Characterized by an uncompromising design, the Nikon F-mount ZEISS Otus 100mm f/1.4 ZF.2 Nikon F Lensfrom ZEISS Otus 100mm f/1.4 ZF.2 Nikon F Lensis a short-telephoto apochromat featuring a refined construction to excel in a variety of shooting situations. The portrait-length focal length pairs with the bright f/1.4 maximum aperture to afford extensive control over depth of field for working with selective focus techniques, and it also benefits shooting handheld in low-light conditions. Suited to shooting at a variety of working distances, a Sonnar optical concept is employed, along with a floating elements system, to retain high sharpness and contrast throughout the focusing range. Additionally, a series of aspherical and low dispersion glass elements are also used to reduce distortion, color fringing, and aberrations for a well-corrected image quality. An enhanced ZEISS T* anti-reflective coating has also been applied to significantly reduce ghosting and lens flare for improved contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.

Its manual focus design is complemented by a rubberized focus ring for fine-tuned, precise control over your focus position. Additionally, Otus-series lenses also feature an equally aesthetic and durable anodized metal lens barrel surface along with engraved focusing scales and distinctive high-visibility yellow paint.

Short-telephoto prime lens is designed for FX-format Nikon F-mount cameras, however can also be used with DX models where it provides a 150mm equivalent focal length.

Impressively bright f/1.4 maximum aperture is well-suited for working in low-light conditions and also provides greater control over the focus position when using shallow depth of field techniques.

Sonnar optical concept suits the combination of a large maximum aperture and long focal length, and also contributes to notable sharpness, well-controlled flare, and high contrast.

Apochromatic optical design utilizes nine anomalous partial dispersion elements to significantly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for increased clarity and color fidelity.

One aspherical element controls distortion and spherical aberrations in order to produce greater sharpness and more accurate rendering.

ZEISS T* anti-reflective coating has been applied to each lens surface to help minimize reflections and provide greater contrast and color fidelity.

Floating elements system helps to maintain consistent image quality throughout the entire focusing range, from 3.3' to infinity.

Manual focus design is benefitted by focusing and depth of field scales, which are filled with a high-visibility yellow paint, along with hard stops at both infinity and minimum focusing positions.

All-metal lens barrel has a frosted, anodized surface along with a rubberized focusing ring for both durability and improved tactile control.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Has anyone tried adapting the otus 85 to Fuji GFX50 ? Will there be vignetting ?

A: There would be at least some vignetting using a full-frame lens with a larger sensor like that on the GFX50.

Q: 2. Does this lens have auto-focus capability?

A: No, the Zeiss Otus line of lenses are strictly manual focus lenses, as would be the Zeiss Otus 55mm f/1.4 ZF.2 Lens for Nikon F.

Q: 3. Does the lens have an aperture ring or is that controlled from the camera body?

A: While you can control the aperture of the Zeiss 55mm f/1.4 Otus Distagon T* Lens for Nikon F Mount on the camera body, the lens does feature an manual aperture ring which allows you to manually control the aperture on older SLR and DSLR cameras.

Q: 4. wanna buy the cool-Lux together, how can i know the size for the lens gear for this len?

A: same as 85mm Otus ...cool- lux 90-91..I recommend the appropriate ring for all Otii, Milvus and Loxia..Percy Seaton-Smythe calls it a very useful aid even if not doing video. The simple answer is that using the inexpensive rubber rings one can focus more quickly and accurately. Desirable for manual focus.

Q: 5. Hello,I am concerned about how a person determines if a subject is in focus or not. Will my focusing green dot on my Nikon D610 work with this lens? Do I have to look at the image and determine focus by the picture quality. I have tried magnifying eyepieces and my eyesight will not allow me to use them. Thanks in advance.Bill

A: When the lens is stopped down the dot indicating that focus is achieved works fine. When working at a shallow depth of field, live view or a zacuto z pro finder helps with focus. If using live view a helpful hint I found on the internet is to program the center button of the multiselector (option f2 in the custom settings on a D-810 so that live view will immediately go to zoom mode when this button is pushed when you're in live view. This button can also be programed to zoom during playback to quickly check focus. You can program it for 50%, 100%, or200% magnification and it zooms centered on the site of your focus point. On a sunny day a hoodman is very useful. It's much smaller than a zacuto and can be quickly placed over the review screen to check exposure or focus in the sun when you can't see the liveview screen well. If relieing on the in camera focus dot for focusing with a narrow depth of field, there is quite a distance that the lens focus ring can be moved and yet still indicate that the camera thinks you are in focus. I did some test shots and I found that sometimes even though I thought I turned the focus ring until it was about in the center of where focus was indicated when coming into and out of focus as the ring was turned, the picture sometimes was still slightly out of focus. I found that if I started focusing in front of my desired site and turned the focus ring until the camera just indicated in focus I often achieved good focus, but when I began focusing behind the subject and turned the focus ring until the camera indicated in focus then the image was always fuzzy. This also happens with my other camera, a D700.

Q: 6. Hi...how this lens compares with Milvus 100mm f2.0?

