The 16-channel Trident Audio 88C-16 Analog Recording Console 16-Channelfrom Trident Audio 88C-16 Analog Recording Console 16-Channelis a classically styled, in-line, eight-bus analog console that is artfully constructed for ease of use and workhorse reliability for recording applications. It is designed to fit the modern, high-end facility—whether private, institutional, or professional.

Along with the familiar routing and feel of a classic Trident desk, are the modern refinements that serve to improve functionality, workflow, and performance specifications. For example, integration with outboard processors and mic pre's like the 500 format, is provided by means of a switchable input. This bypasses the channel preamp circuitry and allows for insertion of external signal sources directly to the channel equalizer.

The Trident's equalization is plentiful. It is available on the channel, monitor, effects returns, and group sections. Other features include: options for VU metering, transformer I/O, automation, short loading, and channel configurations exceeding 40 inputs. In addition, features found throughout the 88 console makes for a straightforward and powerful sound. With many styles, preferences, and methods of recording, this board can be pushed hard.

With 27 dB of headroom, the 88 console is built to be pushed hard and to sound huge. This is a feature found in the series 80 consoles and the 88 carries that tradition forward. Finally, the 88C-16 Series 88 Analog Recording Console with Meter Bridge was created with all of this in mind, so that you can use it to make great sounding tracks.

The Trident 88 is built from the ground up to be a rugged and reliable console, easy to build, and equally easy to maintain. The 88 is designed so that the entire console can be serviced with a single screw driver. Motherboards are shock-mounted with rubber standoffs to isolate them from the chassis and provide additional protection from structure born stresses. A channel can be swapped in a matter of minutes and the console will continue to function if one or more channels are removed.

  • Faders, channels, groups, and master section are individually removable
  • All rear connections are also removable

Having a split/inline console doubles the inputs to your stereo bus. This is a common configuration for recording consoles in today’s market. This console added an EQ to the monitor path that can also be swapped with the main channel EQ.

  • Dual inputs to the channels—line and monitor
  • Four-band, sweepable channel EQ, is switchable with monitor tilt EQ
  • Dual inserts to each channel at the preamp or at the main channel EQ
  • 8 auxes: 6 mono and 2 stereo
  • 27 dB of headroom

Incorporating a discrete Class-A preamp to the 88 gives the console a higher quality stock preamp from the start and also incorporates the option to add a Lundahl input transformer to any channel desired.

  • Discrete Class A
  • 65 dB gain
  • Balanced inputs, with optional Lundahl transformers
  • Full bypass insert
  • Input reverse switch
  • Mic/line switch
  • Phantom power switch

Taking the highly regarded 80B EQ from the 80 Series console and improving on it with the 80C EQ gives you more control. Adding more EQ offers a more versatile analog recording console progression. Having EQ on the vast majority of the inputs on the 88 console means more analog controls at your fingers.

  • High and low shelving
  • Low/high mid peaking
  • 4 sweepable bands boost/cut to +/-15 dB.
  • 50 Hz high pass filter
  • Insert pre/post EQ
  • Monitor in: Tilt EQ
  • Group FX returns: 12 kHz and 80 Hz shelving
  • Group monitor returns: 12 kHz and 80 Hz shelving

Keeping control of your workflow with ease and speed is the core function of an analog recording console. Your time spent setting up a mix and the ability to have tactile control with immediate effect over your work is essential and time saving.

The 88 console is designed to give you maximum control and routing options at your fingertips. This can make your creative process more effective and save you time in the process.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. why do you recommend this particular mixer?

A: The question would be better posed as why would you recommend this particular mixer ? This is a desk made for live work and is well suited for the job. With 32 in's and 8 sends these can be especially useful when dealing with multiple cue mixes and several EFX sends. Most of the dynamic parts of the desk such as the one knob compressor and auto ducking, will save you a lot of set up time which is very valuable in a live situation. There is a Stereo Image function that will help narrow the stereo spread which can be useful for live work. Along with both a standard type (Comp) and a 3-band divided (Multi-band) compressor across the 2 mix output bus. I would recommend this desk for the numerous options it has along with a very straight ahead design.

Q: 2. We are using both the XLR output to speaker, how to get stereo output to a live camera streaming in addition to the XLR speaker output?

A: The console has an Alternate Output (ALT OUT) which can be used to send stereo signals from the console to outboard devices or speakers.

