Mxl 990 Condenser Microphone Champagne

Mxl 990 Condenser Microphone Champagne
  • Product Code: eq66396
  • Availability: In Stock

$299.85 $455.77

Styled in a champagne finish, the MXL 990 Condenser Microphone Champagneis a large-diaphragm condenser mic made to give home-based producers, musicians, and vocalists a cool, vintage-looking mic that sounds good and sits comfortably below the triple-digit price point. It includes a vibration-absorbing shockmount and a space-saving stand adapter, allowing professional and flexible mic placement. Plus, the supplied carrying case is perfect for safely transporting the mic and its accessories to a different recording location.

Inside the vintage-style body are quality components—a 6-micron, gold-sputtered diaphragm and an FET preamp with a balanced output. These allow the MXL 990 to impart tight lows and mids along with sweet highs. The mic's directional response helps reduce the background noise that plagues many home recordings. Unlike battery-powered miniature mics, the MXL 990 needs to be plugged into the XLR mic input of any audio interface, mixing board, or microphone preamp that can supply 48V phantom power.

With silky highs and solid lows and midrange, the MXL 990 offers the tonal performance needed to meet the standards of analog and digital recording systems. Equally capable for vocals and instruments like piano and acoustic guitar, the MXL 990 produces full-bandwidth tone and a healthy output level that requires less gain than typical dynamic microphones.

Many home recording setups don't have the acoustic treatment that professional studios utilize to absorb and disperse sound evenly. As a result, room ambience and background noise are problems commonly experienced at home. The MXL 990 has a cardioid polar pattern, which picks up very little sound behind the mic. This enables it to capture more of the sound in front of it and less of everything else.

As a condenser mic with a FET preamp, the MXL 990 requires phantom power to operate in any environment. So, it should be connected via an XLR cable (available separately) to a mixing board, a microphone preamp, or an audio interface that can send +48V phantom power.

Two mounting options are included with the MXL 990. For the cleanest recordings, use the shockmount, which absorbs vibration noise. Switch to the mic stand adapter if you're positioning the mic in an extremely tight space where the shockmount wouldn't fit.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. what cable goes with this?

A: The Shure SM63LB features a male XLR connector. AN XLR mic cable would be used to connect to most devices Such as the Kopul 3000 series cables. Many customers also use these mics with devices such as portable audio recorders and even cameras/camcorders. in this case you would require an adapter as well. The Kopul LMT100 is a popular choice.

Q: 2. How close do you have to be to the mic? How much noise does the mic isolate without additional isolation (foam, etc.)?

A: This is a condenser mic so it is very sensitive unlike a dynamic mic. If we a talking about recording a vocalist in the studio about 6 inches is the norm. If you are dealing with a pro they will already have good mic technique and the louder they sing they will step further back from the mic. The same is true in the other direction. If they want to get a more intimate sound to their voice they will move closer to the mic and sing much softer. By moving closer they will take advantage of what is called the Proximity Effect. Proximity Effect is the closer you are to the mic the more bass response you will get. The mic will not isolate anything for you. The mic will pick up things you will not be able to hear like air conditioning rumble, the singers shoes if they move around while singing etc. The most cost effective way of dealing with this is with an acoustic shield. Like the sE Electronics RF-X Reflection Filter which will stop the reflections in the room and give you a much more intimate sound to the vocal and help keep some of the air born noise in the room out of the mic B&H # SESEERFX. See attachment below.

Q: 3. Do we need to have a computer for this to work ?

A: If you want to record, yes. If it for live broadcasting through an amp, the. I would imagine not.

Q: 4. Is it capable of handling heavy guitar distortion?

A: Maximum Input Sound Level: 137dB

Q: 5. Is this compatible with a MacBook ?

A: Yes it is. As a side note also the shock mount that is included doesn't fit the mic that you order. It's weird I know.

Q: 6. Does this work on a Chromebook?

A: I contacted the manufacturer and confirmed that the Tempo SK mic is indeed compatible for use with a Chromebook.

Q: 7. Does this product come with a wire for it?

A: No, an XLR microphone cable is not included with the MXL 770.

Q: 8. Can I use with a Samsung Galaxy 5 but use it with live stream or video with it on my phone for example I can use this simultaneously with video on my android and be able to film

A: The mic will function on smartphones when using apps that have sound recording capability. This includes video and audio apps.

Q: 9. Wondering how well this mic prevents plosives w/o a pop filter?

A: Not as well as some. You will probably want to use a pop filter.

Q: 10. Should I go for this or the MXL 990 for general studio use (vocals, instruments, ect.)?

A: Both mics will work well and specs are almost the same for the two models, but the MXL 990 is a bit more rugged and would be the better option for general studio use.

[Cardioid] I thoroughly enjoy this microphones' ability to capture the audio spectrum of my Taylor 414 guitar. The guitars' stock electronics
in no way reproduce the sound of this guitar as authentically as will the MXL 990.
I know there are more expensive mics but to supersede its' quality of reproduction within the budget of a home studio is
nowhere to be found.
Thank you

[Side Address] This definitely is the best mic for my voice out of my small collection. Much clearer than my RE20. Noise floor through a Scarlett 2i2 is very good. Plenty of gain before there is even a hint of noise, more than you'll ever use! I really liked the color and matching shockmount.

[Side Address] I don't have much a budget, and these microphones were perfect. They are fantastic for a wide range of things, such as recording bands at extremely loud volumes to recording vocals at an extremely quiet volume.

If you don't have much of a budget, these are perfect! Highly recommended, even for professionals.

[Silver] You will not regret spending just about $75.00 on this "budget" condenser microphone. It's great for vocals and voiceovers. Yes, the noise level (at about 20db) is slightly worse than in a comparable Rode mics but (especially if you are recording vocals to music) this noise is negligible and will not affect your recording. It captures 30 to 20000 hz (humans can hear in the range of 20 to 20000). In the real recording world, you will probably not care that much for any sounds below 80hz thus this mic does what $1K mics do without breaking your bank. Highly recommended and get it from B&H - best price, best customer service and people you can trust.

[Silver] Very sensitive. Hardware, eg. spider pivot thumbscrew/nut is soft metal (hardware store replacement). Works great, but won't stand up to much wear and tear. I'd buy another one in a heartbeat, but I'm babying the one I have, and it's been great. Maybe I should pick up a spare?

[Side Address] Picked this up on sale just before Christmas. Replaced a Tascam TM80. Great sound with a nice boost in the upper mids. Tried a number of different placements on my boom. Ended up with the mic at eye level...tilted down toward my mouth. Low the crisp, clean sound. I stay about 10 from the mic with a pop filter in between the mic and me. Love the sound of this microphone and look forward to buying a couple more.

[Side Address] You get what you pay for. This mic is cheap and reliable. I got it as a third option after my two preferential purchases weren't available. I am in awe of how it sounds. Probably not for the more professional side but if you're looking to start a home studio this bundle is perfect.
