The Steven Slate Audio RAVEN MTZ 43" Multitouch Control Screenmarries the tactile control of yesterday’s mixing consoles with the convenience of today’s touchscreen technology. With the RAVEN MTZ, nevermore do you have to rely on your mouse for controlling your DAW. Instead, the RAVEN MTZ provides a tablet-like control surface that can raise and lower faders, facilitate touch-control over plug-ins, operate all the buttons of a traditional transport, and more.

The MTZ represents the current iteration of RAVEN technology, putting it all in a 1.5" deep, low-profile, no-bezel 43" screen that supports multitouch, gestural control. The screen sits on an included stand that is angle adjustable. With the MTZ, you can control many faders at once, manipulate pans and sends, and set up recording sessions quickly and efficiently.

Common functions can be accessed and performed expediently through the customizable toolbar and Batch Commander, which can execute an entire series of key commands, mouse clicks, and menu selections via the press of one virtual button. Hundreds of presets are included for most major DAWs, and you can program custom commands housing up to 1000 functions per command.

The RAVEN MTZ interfaces with most DAWs, and a DAW support license is included for the compatible DAW of your choice. Connections can be made to your Mac- or Windows-equipped computer by means of an HDMI video cable and a USB 2.0 connection. An iLok version 2 or 3 dongle (available separately) is required for operating the RAVEN.

FADERS 3.0 provides multitouch virtual faders that allow precise control of your DAW's faders. By integrating multitouch 100mm virtual faders directly into each DAW, you now have control over mix levels and automation for more than one track at a time. FADERS 3.0 offers a naturalistic control over your faders that is both comfortable and fun to use. A FINE FADER mode is on hand, which can quadruple the resolution of the faders to facilitate especially miniscule moves.

RAVEN 3.6 Control software now carries a technology called GESTURES, which facilitates classic multitouch gestures to control important elements of your DAW. Opening and closing plug-ins, muting and unmuting tracks, zooming in and out-all of this and more can be accomplished with familiar gestures.

In Toolbar mode, your DAW controls are more accessible, laid out right in front of you. You'll notice Transport, an Edit/Mix window selector, and convenient tools for tracking such as Record Looping, Click, Create Group, and Undo. Use intuitive multitouch gestures on the RAVEN NAVPAD to perform Scrub/Shuttle, Waveform Zoom, Track Zoom, Track Banking, and RAVEN Batch Commands. Because the RAVEN Toolbar is virtual, it's user-customizable, so you can put the controls where you want them.

The Batch Command System is a series of preset and customizable buttons that can execute up to 1000 key commands and mouse clicks automatically. With just one button, the Batch Command System allows you to create instant headphone sends, to name tracks, to put entire drum tracks on the grid, to export stems, and more. The Batch Command System comes pre-programmed with 100 preset batch commands in every supported DAW, with layouts for Music, Mastering, Post Production and more. Record your own mouse click automation or program user commands with QUICKLIST, which features hundreds of predefined DAW operations. Just touch and hold on a Batch Command button to edit, and you'll have access to almost limitless possibilities.

Slate Remote expands your workflow to your iOS-compatible. Slate Remote is a free app for iOS users and available at the app store to anyone with a RAVEN. Slate Remote automatically synchronizes with your RAVEN session via Wi-Fi and gives you access to your custom Batch Commands, allowing it to remotely perform time-saving tasks for you from the palm of your hand.

[Black] These babies make it easy to mix with relative accuracy while on the road. The settings work as advertised, and provide a great deal of sonic information about how your mix would fare in similar live environments. Of particular help to me was the Club setting, and the ability to toggle between moderate club interiors, and those with heavy bass. I like that Slate makes it easy to purchase the Pro kit software upgrade if you want all the settings available, but the Essentials gives you experiential simulations for EarPods, car, club, and pro studio environments, plus a flat mix setting to acclimate to between environments. To me that setting's like a palate cleanser at a wine tasting—it clears your ears so you can hear new simulated environments without rogue frequencies. My great caution is to READ THE INSTRUCTIONS first and take time to acclimate to the headphones by critically listening to a variety of familiar tracks in various environments. I chose a wide range of genres over 10 tracks to experiment with, and I'm glad I did. Great product!

[1x HDMI Input ] I've been using them for well over a month, at this point, and I can confidently say that they are very much worth every penny.
My favorite room/speaker combination for mixing is the NRG Studios with the midfield speakers.
My second favorite is Archon Studios (again on midfield).
The SUV is really good for a different/troublesome listening environment.
Lastly, the Howie Weinberg Mastering Room is really good for finding honky frequencies, particularly in dialog.
My first music mix was greeted by my bandmates with the first comment that they could hear the bass better than any of our previous demo mixes.
For the cost of the headphones at the highest level, you can't even come close to competing with buying pro-sumer monitors and acoustic treatment.
I'll take it a step further and point out that, if you're like us and can't really afford a studio space that's completely sound treated, or you have multiple machines running in your room (NAS, servers, hard drives, etc.) the amount of money you would spend to accomodate all of that and get an excellent listening environment is going to be a 5-figure investment, easily, if not more. For a few hundred $$$ the headphones will get you everything you need, plus the amazing portability of being able to mix anywhere you can take your laptop and interface.
The Slate VSX Headphones are certainly a game changer that can benefit anyone in the audio realm.

[10 to 90%] I recently splurged on the Slate VSX headphones and, honestly, they're pretty awesome. The coolest part? They've got this tech that mimics different studio environments. It's like being in an acoustic wonderland, right from my own desk. I'm into music production, and these headphones have totally changed how I mix and master my tracks. And the sound - it's just wow. Crisp, clear, and balanced. The bass has just the right amount of kick, and I can hear every little detail in the mids and highs. It's not just great for work; even when I'm kicking back with some tunes, the experience is top-notch.

But let's get real - they're not perfect. Setting them up was a bit of a headache. There's software, calibration... it's a bit much at first. And the whole studio-simulating thing, as cool as it is, might not be everyone's cup of tea. It took me a bit to really get the hang of it. On the plus side, they're super comfy - a big deal for someone like me who's glued to them for hours. They're light, the ear pads feel like clouds, and they seem sturdy enough to handle my not-so-gentle care. So, are they worth it? For someone serious about their audio game, absolutely. They're not just headphones; they're like a mini, portable studio.
