Distinguished by enhanced processing and improved imaging capabilities, the Pentax K-1 Mark II DSLR Camera with Battery Gripfrom Pentax K-1 Mark II DSLR Camera with Battery Gripis the follow-up to their first full-frame flagship DSLR. Revolving around a 36.4MP CMOS sensor and PRIME IV image processor, the camera is capable of producing high-resolution stills at up to 4.4 fps along with recording Full HD video. The 14-bit image processor has been updated with a Ricoh-developed Accelerator Unit, which helps to reduce noise and increase clarity and color accuracy, as well as boost the sensitivity range up to ISO 819200 for working in low-light conditions. Also contributing to improved image quality is the 5-axis Shake Reduction system, which minimizes the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting. This image stabilization system also enables Pixel Shift Resolution II, which leverages the movement of the sensor to record four sequential frames and merge them together in order to acquire greater color detail and resolution. Dynamic Pixel Shift Resolution also benefits from this technology, however lets you achieve similar results even when working handheld.

In addition to its distinct imaging assets, the K-1 Mark II is also characterized by its unique physical design. A stainless steel and magnesium-alloy body is especially robust and extensive weather-sealing makes this camera suitable for use in harsh climates and cold weather. The large pentaprism optical viewfinder affords 100% frame coverage and a high 0.7x magnification, and the rear 3.2" 1.04m-dot LCD sports a unique Cross-Tilt design for easy positioning to work at a variety of angles. Additionally, built-in Wi-Fi is available for wireless remote control and image transfer and built-in GPS permits geotagging your imagery for tracking your shots on an interactive map.

The K-1 Mark II delivers high-quality imagery using an advanced 36.4MP CMOS sensor that is designed to create detailed images with minimal noise. Guaranteeing maximum resolution, the sensor lacks an anti-aliasing, or optical low-pass, filter though this will cause a higher chance of aliasing and moire. For situations at risk of these artifacts users can leverage an AA Filter Simulator function, which slightly moves the sensor in order to mimic the effects of a physical filter.

Working in concert with the image sensor is an updated 14-bit PRIME IV processing engine, which makes use of a Ricoh-developed Accelerator Unit to effectively suppress noise and reproduce fine details with high accuracy, even with high sensitivity values. This image processor and Accelerator Unit also contribute to a notable boost in sensitivity, with a top setting of ISO 819200 available, along with quick 4.4 fps continuous shooting, Full HD 1080p video recording, and a variety of other processing-intensive tasks, such as Pixel Shift Resolution and AstroTracer.

A staple of Pentax DSLRs, the K-1 Mark II is equipped with a 5-axis Shake Reduction system that can counter the effects of camera shake by up to 5 stops. This system has been optimized for the full-frame sensor and can account for yaw, pitch, and roll as well as vertical and horizontal motion of the camera. Also, due to the stabilization being incorporated into the camera body, it functions with every K-mount lens.

Pentax takes advantage of the sensor's available movement in order to develop additional features, such as the updated Pixel Shift Resolution II setting. This mode shifts the sensor in order to capture full color data on each pixel by compositing four shots. This grants exceptional clarity, lowers noise, and boosts the effective resolution to 42MP. Additionally, the K-1 Mark II also has Dynamic Pixel Shift Resolution, which allows this function to be used even when shooting handheld.

Another capability is an Image Composition Assist function, which allows you to shift the sensor up/down and left/right as well as slightly rotate it. This lets users easily adjust their composition without needing to move their camera and can be useful for delicately balanced tripod work.

The SAFOX 12 AF system is optimized for the full-frame image sensor and has a total of 33 AF points, of which 25 are cross-type, and three f/2.8 luminance sensors to maximize performance in all lighting conditions. The system can operate down to -3 EV using the 25 center sensors and will benefit working in dark scenes as well as extreme back-lit conditions.

In addition to standard stills capture, the K-1 Mark II is capable of Full HD video at up to 30p or 60i using H.264 compression. This enables photographers to add high-resolution motion capture to their arsenal without needing to carry another camera. Also, when shooting in HD 720p, users can shoot at up to 60p. Additionally, the camera is NTSC/PAL switchable and it is equipped with headphone and microphone jacks for high-quality audio support.

