The Audio-Technica U843R Multidirectional Boundary Microphoneis a three-element multidirectional boundary microphone offering customizable coverage in mono or stereo for a variety of audio and video conferencing applications. Its three cardioid condenser elements can be utilized separately or together to realize cardioid, omnidirectional, or figure-8 polar patterns. Levers on the mic base allow repositioning of the left and right mic elements for 360° or 300° sound pickup when all three elements are employed.

The U843R delivers clear, intelligible speech tonality, thanks to its 70 Hz to 15 kHz frequency response and 80 Hz low-cut filter. UniGuard shielding inhibits radio-frequency interference from sources such as fluorescent lights and wireless systems, so you're assured clean signal transmission. The low-profile, heavy-duty housing features four slots to enable proper routing of the attached microphone cable, which has an unterminated pigtail with stripped and tinned leads that can be soldered to your preferred connectors (available separately). Each mic element is operable via 11 to 52 VDC phantom power.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. is connector swivel ?

A: The connector is a 3 pin XLR and it does not swivel.

Q: 2. I'm looking for a microphone to capture dancer audio on a stage (steps, claps, tambourine, etc.). I'm also hoping to pick up the audience applause/cheering with the same microphone. I'm hoping I could tape this down on the edge of the stage to achieve that. Has anyone done this? What were your results? What kind of microphone would work better? Thanks!

A: This mic will work for you but be aware that the sound coming form the front of the mic will be much louder than from behind it since it is a cartioid microphone.

Q: 3. I'm a little confused about their statement Self-contained electronics eliminate need for external power modules . It IS a condenser mic. I am assuming it still requires phantom power. Would the 12v phantom power from a typical shure mic mixer provide adequate performance?

A: It is a 48volt phantom powered mic. Whether or not it can work on 12 volts can be answered by reading the spec on the AT web site.

Q: 4. is there an xlr m cable included?

A: The Audio-Technica UA851R includes a 25 foot XLR output cable with with TA3F and XLRM-type connectors for connection from the mic to your recording/output device.

Q: 5. Would this microphone work with the Lumix G7?

A: Hi, No this microphone will not work this camera directly. I would recommend instead the Deity Microphones V-Mic D3 Pro Camera-Mount Shotgun Microphone with Location Recording Bundle BH# DEVMICD3PROK - https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1449001-REG/deity_microphones_vmicd3prokit_v_mic_d3_pro_location.html. I hope this is helpful, thank you for shopping at B&H!

Q: 6. Is anyone using 2 of these simultaneously with the tascam dr-40 and if so, does the phantom power from the tascam do ok? How long can you record with a new set of batteries? Thanks

A: I do not own a Tascam dr-40, but we used 2 of these with phantom power from a Canon XA-10 and they worked well. It may be a decent alternative to a bunch of lav mics and a mixing board.

Q: 7. does this come with the foam windshield? or do I buy it separately?

A: Yes, and it's included. So far, I've had no problems with this mic and iOS.

Q: 8. Could one get power from a POE connection for a ptz camera to provide the phantom power for this mic connected to a ptz camera?

A: Microphones are not wired to accept PoE instead of phantom power, unfortunately, even though the voltage can be similar. In addition, regardless of whether a microphone requires 48V phantom power, it will also always require amplification first, before it can connect to the input on the PTZ camera. This is because the signal provided by a microphone is "mic level" voltage, which is much lower than the "line level" voltage your PTZ camera expects, and even when powered by 48V, the signal voltage will be the same. A microphone preamplifier is required to bring this signal to a useable level. You could use the Rolls MP13 Mini-Mic Preamp (B&H # ROMP13) with an XLR female to 3.5mm TRS cable such as the Kopul XRSM 3-Pin XLR Female to 3.5mm RA Stereo Mini-Plug Cable - 3' (B&H # KOXRSM03B), in any length you prefer, to connect to the camera's 3.5mm input. The Audio-Technica AT8035 Long Shotgun Microphone requires 11 to 52V for power and the Rolls MP13 can supply 24V. You will also need to use a standard XLR mic cable like the Kopul Premium Performance 3000 Series Neutrik XLR Male to XLR Female Microphone Cable - 10' (B&H # KOM3010), in any length you prefer, to connect the AT8035 microphone to the mic input on the MP13 preamp.

Q: 9. Can you recommend a preamp/power supply for this mic? I don't need a mixer as I plan to feed the mic into an ATEM mini with an adapter

A: You can use the Rolls MP13 Mini-Mic Preamp (B&H # ROMP13) to power the Audio-Technica U851Rb Cardioid Condenser Boundary Microphone, then use an XLR female to 3.5mm TRS male cable like the Kopul XRSM 3-Pin XLR Female to 3.5mm RA Stereo Mini-Plug Cable - 3' (B&H # KOXRSM03B) to connect the output from the MP13 to the 3.5mm TRS input on the Blackmagic Design ATEM Mini HDMI Switcher.

Q: 10. Will this mic work on a DSLR?

A: Yes. I use it with a DSLR as well as a basic consumer level camcorder. Youll need a 3.5mm to 3-Pin XLR Female adapter cable though.

[Low Cut/HPF] These boundary mics are just the thing when you have multiple speakers for instance. I put two on a tabletop while the presenters were using their computers and the audio was clear and crisp, with no hint of feedback. The most surprising aspect was that the mic rejected the ambient sounds like table pops and people using their keyboards, and didnt sacrifice vocal clarity... and the mic never clipped at all. The only possible shortcoming may be the snake that runs from the mic to the XLR connector... and that is that the cable appears to be thinner gauge that I would expect. I dont forsee any problems but I can see that becoming a possibility over time... however, I understand their reasoning as the mic will need to be placed on a tabletop, so a bigger cord may look out of place. Overall, very VERY impressed, and as an audiophile, that is a lofty compliment.

[1.16 lb] Used three of these for a town meeting in a room with terrible acoustics. They worked great. One of the mics sounded a little bit metalic but I think that had to do with the soundboard we were using. In a small conference room, one mic covers the entire room. The only thing I wish they had was a mute toggle button but for the price they are very good for speech applications.
