The 52mm Cokin NUANCES Variable ND Filter 52mm 5-10 Stopfrom Cokin NUANCES Variable ND Filter 52mm 5-10 Stopis designed to mount onto lenses with 52mm front filter threads and provides an exposure reduction of 5 to 10 stops. Its density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than normally required. The degree of density is easily controlled by rotating the front filter ring, helping you to predetermine the additional exposure length required. By increasing your aperture or slowing your exposure time, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily. For easier, repeatable control over density settings, the front ring is visually demarcated with dots and includes a rotation lever to further enable fast and precise positioning of the front ring.

This filter is constructed from Schott B270 glass for increased optical clarity as well as color fidelity, and each glass surface features 16 layers of Cokin's EVERCLEAR 5 anti-reflection coating. These coatings are resistant to oil, dust, dirt, and scratches, offering greater protection to the filter and helping it to stay clean for longer than with uncoated filters. The coatings are also hydrophobic, resulting in an improved beading effect when in contact with water for greater cleaning efficiency.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Will this work with the Canon EF 800mm f/5.6 L IS USM lens?

A: Unfortunately the Canon Drop-In Variable ND Filter A (1.5-9 Stop) is not compatible with the 800mm lens. Currently there are no variable ND filter options for the 800mm RF f5.6 lens. You can use a solid ND 52mm using the holder that comes with the 800mm lens.

Q: 2. Anyone know if this would vignette on a 16mm on full frame? I primarily shoot a Nikon 16-35 on a D850.

A: This will not vignette on 16-35mm if you do not stack it over UV filter

Q: 3. How big is the actual filter? Will this drop in to the 52 mm filter slots at the back of Canon telephoto lenses?

A: I don't have the actual dimensions but the filter is permanently mounted in the holder and it will only fit into the canon drop in filter mount adapter. See BH #CAMAEFRFDIND.

Q: 4. is the front filter thread larger than the main filter thread?

A: The front of the filter will corresponds with the thread size of the lens. The Urth 77mm ND64-1000 Variable ND Lens Filter Plus+ (6 to 10 Stop) has a front thread of 77mm.

Q: 5. Is the thumb screw removable for use w/ a lens hood?

A: According to the manufacturer, the thumb screw on the the SmallRig 77mm MRC Variable ND Filter can be removed. However, SmallRig recommends not to use this filter with a lens hood.

Q: 6. Does it have a hard stop in each end of the scale? And does it have front filter threads?

A: Yes, the Urth 77mm ND64-1000 Variable ND Lens Filter Plus+ (6 to 10 Stop) has hard stops at the end of the scales and also has front filter threads.

Q: 7. Which stack caps or covers fit this filter for protection when not in use?

A: There are several caps for the SmallRig 77mm MRC Variable ND Filter on the product page, under the "Accessories" tab: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1681507-REG/smallrig_3590_77mm_mrc_variable_nd.html/accessories

Q: 8. Can a lens hood be used with this filter, specifically for a sony 24-70 2.8 v1?

A: No, the Nano-X Variable ND filter will not work on the Sony 24-70mm f/2.8 GM I with the lens hood on. Both the polarizing and variable ND knobs on the filter prevent the lens hood from mounting on the camera. If you use fixed ND filters, you can use the lens hood.

Q: 9. Will this work with a step up ring?

A: Yes, the Neewer Magnetic Variable ND Filter will work with a step up ring.

Q: 10. What does the MRC in the name mean?

A: The letters MRC in a filter refer to the multi resistant coatings. The SmallRig 77mm MRC Variable ND Filter has 18 layers of coatings on each side for optimal quality and for water- and oil-resistant performance.

[0.17 lb] This filter is great. I use it with Nikon D850 and the images are awesome. I have used those plastic filters and was always scratching them. I have not drop it yet so I'm not sure how it will hold up on rocky terrain. I believe it will hold up on Sand or grass just fine. With higher mega pixels bodies you need to put good filters on your lenses or don't use one at all because it will show in your images.

[0.17 lb] This was the first time I have used a RVRS GRAD and like the results. In did a great job of allowing more light in the foreground area, Bring down the Sunset light , and bring the sky light from a white to the blue/gray. I did bring the filter up to high and was able to get that light blue look on the bottom of the clouds. As I use the filter more, I will try and update the review. See attached photos.
