Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. What adapter do I need for this headset to work with a Sennheiser G2/G3 body pack?

A: This will not work with an adapter. It is designed only for compatible Audio-Technica body-pack transmitters with 4-Pin CH-Style Hirose connectors. For Sennheiser: Countryman Isomax Omnidirectional Headset Microphone for Sennheiser Wireless Transmitters (1/8" (3.5mm) Locking-Mini Connector, Beige) B&H # COMHOW3LSR

Q: 2. Will this mic work on a DSLR?

A: Yes. I use it with a DSLR as well as a basic consumer level camcorder. Youll need a 3.5mm to 3-Pin XLR Female adapter cable though.

Q: 3. is connector swivel ?

A: The connector is a 3 pin XLR and it does not swivel.

Q: 4. Specs say it needs 48 volts of phantom power. What does phantom power mean and what do I need to connect it to a PC computer?

A: Phantom power refers to the specific voltage a condenser microphone such as the Audio-Technica AT4040 Large-Diaphragm Cardioid Condenser Microphone requires from its XLR input connection for proper use and operation. To use the AT4040 with a PC, a USB audio interface offering phantom power from an XLR input connection is required. The Focusrite Scarlett Solo 2x2 USB Audio Interface (BH #FOSCARSOLO3G) is an example of an interface that could be used in the scenario described: https://bhpho.to/3gmNonm

Q: 5. Is the end of the cable an XLR connector? I have phantom power on my field recorder and don't want to add any power modules.

A: The Audio-Technica AT831B terminates in a TA3 (miniXLR) connector, but the included power module has a regular XLR output.

Q: 6. Do I need a pre-amp to connect it to a laptop?

A: The Audio-Technica Pro 35 Cardioid Condenser Instrument Microphone requires a USB audio interface with XLR inputs for connection to a computer.

Q: 7. is there an xlr m cable included?

A: The Audio-Technica UA851R includes a 25 foot XLR output cable with with TA3F and XLRM-type connectors for connection from the mic to your recording/output device.

Q: 8. What records the sound? The camera or the mic's memory card?

A: This mic has an XLR cable so if your camera has an XLR input then you can record to your camera. The mic doesn't have a memory card. I film with a DSLR so I use a Zoom H4N to pass the mic input to my camera.

Q: 9. Using for interviews.I'm getting a lot of noise from this microphone that I wouldn't expect. Very sensitive to any movement near the microphone like a jacket moving, heavy breaths causes overmodulation. I use the windscreen at all times and that helps some. It's pretty annoying. I've used dozens of mics over the years and have never had this much problems. Am I doing something wrong?Any suggestions? Would a unidirectional mic be better.

A: The Audio-Technica AT831B is a unidirectional microphone, suitable for professional video, broadcast and sound reinforcement applications. The fact that it is a condenser makes it more sensitive than your traditional dynamic hand-held interview mic. In video production, condensers are preferred because of their sensitivity- especially when pristine audio is demanded. In your case, I would try a couple of things before considering a mic change. 1. Engage the low-cut filter. The power switch has three positions: off , flat , and low-cut . The low-cut filter makes the microphone less sensitive to low frequencies found in wind, breath noise, and general ambiance. 2. Consider adding the Rycote Undercover (B&H#RYUC) lavalier wind cover and adhesive mount to your sound bag. The covers help reduce rustling noise caused by cable movement and friction between the mic element and clothing.

Q: 10. Does this microphone have GSM or cell phone interference? I have the AT803b, and I get interference from GSM cell phones near the microphone.

A: I haven't noticed cell interference, but it does have a ton of handling noise. Even the faintest fabric rustle is pretty noticeable.

[Cardioid] I own two headset microphones. I own a wireless Nady UHF headset and a Audio Technica ATM75. The Audio Technica is a lot better durability and reliability. The headset from Audio Technica stays on my head a lot better than the Nady wireless. The Audio Technica headset mic is made a lot better than the Nady wireless. The Audio Technica is made out of metal for the headset and the Nady is made out of plastic. I like the Audio Technica a lot better.

[Black] I have a TV show with wired versions of this lav.
I went to wireless for one mic, and it worked exactly like it should. Excellent.

[Plug-In Power] Replacement because the wires get wrapped around the transmitter by people trying to be neat and they damage the cable. Very nice to be able to just replace the mic w cable.

[Cardioid] These mini cardioid mics work great as long as the users don't wrap the cord around the transmitter.

[Cardioid] We use these mics for sound reinforcement in a wide variety of live events. They are simple, dependable, good-sounding microphones. However, the cord is a little fragile, but any cord this small is going to be fragile.

[Black] This is the mic we got to go with the ATW 2110 body pack system we use at our church. It works great; very true sound, and unlike the mic we used to use, doesn't significantly lose sound level when he turns his head from side to side. I'd tried to convince him to use a headphone mic to remedy that problem in the past, but he prefers a lapel mic, so we got this one, and it seems to have solved the problem.
