The Wine Country Camera Blackstone Hard-Edge IRND 0.6 Filterfrom Wine Country Camera Blackstone Hard-Edge IRND 0.6 Filteris a rectangular filter that helps to darken specific areas of an image, such as bright skies, while allowing for a normal, unaffected exposure in the other regions of the image. The filter is densest at the edge and tapers to clear by the middle, with a hard-edged line of transition between the dense and clear areas. A neutral density filter with a hard-edged line of transition is useful for images which include defined horizon lines. Neutral density filters do not affect the coloration of the image, and this filter provides up to a 2-stop reduction in light from entering the lens.

The design of this filter has been optimized for use with digital sensors and to promote nearly flat attenuation of visible and infrared light. Due to imaging sensors' greater susceptibility to infrared light compared to traditional film, color casts can occur when photographing darker subjects that require increased exposure times. To provide neutrality across the visible and infrared spectrums in order to eliminate color casts and ensure cleaner, truer blacks, one layer of Blackstone ND Coating is applied to each of this filter's surfaces. The Blackstone ND Coating is also designed to help minimize any effect on a digital camera's resolution when using this filter.

This 150 x 170mm Blackstone Hard-Edge Graduated IRND 0.6 Filter is constructed from Schott Ultra-White Glass for clarity as well as color fidelity and measures 2mm thick.

The 150 x 170mm Blackstone Hard-Edge Graduated IRND 0.6 Filter is pre-installed within a Wine Country Camera 150 x 170mm Filter Vault, which is designed to encase the edges of a 150 x 170mm, 2mm thick filter for use within a separately available Wine Country Camera 150mm Filter Holder. By encasing the sides of an installed filter, this filter vault helps to eliminate stray light, which could have unwanted effects on exposure. Additionally, the Wine Country Camera 150 x 170mm Filter Vault reinforces an installed filter's rigidity while preventing its sides from having to come into direct contact with a filter holder's slots. This protects those side surfaces and promotes sharp results by ensuring that the filter remains flat.

Installation of a compatible filter is accomplished by first turning the Wine Country Camera 150 x 170mm Filter Vault's brass Wine Coin lock into the open position. Located along the front of the filter vault's inner and outer top edges, the Wine Coin is a flat, disk cam lock that features a straight edge on one side and a rounded edge at the other. When the lock's straight edge is aligned with the filter vault's inner edge, a 150 x 170mm, 2mm thick filter can be set within the front of the filter vault. The Wine Coin can then be turned so that its rounded edge obstructs the installed filter, securing it within the filter vault.

A separately available Wine Country Camera 150mm Filter Holder includes an outer slot that can accommodate this 150 x 170mm Filter Vault. The filter holder also features a quick release button that is dedicated to the slot. When pressed, it allows a Wine Country Camera 150 x 170mm Filter Vault within a Wine Country Camera 150mm Filter Holder's outer slot to be adjusted upward or downward relative to the subject. When used with a Wine Country Camera 150mm Filter Holder's outer slot, an integrated safety-catch system prevents this 150 x 170mm Filter Vault from accidentally sliding out of the filter holder.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. willit work with nikon d3300?

A: Yes, this will mount on a D3300. Due to the camera's APS-C sensor, this lens will have an equivalent focal length of 22.5mm.

Q: 2. Can anyone tell me how to read/use the hyperfocal scale on this lens? I know what hyperfocal focus is and on most other lenses I know how to use it, but the scale on this lens is truly perplexing to me - specifically, why are there multiple aperture values on both the left and right sides of the centre mark? And there's also another hyperfocal marker above the distances as you approach the infinity mark. So far I've only been able to test it visually by taking the same photo at different focus values and comparing them on my computer to see which are the most in-focus. This is by no means a very technical approach to achieving the proper focus, so I'm very interested in learning how to properly use the hyperfocal scale on this lens. Thanks in advance for any information anyone can provide!

A: The aperture scales on the left and right of the focus mark indicate the approximate distances from the focal plane of the camera within which the image will be acceptable sharp at the current focus setting. It's referred to as a depth of field scale. The hyperfocal scale allows you to set your focus to the approximate hyperfocal distance for your current aperture, by aligning the f/number on the scale with the center focus mark. Irix has a good article on their site explaining DoF, hyperfocal distance and how to use both scales.

Q: 3. Will this be able to be mount on a canon mirrorless full frame with the adaptor?

A: Yes this would be able to mount on a Canon Mirrorless Full Frame camera with the EF-RF adapter.

Q: 4. How is the iris controlled on a Nikon F-mount camera? Is there a 'G' style control lever? Or is it purely electronically controlled?

A: The aperture is electronically controlled.

Q: 5. Does the Blackstone Line of lenses matches with the Dragonfly line of lenses in color and contrast like the IRIX Cinema?

A: The IRIX 15mm f/2.4 Blackstone Lens for Canon EF optically is the same as the Firefly version. The difference is in the housing. The Blackstone housing is stronger and made of magnesium and aluminum.

Q: 6. Can the aperture of this lens be controlled by the BlackMagic Pocket Cinema 6K camera?

A: Although the Black Magic Pocket Cinema 6K Camera with a Canon EF can accept this lens, it has not been tested to our knowledge. Your results may vary.

Q: 7. Which square filter holder would work for this lens?

A: There are several options but I would recommend this Format kit: https://bhpho.to/3qYQvBH

Q: 8. (Please ignore or delete my previous question about the difference between the FireFly and Blackstone iterations of this lens -- it is answered in the Overview -Duh! - My bad.) Are the FireFly and Blackstone editions identical in terms of image quality? Thank you!

A: yes Mark the firefly and the blackstone are identical in image quality. The only difference is between them is that the blackstone is fully weather sealed.

Q: 9. Will this work with Nikon z6 with ftz adapter?

A: A Nikon Z camera with an FTZ adapter is in effect the same as a Nikon F camera. Therefore, if a lens works on an F camera, it will work on a Z camera.

Q: 10. Is there an 150mm filter holder for this lens

A: Not that I know of that we sell, there may be some coming soon from Nisi, Lee, Fotodiox, etc..

Outstanding product, highly recommended. 100x150mm filter vaults fit too tightly in the provided case however. I high recommend purchasing the Kinesis F169 filter case instead.

I used variable density filters, but color cast and the X when changed to high density turn me to go to solid filter. The good reviews of Wine Country Camera filters sent to me to take this option. I tried a few photos with this filter and color cast zero as you can see in the photo of Miami Beach attached. I bought also the 6 stop filter and same result.

Although I have used circular filters for years, a recent move into long exposure photography prompted me to explore the world of externally mounted filters. There appears to be a number of new additions to the filter market in the last few years, all claiming to have designed a more robust and adjustable filter holder with zero colour cast filters and some with a super nano coating to help keep your filter clean. However, many of these filter makers products do not live up to their manufacturer's claim, especially concerning colour cast as has been reviewed on a number of sites. Wine Country Cameras filter holder and lenses seemed to be the leading contender for producing not only an excellent holder but zero colour cast filters with a true nano coating. This three stop graduated filter is a stunner, I can't wait to get their filter holder with some ND filters and though not cheap, you pay a premium price to get a premium product.

I normally used variable density filter, but color cast issues, and the X at high density in the photos turn me to change to another type of filter. I saw some review of Wine Country Camera filters and I wanted to try them. Really no color cast and very clean image

A wonderful, if a little pricy solution to the filter problem.

Like all things, you get what you pay for. This gem is worth the price. With a couple of graduated filter sets and mounting frames for various lenses it's not small. It is sturdy, very well thought out and a pleasure to use.
