Q: 1. Will this also cut a straight edge? Like a regular paper cutter or is this only for mats? I'm looking for something that could pull double duty as something that will also trim my large images instead of putchasing a separate paper cutter + mat cutter.Thanks!

A: This may cutter, like Logan's other mat cutters, does come with both a straight cutter (intended for mats or foam core) and a bevel cutter (intended for cutting bevels on mats). It may be impracticable, though, to use the straight cutter for cutting a substrate much thinner than mat or foam, as the cutting board has a groove in which the blade of the straight cutter rides. For a thick substrate like foam or matboard (2- or 4-ply) that is rigid on its own there is no risk of an inconsistent cut due to material bending down into that groove, but with a thinner material that might be a risk. The thinnest material I've cut on my Logan mat cutter was linen (trimming the linen on a linen-backed piece of art), which worked fine, but for anything thinner for which you want absolutely precise cuts you might be better off with a good straightedge (the Logan Adapt-A-Rule is excellent -- I have the 40-inch model) and a sharp knife on a cutting surface without such a groove as this has. That said, for mats and foam I wouldn't use anything other than this device; it's really quite excellent.

Q: 5. Will this cut gatorboard?

A: I cut foam board with with good results. It works well to keep cots straight and square to the surface of the board. Board needs to be held tightly and I am careful to keep my hand behind the blade in case of a slip. Similar cutting effort to a box cutter but better controlled.

Q: 6. 8 ply mats equal to how many mm or inches ?

A: 8 ply = 10 mm

Q: 7. will it work/ fit on a model 660? earlier model.

A: Check Logan on this but think maybe not. The glass cutter uses a rail slot used on the Team Systems, Compact Series, Artist Elite, and Simplex series mat cutters. The 660 is a Framers series that uses a completely different rail. I have both the 350 Compact and the 450 Artist and works on those.

Q: 8. How well will this work for trimming prints with the straight cutter? Would be nice to use one machine for everything rather than also needing a separate rotary trimmer.

A: The mat cutters are not recommended for paper trimming but if you want to save on cost/space, you could buy a paper trimmer and pre-cut mats.