Durability has always been one of Pentax's strong suits, and the K-1 Mark II is no exception with a stainless-steel chassis covered in a magnesium-alloy shell that is tough and lightweight. Also, the camera is sealed in 87 places to ensure no rain or dust will take your camera out of commission. The camera is designed to handle freezing temperatures as well, with a rating down to 14°F.

The K-1 Mark II is equipped with two SDXC card slots. These can be configured for backup, splitting storage of JPEGs and raw files, or overflow when card 1 is filled. Also on the body users will find a variety of dials and buttons that will allow for quick and intuitive adjustment of settings. Along with this there are LED-illuminated body points on the lens mount, card slots, the backside of the LCD, and at the cable switch terminal that will help you operate the camera in low light.

One unique feature of the K-1 Mark II's design is the use of a 3.2" 1.04m-dot Cross-Tilt LCD. This ensures the screen remains aligned with the optical center of the camera while allowing for tilt 44° down and 90° upward as well as 35° left and right. The camera also has settings for quickly adjusting the brightness of the display to account for a variety of shooting environments.

With built-in GPS, shooters can automatically track their movement and position as they work with data automatically written to the image file. It can record location, facing direction, and Coordinated Universal Time while also enabling using a digital compass feature. Along with this, it can work with the Shake Reduction mechanism to activate the AstroTracer function. This system obtains location data and camera position to calculate movement of stars in the sky. The sensor is then synced with the movement in order to minimize the capture of star trails with long exposures.

  • Real-time Scene Analysis system has been upgraded to look at exposure, color, faces, movement, and more in order to automatically select the proper exposure settings for optimal image capture.

  • Built-in Wi-Fi connectivity allows users to directly connect to the camera using a mobile device for image transfer and remote camera control.

  • Record images in DNG raw, Pentax raw, or JPEG with selectable quality and resolutions.

  • APS-C crop mode will allow full compatibility with existing APS-C format lenses.

  • Aperture and shutter speed priority mode (TAv) allows you to manually select aperture and shutter speed while leaving ISO selection to the camera.

  • Optional adapter enables users to mount 645 series medium-format lenses to the K-1.

  • Diffraction Correction function will account for diffraction at small apertures and improve image sharpness.

  • Focus peaking in video mode will assist with manual focusing.

  • Language support: English, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Dutch, Danish, Swedish, Finnish, Polish, Czech, Hungarian, Turkish, Greek, Russian, Korean, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, and Japanese.

[Stills & Video] Yes it's sharper than a Bayer color sensor. Yes it's high ISO noise is much much better. But the only reason for its being is the tones are accurate and what they should be. It's the difference between REAL black and white and a computer simulation of black and white, literally. It's digital black and white film. Worth every penny if you can appreciate what it is.

And Pentax ergonomics are the best in the business. This UI is so good, I never have to go into the Q menu for anything. I wish the playback button was in the same place as the K1 and that Live view was a button like the K1, but those are minor quibbles in a brilliant camera interface. The SLR viewfinder is wonderful after 5 years shooting mostly EVF's. I didn't realize how much better it really is.

[3.2"] To preface this story, this is my first DSLR and my first Pentax.
Before this I had owned two mirrorless cameras.
First I started with a Lumix S1 but was looking to upgrade and convinced myself to sell everything to buy into the Fuji GFX system.
To my (and many others) surprise I was dissatisfied with not only the build quality of the 50sii but the images I was creating with it.
Something just didn't look right. I couldn't place my finger on it but things looked... sterile?
I thought a digital medium format sensor was the answer to replicating my medium format film cameras but alas, this was not the case.
I wanted to capture a black and white film look with a digital camera but couldn't afford a Leica monochrome.
It was a risky move on my part but I sold my GFX after doing a lot of research into the K3iii monochrome.
The first day I took it out I knew I had made the right choice.
Images from this camera are pure magic and have tricked many people around me thinking it was film.
Match this sensor with a M42 adapter and throw some Super-Takumar, it looks identical to B&W film.
Love shooting this thing at night at ridiculously high ISO levels.
The build quality is like a tank. View finder is bright and easy to focus. Speaking of focusing, the auto focus is faster than some of the mirrorless cameras Ive used.
I don't ever want to go back to mirrorless after using this gem, there's nothing like framing your image through the lens.
My only complaint is it takes a second to get used to exposing correctly. You need to be very mindful of blown out highlights.
Images match that of any full frame camera I've ever used.
I love this thing so much I can only hope Pentax will release a full frame monochrome camera in the future to compete with Leica.
Anyway, if you love B&W photography then this is the camera for you.

