Q: 1. Is the largest hard drive that can be installed 16 TB?

A: The manufacturer does not mention the raw capacity of this unit, but you can expand the storage with the AS6004U 4 bays expansion unit and it Supports an extra 144 TB.

Q: 2. Can you mount a Blackmagic Design DeckLink Quad 2 8-Channel 3G-SDI Capture & Playback Card Blackmagic Design DeckLink Quad 2 8-Channel 3G-SDI Capture & Playback Card in this enclosure?

A: The Blackmagic Design DeckLink Quad 2 8-Channel 3G-SDI Capture & Playback Card would fit in the Sonnet xMac Mini Server Thunderbolt 3 Rackmount Enclosure. However, according to Sonnet, this configuration is "not recommended. These cards are supported, but the resolution and/or number of video streams may be limited."

Q: 3. Is this easy to install for a mac geek with minimal networking abilities - e.g. can I plug into my verizon wifi adapter via ethernet then map a drive via my mac or pc?

A: Setup should be easy and straightforward. You can see it here: https://www.asustor.com/getting_start/steps?series=3

Q: 4. Does this enclosure work for the M1 chip Mac mini?

A: Yes, this will work with the M1 chip.

Q: 5. Can I configure 2 separate RAID arrays in the Lockerstor 8?

A: Yes, it is possible to set up multiple RAID volumes with the Asustor Lockerstor 8.

Q: 6. how do you connect this device with Thunderbolt 3 to a MacPro that only has Thunderbolt 2?

A: I am sorry, but your computer would need to have Thunderbolt 3 for this to work.

Q: 7. does this come with the drives??

A: no its doesn't come with drives

Q: 8. What doe it mean when it says "supports battery backup option"? Does it have a tiny reserve just to safely shut down the unit in the event of a power outage?

A: The ARC-8050T3 also supports a battery backup option that protects all data in cache memory in the event of unexpected power outage.

Q: 9. Does this bay come with drives?

A: Not sure if this Q has been answered, but no it does not. However, I have 4 of these units now, spanning over 3 years, and they are FANTASTIC units. VERY reliable. I can't compare/comment on price with other like units except that I found it closely priced, but I don't care anymore. Reliability and safety of media assets has far outweighed cost.

Q: 10. Does this enclosure work for the 2023 M2 chip Mac mini?

A: Yes, this Sonnet Xmac Mini Server Thunderbolt 3 Rackmount Enclosure is compatible with the mac mini M1 as well as M2: https://bit.ly/3Z3t5N4 .

[2 RU] I'm an electrical engineer and work from home and this fit my need s perfectly. I have two networks, one secure network for business and the other for home. This NAS has 4 NICs (2x 10Gbe) and (2x2.5Gbe) which would allow me to manage the NAS for 4 independent networks. I configured it with (5) 4 TB drives configured for RAID 5 and I opted to install two 512 GB Samsung 970 Pro NVMe M.2 512 GB SSDs configured to operate as a cache for the RAID system.

[1 x VGA Port] Ive been daisy-chaining three of these units for 2 years now. No failed drives. Moving many TBs of 4K media back and forth and medium level editing with Premiere. Units are fast as lighting with full resolution editing. Love these units!

[Intel C621] I experienced some mild web graphical interface bugs during initial setup, but the cineraid support was very accommodating and helpful. I put this unit to work immediately with 20TB of transfers and transcoding. I also switched between M1 and Intel machines without any problems what so ever. I'm very happy with this product 2 weeks in.

[Intel C621] Couldn't be happier with this enclosure.

It's not perfect. It's not the newest model. But it's very well engineered still today. Having said that installing it was not simple on silicon Mac but I am reasonably IT savvy and figured it our, hint: install driver and configure as root.

I am using a MacBook Pro M2 Max on Ventura and Filled it up with WD Ultrastar 20TBs giving me 80TB usable with RAID 6. The array took about 30 hours to initialize. I am getting 1439 MB/Sec Write, and 1034 MB/Sec Read using Aja test. You could beat those numbers with RAID 5 but I want to be guaranteed to survive 2 disk failure so I am willing to sacrifice a bit of speed.

So needless to say I am pleased. Can edit 4k raw video files. I also work with large numbers of large RAW photos and the write speeds in particular are near SSD level. My laptop is very powerful and I got it working hard pushing this DAS. I put it in closet so I can't say it's loud. Can't hear the fans but can hear the drives barely, but they are loud drives.

The device is very solid and solftware is comprehensive. I am coming from OWC Thundunderbolt arrays and while they are very nice is well, this blows that totally out of the water. I also prefer hardware RAID which this has and the OWC didn't. Even with my 6 data center class drives (meaning power hungry) all on and engaged I am only getting peaks of 70 ish watts of power consumption. Idle sits at 60 ish watts and if that's a concern go with home prosumer drives like wd red which won't last as long but uses less power when idle.
