The Vinten FH-155 Robotic Head with StarTracker Systemis a fully functional robotic head that can be easily switched between robotic and manual modes. Suitable for studio or remote work, the head is nearly silent in either robotic or manual mode and supports up to 155 pounds. It features a built-in floor movement tracking system, the StarTracker system, which provides information on the head's position in relation to the floor. It has a cradle to adjust the center of gravity and balance of your camera on the head for best results. The head features accurate and highly repeatable motion control of the camera as well as compatible Canon and Fujinon servo-controlled lenses.

When switched to manual mode, the head features continuously adjustable servo tilt and pan drag to maintain the smooth function when being operated by a human operator. This head includes a pan handle rosette adapter and two telescoping pan handles. The head can tilt a total of 100° (50° down and 50° up), and can pan 359°. The built-in 3-port Ethernet switch simplifies integration with robotic pedestals and IP prompting equipment. Mounting the head on a tripod or pedestal requires an optional mounting adapter.

A manual mode of operation features continuously adjustable servo-controlled drag, offering smooth pan and tilt movement.

The servo-controlled drag system is powerful enough to manage payloads up to 155 pounds. Switching between robotic and manual mode can be done either at the head or controller.

A rosette adapter and two telescoping pan handles are included for use when the head is in manual mode.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can this be controlled by software only? Looking to use an elGato Stream Deck with the "Companion" app from BitFocus (which supports Sony, Panasonic and PTZOptics via Visca)

A: This head can be controlled via visca and if the app/software that you are using will provide standard Visca protocols it should also work on this product

Q: 2. How smooth are the pan and tilt movements? Do they ramp up and down, can they be used "on air"?

A: On page 34 of the user manual, the PTR 10 Remote Head is extremely smooth and is able to pan between 0.2–15° / sec and tilt between 0.1–10° / sec. There are 50 PAN/TILT preset positions and you will be able to adjust the pan and tilt acceleration, speed, and torque. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/lit_files/640738.pdf

Q: 3. Is there a motorized slider this unit is compatible with?

A: Not at this time.

Q: 4. Can you remove the half bowl, to mount this to a flat base?

A: Sorry, no, you are not able to remove the ball base on this video head. There are methods of adapting it however. Please see the following suggestions. The Manfrotto Video Head Bowl Adapter offers no leveling but is rock solid, the ikan Hi-Hat Riser offers some leveling and the Alan Gordon Hi-Hat Support I recommend mounting to a board or other support immediately for it is not stable enough for camera use on it's own. The Plywood Mounting Board would be excellent for this purpose. (The mounting board image below is incorrect.)

Q: 5. Can this head be converted to a flat base?

A: Hi Jeffrey, Thank you for your enquiry. The Vision blue5 head can be converted to a flat base using Vinten's 75 to 100mm bowl adaptor and 100mm bowl to flat base adaptor, part numbers 3330-243 and 3330-16.

Q: 6. Will i be able to turn on a canon C330 mk ii or a C500 with this head?

A: You can use the Canon C100, C300 and probably the C500. Please email us to confirm the C500. prophoto@bhphoto.com.

Q: 7. What are the key differences between this and the FH-145 S2?

A: The S1 has one drag level with settings, The S2 has a total of three levels with settings.

Q: 8. Can this PTZ head zoom following sony camcorders: - Sony HXR-NX5U - Sony HDR-FX1000

A: Yes, Both the SONY HDR-FX1000 and the NX5U support lanc control and would be supported on the Datavideo PTR-10 PTZ head. Page 20 has all the tested cameras listed. https://bit.ly/3BsM76D

Q: 9. Is the tie down (bottom bowl clamp) thread on the blue5 M10, or 3/8 ?

A: We were able to determine it is not 3/8 .

Q: 10. Is this compatible with the Proaim Heavy-Duty Mitchell Base Tripod Legs?

A: Yes. Both the tripod and the Vinten V3996-0001 Vector 950 Head will support the Mitchell flat base mount.

[250 VAC, 3.15 A] Head - Heavy, sturdy, smooth, professional quality. No whip-back on pans. Reliable partner in shooting where you have no attention on the tripod because you know it will always perform for you. Trustworthy. Variable pan and tilt drag by wheels, easy to find by touch and can be effortlessly adjusted while shooting. No clicks or steps on drag controls, infinitely variable in the slightest increments. Blue LED on level bubble, auto turns off in 20 sec. Runs on miniature 12 v battery. Looks cool. Functions perfectly. Exquisite manufacturing, beautiful design. Legs - Pozilock locks are very tight and positive. A little stiff now, but that's ok as I think they will loosen up a bit with more use. Very sturdy. Easy to drop legs on set up. Tripod opens up for very low position for ground-level shots. Very sturdy. When camera is in full zoom at 22x, tripod head and legs hold it steady so virtually no movement on image. Using Panny 160A, loaded (with battery, LED, 7 monitor with its battery, shot gun, cables, shoe adapters, articulating arm and wireless receiver.) Holds all steady. Spreader - Mid-level spreader has markings along the top of arms so you can see to what degree each extension is opened to match all three to the same length. Adjustable with locking wheels on each arm. Again, very well constructed, easy to use and adjust. Bag - Bag is beautiful and fits the system well, not too big, not too tight. Two inside pockets. One easily fits pan handle. Smaller pocket holds accessories. Zippers are heavy duty. Large outside clear plastic document sleeve holds paperwork, manual, if you want. (I'm currently not using it.) Love this system. Will be using it for a long time. A keeper.

[IP Ethernet] Fantastic tripod system, I've owned Sachtler 20 & 30's and for the buck this is by far the best deal out there, very smooth head, great design and a fantastic deal from B & H

[IP Ethernet] I love Vinten tripods. Totally reliable and easy to use. The head is super fluid and the feel of it is quality. I own two Vision 3's and the Blue is a great addition!

[250 VAC, 3.15 A] THis tripod is unbelievably smooth. No drag-back, no jerky starts, even at the highest drag setting. If you want smooth pans, to the point of not even being noticed, then this is for you. However lighter camcorders like my Canon XF100 are too light for the balance settings; hopefully this will be addressed by Vinten with a heavier mounting plate or something. Other than that, and being a tad heavy, this tripod is perfect.

[250 VAC, 3.15 A] This tripod is fantastic! It's easy to set up and break down, very sturdy, and most importantly, the head is incredibly smooth. The illuminating bubble leveler is a great addition. The mid-level spreader adds stability but a little tricky to use at first. The only issue I have had is that mine arrived with a crack in the ball mount clamp. This led to it being shattered the first time the head was removed and placed on a crane. I spoke with customer service at Vinten though and they were very easy to deal with and sent a replacement part immediately and I was able to begin using the tripod again quickly. I highly recommend this tripod, but definitely check all the parts to make sure everything is good before getting rid of your old tripod and using this in the field.

[250 VAC, 3.15 A] Once it is dialed in for your camera, it has a solid feel and smooth tilts and pans. I really like the quarter-turn click locks on the tripod legs. Excellent carry bag too.

[IP Ethernet] I work for a video production company that uses the heavier duty Vinten sticks and heads and this thing has all of the bells and whistles of the big guys in a smaller package. Well worth every penny and then some. Super great value and quality.
