder will output each SDI input as a separate NDI stream.

Q: 7. Am I able to have 4 1080p59.94 (3G-SDI) video feeds running through this instead of 4k?

A: Yes, the unit supports up to 4K, as follows: SDI: UHD 4K: 23.98/25/29.97/30/50/59.94/60 fps 1080p: 23.98/25/29.97/30/50/59.94/60 fps 1080i: 50/59.94 fps 720p: 50/59.94/60 fps HDMI UHD 4K: 23.98/25/29.97/30/50/59.94/60 fps 1080p: 23.98/25/29.97/30/50/59.94/60 fps 1080i: 50/59.94 fps 720p: 50/59.94/60 fps

Q: 8. how much latency from UHD 4K 60fps HDMI input to NDI stream?

A: unfortunately the manufacturer does not provide specific latency numbers for this device

Q: 9. Can I use this to decode four P400 cameras from NDI to SDI ? Will it then output each camera on its own SDI out?

A: Yes, this can be accomplished while also using their central pro software: https://bird-dog.tv/centralpro-overview/

Q: 10. does this support 1920x1200?

A: The BirdDog Mini HDMI to NDI Encoder/Decoder (B&H# BIBDMINIHDMI) supports up to 1080p 59.94fps, which sometimes is called 1080/60p. That's 1920 x 1080. It will not support 1920 x 1200 and does not feature a scaler to downres to that resolution. But you could add a device to change the resolution (or perhaps just use a lower resolution output from your video source) and still use it.

[1.96 lb] I'm using this to distribute a live feed internally over our network and it just works. We have a small budget so being able to distribute NDI to TVs over our existing network for $150 an endpoint is great. I'm sure the $5-600 NDI converters have more features but all we needed was to display a video feed for people in other rooms and this does it without complication.

[Device: 16 W] I purchased to provide the ability to watch our church service in the nursery in a separate building live.

This product with the encoder was perfect. It was easy to setup \ configure. It just works and the quality of the Picture is great.
We were using a different encoder and decoder which was hard to setup and configure and consistently lost the connections on out network. So we are glad to find this.

[1x USB-A PoE] I heard that they were small, but I wasn't prepared for just how tiny it is. I am starting to incorporate NDI, as I expand the capabilities of portable live streaming rig.

It was a little slow to configure, but now should be good to go.

I choose this encoder, because of the flexibility of the form factor... I can had additional camera mods easily.

[1x HDMI (2.0)] Birddog is it. They are the real deal and have been on the cutting edge of NDI, riding right along with Newtek, these guys have it down. If you want all in one solid integrated package of configurable devices with support to back it up ... go with Birddog all the way. The Flex family of encoders and decoders are a mainstay in our studio to put out reliable 4K NDI signals without fail.
- Just My 2 cents!

[7 x 5.3 x 4"] This unit has got to be one of the best values out there with NDI. It's been a compact little problem solver for us in a couple of places now. Plus, it's inexpensive enough to buy one for the shelf for those just in case moments
Sure, it's not PERFECT, but it's an easy-to-use product still in development, so you know it's going to keep getting better!

[1x USB-A PoE] Normally don’t write reviews but very impressed so far with the quality and reliability of these NDI devices. I purchased 4 to pair with 4 FX30’s. It’s been about 3 weeks now and they’re running 24/7 off PoE. No issues at all. Initially thought they didn’t work but turns out the cheap Amazon hdmi cables did not support 4k 30fps. Fixed that with some premium atoms hdmi cable and been super happy since. Not many reviews for these ndi converters but definitely worked well for my application (video production w/ OBS or Wirecast)