[1/200 Second] For all of us who cannot spend the money on the Lecia, Pentax gives us a wonderful Monochrome digital camera. Based on the K3 chassis it is a Monochrome only Pentax K-3 Mark iii. It is an APS-C professional-level camera. With excellent ergonomics that Pentax is known for. Yes everyone is dashing off on mirrorless but the bright, eyeglass-friendly viewfinder is wonderful. With a nice catalog of lenses, this is a black-and-white camera that can be used in any situation. Finally black and white with excellent fine resolution, usable high ISO, and professional grade. The images have fine detail, highlights, and shadows. Easy-to-use menus and settings that address every situation you may encounter. For those who remember all those color filters for black and white are usable to manipulate the the images before tripping the shutter button.
Two things to consider. LCD panel does not flip up or rotate. I use a Ref a right angle viewfinder by Pentax. It works well on all the 35mm Pentax cameras and some other brands. It rotates and has a 2x setting which is nice for macro. The other thing I have noticed is the very sensitive shutter button. It has a very sensitive and short motion to trip the shutter.
I can highly recommend this camera to anyone who wants to do Monochrome. You will not be disappointed
Monochrome is far from a niche place in photography. You see it in many venues. It is not limited now to the conversion of color digital or shooting film. We now have a well thought out Monochrome from Pentax at a more palatable price than Lecia.

[-3 to +18 EV] Amazing camera! Same classic Mark III feel, and just heavy enough to make you imagine you're a pro when you hold it, point and shoot. Yet, the image contrast, sharpness, and shades make this camera irreplaceable when compared to similar B&W shots taken by a color camera. Definitely recommend to a friend.
Thank you B&H Photo Video for having this baby in stock, and making my purchase experience a breeze, the shipment arrived in no time.

[GPS, QZSS] I love where this camera takes me. Beautiful results straight from the camera carries me back to the 70's when I shot Tri-X almost exclusively.

[PC Terminal] I am very happy that I had decided to get my hand on this camera. Being an ardent lover of B&W, this camera brings the best results concerning B&W than any other color camera I have used and then removing the colors in Photoshop. There is absolutely (IMHO) no possible comparison, if you really know how to work in B&W. I wish I could upload here some of the photographs I have made using the Pentax K3 Mark III Monochrome.

[TTL] I posted the most-recent review of this camera, where I tried it and loved it, but fretted over its autofocus performance--so returned it.

That was a mistake. The black-and-white quality from this camera brought it back to me. There's just simply no way to easily replicate the results by editing color. I've spent lots of time trying to do this. In some scenarios, I get close, but at the expense of much effort.  If you shoot lots of black and white, you will not be disappointed with this camera.

And since I've had more time with the camera--and have used a wider variety of lenses with it--I've learned that the autofocus is better than my initial impression, snappy-fast on some lenses, in fact. If mirrorless AF is considered a 10, I'd give this an 8.

[Pentax K] I have had vertical grips for all of my previous Pentax DSLRs and recently purchased this for my K1. The extra controls make vertical shots easier and the grip fits my hand well. The extra battery life is useful also.

[1/200 Second] I got this grip to extend my battery life while I recorded a concert for some friends and it worked a treat. I was a bit nervous as I watched the battery meter go from green to yellow to red, but it automagically switched over to the second battery without any problems or loss of power. The grip has some great features, like the second set of buttons for shooting in portrait orientation, and the places to store the pin cap and rubber door on it so you don't lose them. Additionally, being able to use either a second rechargeable battery or 6 AA batteries in the grip make this a very versatile option. The only downside I found was that 6 Duracell Procell alkaline batteries were not strong enough to power the camera, I had to use lithium batteries instead.