Q: 3. How can we control effects level on aux 1 to 4 when assigning Aux 5 & 6 to external effects?

A: For technical support questions please contact a Representative here at 800-606-6969 for assistance. You may also send your inquiry to audio@a href= http://bandh.com target= _blank bandh.com./a

Q: 4. I would need to Connect 3 Avid 16x16 I/O, is this possible?

A: No you can only connect two 16 in 16 out. The desk is 32.

Q: 5. I recently purchased the A&H WZ4 16:2 which replaced the Mackie CR1604-VLZ 16-Channel mixer. I am finding that I have to push the Gain up really high to gain stage my mics. This is the case for all my mics (Shure SM58, Audio Technica system 9 Lav, etc.). Is this typical for this mixer or am I doing something wrong? I am getting noise and distortions in my live mix.

A: Hi Kenneth, I wouldn't say that's typical. Do you maybe have the attenuation pad accidentally engaged on your mic channels? If you continue to have issues, please reach out to our support: https://www.allen-heath.com/support/

Q: 6. Does this have DAW control from the USB?

A: You can archive performances with the record function that allows direct recording to a conventional USB storage device, but this mixer does not offer DAW control through USB.

Q: 7. Where I can find it made from USA or Japan?

A: The Yamaha MGP24X is manufactured in INDONESIA.

Q: 8. Does this have monitor outputs as well as main outs?

A: No the Allen & Heath ZED16FX does not have monitor outputs.

Q: 9. Can I record each of the pre-amp channels individually while playing a live show in Sonar Software LE? Cheers

A: the USB output on the ZED 16FX is only able to output 2 channels simultaneously. Main Mix (Post-fade), the Main Mix (Pre-Fade), Auxes 1-2, or Auxes 3-4. Unfortunately there are no individual outputs available on this unit.

Q: 10. Will this fit mounted in the Odyssey FZ1316WDLX?

[16] Nice clean signal coming from my Beta 58. Easy to setup for computer interface.

Bluetooth is easy to connect and works great. Only minor niggle for that is if you want to switch devices, you have to pair the new one every time. It only remembers the current device. Don't let that deter you though, the pairing only takes a few seconds so it's not really a problem, and if you only use one device for Bluetooth, it is a non-issue.

Calling up the FX options takes a little getting used to, and though it has virtual presets available, it might be nice if there were a couple of physical preset buttons you could program.

The line in jacks 3/4 share an interface with the USB 3/4 return from the computer, so you are unable to use them if you (for example) want to monitor your Zoom call through the mixer. If it's important to you to have both, I suggest you upgrade to the 10 channel version.

Bottom line, it's a great little mixer which doesn't take up a huge amount of real estate on your desk.

[16] I had the opportunity to operate multiple audio mixers. I recommend this mixer because it has the characteristics of a larger console with the ability to transport rack for small events. It has 6 aux sends (outputs 1 - 4 with xlr connectors), phantom power, phase inverter and HPF per channel, EQ like a large GB8 soundcraft mixers. Apart from the L-R has a mono output. Great Sound!

[16] I have used this for documentary work for 2 years. It has been with me to in the studio and brought along to interviews in a shoulder bag approximately 50 times.

What I dislike is the weight. It's heavy when I go one-person-band recording. I worry (and expect) every time that I will have a tube issue or some problem associated with having moved the unit out of my rack kit for setup elsewhere. Cross my fingers that it's never given me trouble or had malfunctions.

The manual was easy to read and follow. This is one of the best differentiators in terms of quality in my kit and has attracted talent because the sound is leaps and bounds above client expectations. I like that I have everything in one spot for a subject of any range (quiet and shy, loud and booming) with total confidence that I can get an archive-quality recording.

I have recorded into various pro recorders and ENG or compact cine cameras with it. In the future, the size and tube-only operation has led me to explore other options such as Twinfinity and Grace preamps.

I will second another reviewer that Universal Audio's changes seem to depart from the tradition of this old company. I have the whole thunderbolt-powered Universal Audio Apollo 8p racks at the home studio. They are not reliable like this unit, for me. It seems like the software-based mic pres always have some annoying issue or update. I have not taken this in for a warranty, given that it's worked without trouble.

[16] Built well, decent preamps, decent routing options. Works great with Cubase. I got it when it was on sale for 618- can't beat it at that price.