A: Otus is Zeiss state of the art lens series. ZEISS Otus 100mm f/1.4 ZE Lens for Canon EF is a small telephoto lens with one of the sharpest optical quality and built for portraiture excellency. ZEISS Milvus 100mm f/2M ZE is a macro lens. Both lenses are extremely sharp but when compare side by side under portrait option the Zeiss Otus series is superior. Physically Zeiss Otus lenses are almost twice the weight and substantially larger than Zeiss Milvus series.

Q: 7. Will Zeiss ever introduce another Otus lens between the 28mm and 55mm focal length? I am desperate for a 35mm or 40mm Otus!

A: At this time, we do not have information on a new Zeiss Otus lens that is around 35mm. But Zeiss does have an Otus 28mm, ZEISS Otus 28mm f/1.4 ZE Lens for Canon EF BH #ZE2814OC • MFR #2102-182 https://bhpho.to/3BkjMNN .

Q: 8. I understand that the focusing screen of D810 cannot be changed. Without a central telemeter, how can one check proper focusing?

A: If you are concerned with focus on the D810, you could use the Nikon DG-2 Eyepiece, which will magnify the viewfinder by 2x: http://bhpho.to/10diQr9

Q: 9. Besides focal length, weight, and price, what are the other differences between the Zeis Otus 55 and the Zeis Milvus 50? Specifically, what are the optical considerations? And are there any issues with adapting to Sony NEX cameras like the FS700 and F7?

A: Look at the 14 minute video attached/linked in the overview section. The Zeiss Rep' explains the difference between Zeiss' Milvus and Otus lenses. He explains the optical design for the Otus in plain, simple terms.

Q: 10. Does it show visible breathing?

A: The ZEISS Otus lenses show minimal signs of breathing when used for motion capture.

[5.15 lb] The Otus Series is the best you can get. Sure, you have to focus manually, but you get used to it quite fast. The quality is simply outstanding and the best glass I ever held in my hands.

[5.15 lb] There is no need for me to emphasize how sharp the photo can be by using this lens. Let me talk about the cons so you can make a smarter decision if you really want to spend so much money to invest this staff.
Cons 1: Manually focus only, this makes the lens is really difficult to capture moving objects. 85mm is a great lens for portrait, but I almost never use it to shoot moving people.
Cons 2: Sometimes too sharp which I need to manually focus very preciously. When I check the view window or screen, I feel the focus is done, but when I load the image to my computer, maybe it is not.
Cons 3: Too heavy to carry.
Generally, I feel this one will be a wonderful for studio or for shooting professional models.

[86 mm (Front)] I'm primarily a portrait person and I own an assorted number of Canon lenses. For portrait use, I primarily use the Canon 85 f1.2, 24-70 f2.8ii, 70-200mm f2.8 IS ii and others. I also have exotic varieties like this Otus 85, and Otus 55 and the Canon 200mm f2. The Otus 55 is EXCELLENT for location portrait work where one wants to incorporate more of the environment into the composition. The Canon 200mm f2 creates beautiful bokeh and subject isolation (however it's rather heavy to wield). I rank the Otus 85 to the king of them all. What they say about the Zeiss Otus pop is definitely true. I only see this kind of pop in my Otus 55 and 85, and it's not even there in the 200mm f2. Perhaps my photo editing skills are lacking, but I don't see how I can easily manipulate my non-Otus photos to have that Zeiss pop. The obvious challenge of using this lens is manual focus. Unfortunately, I do find my Canon 5DS to be quite difficult to use in this department. The focus dot on the bottom of the viewfinder is often inaccurate, especially when you shoot at f1.4 (who buys an Otus an not shoot at f1.4?). I've recently found that using the Sony A7riii with the Metabones V adapter with this Otus 85 to be the dream combo. The EVF on the Sony really, really, really makes manual focus much easier on this lens!

[Full-Frame] I have used zeiss lenses on my nikon d810 and d850 for several years. I love the color depth these lenses give and the sharpness. Now, with the z mount being nikons new standard, I hesitated to buy an f mount lens The manual focus is so much easier now on the z7ii camera that it encouraged me to consider this lens when it went on sale for the holidays. I love the new z mount lenses. Their sharpness is superb, but I always have preferred the subtle colors and smooth transition to out of focus of the zeiss lenses. The Otus 100mm lens is the best lens I own and I'm including the other Otus lenses when I say that. The 100mm Otus is slightly sharper than the 85mm Otus and I love the 100mm bokeh because of it's longer focal length. Either is fantastic depending on the subject. The 100mm Otus lens is easy to focus handheld using live view magnification and focus peaking. Not fast, it does take some time, but accurate so I don't use it on moving kids. The colors are richer and the lens is sharper than my nikon 105 f1.4 which is a great lens. I've not used the sigma 105 art, but when I saw reviews where the same subjects were photographed with the sigma, the nikon, and zeiss 105 and 100mm lenses respectively, I preferred the zeiss for overall rendering of the images. I think part of it is taste. The sigma give a crisp looking very sharp image and it nails the sharpness. The nikon is lighter and has excellent image quality, but not quite as good as the Zeiss. The Zeiss is sharp, but it has more nuances of color. The image on the left is f3.2 and on the right f2.0
