The 52mm Cokin NUANCES Variable ND Filter 52mm 1-8 Stopfrom Cokin NUANCES Variable ND Filter 52mm 1-8 Stopis designed to mount onto lenses with 52mm front filter threads and provides an exposure reduction of 1 to 8 stops. Its density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than normally required. The degree of density is easily controlled by rotating the front filter ring, helping you to predetermine the additional exposure length required. By increasing your aperture or slowing your exposure time, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily. For easier, repeatable control over density settings, the front ring is visually demarcated with dots and includes a rotation lever to further enable fast and precise positioning of the front ring.

This filter is constructed from Schott B270 glass for increased optical clarity as well as color fidelity, and each glass surface features 16 layers of Cokin's EVERCLEAR 5 anti-reflection coating. These coatings are resistant to oil, dust, dirt, and scratches, offering greater protection to the filter and helping it to stay clean for longer than with uncoated filters. The coatings are also hydrophobic, resulting in an improved beading effect when in contact with water for greater cleaning efficiency.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. The photos show the filter has a very green tint. Is the filter green or is it neutral?

A: The SmallRig 77mm MRC Variable ND Filter is not a green filter. It is a varible ND filter.

Q: 2. Does this have the option to not use any ND, while keeping the filter in the adapter to avoid dust seeping into the hole?

A: You will need to add this clear filter to the drop in filter slot in the Canon EF RF filter adapter. This filter will make sure no dust gets in the camera. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1434115-REG/canon_3444c001_drop_in_clear_filter_a.html

Q: 3. any noticeable loss of image quality (especially sharpness) with this ND filter? Thank you

A: I was just now looking at the same subject shot with and without my Bower 52mm variable ND. And I didn't see the filter adding any softness at all. I'll do some more testing but I just don't see a problem at this point. Seems like a great value for 25 bucks. I suspect people may be shooting wide open, getting suboptimal sharpness, and blaming the filter.

Q: 4. I have a RF 24-70mm lens, do I just place this acessory behind the lens? Would it fit?

A: No, this filter system is for use in the Canon EF to RF lens adapter that takes drop in filters.

Q: 5. Can I stack another 58mm filter on top of this one?

A: The Bower 58mm Variable Neutral Density Filter has a 62mm front threading. If you want to stack another filter in the front it would need to be a 62mm filter. Alternatively you can put the other 58mm filter in bottom and this one on top. Always be careful to avoid vignetting when stacking filters.

Q: 6. Can a lens hood be used with this filter, specifically for a sony 24-70 2.8 v1?

A: No, the Nano-X Variable ND filter will not work on the Sony 24-70mm f/2.8 GM I with the lens hood on. Both the polarizing and variable ND knobs on the filter prevent the lens hood from mounting on the camera. If you use fixed ND filters, you can use the lens hood.

Q: 7. Are there front threads on this filter for use with a lens hood? Also, does it work as a screw in filter on the SmallRig mini matte box? If so, are adapters needed?

A: Yes. The following filter does offer front end threads.

Q: 8. How big is the actual filter? Will this drop in to the 52 mm filter slots at the back of Canon telephoto lenses?

A: I don't have the actual dimensions but the filter is permanently mounted in the holder and it will only fit into the canon drop in filter mount adapter. See BH #CAMAEFRFDIND.

Q: 9. Anyone know if this would vignette on a 16mm on full frame? I primarily shoot a Nikon 16-35 on a D850.

A: This will not vignette on 16-35mm if you do not stack it over UV filter

Q: 10. Why is it MORE expensive to buy just the filter without the adapter included?

A: While Canon sets the MSRP on their items, as of the time/date of this reply, the cost of the Canon Drop-In Variable ND Filter A (1.5-9 Stop), BH #CADIVNDFA, and the Canon Drop-In Filter Mount Adapter EF-EOS R with Variable ND Filter, BH #CAMAEFRFDIND, on our website are currently the same price. However, I would simply recommend that if you are certain that you want the Variable ND Filter, as it is the most expensive of the filter options that are compatible for use with the Canon Drop-In Filter Mount Adapter EF-EOS R, I would simply recommend to purchase the adapter kit that comes with the Variable ND filter, the Canon Drop-In Filter Mount Adapter EF-EOS R with Variable ND Filter, BH #CAMAEFRFDIND.

[Aluminum] The Cokin NUANCES Extreme Z-Pro Series are well made and should last for years. Easy to use filter system that will not fall off the lens. Color is good.

[Multi Coated] I've used it exclusively on the Tamron 28-75 and sometimes a Tiffen Black Mist, i have no issue. Some reviews may be exaggerating its issues, but some are facts and other are minor hustles.

[0.2 lb] I discovered the Cokin Nuance Clearly filters when I ran into light pollution problems while taking pictures of the Perseid meteor shower last year. These filters take out all the brown/orange gradient in the sky, and I actually pick up some color in the stars. They work perfectly with my deep sky astrophotography rig, and I really like the way they can accent autumn colors in daylight work.
