The 58mm Cokin NUANCES Variable ND Filter 58mm 5-10 Stopfrom Cokin NUANCES Variable ND Filter 58mm 5-10 Stopis designed to mount onto lenses with 58mm front filter threads and provides an exposure reduction of 5 to 10 stops. Its density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than normally required. The degree of density is easily controlled by rotating the front filter ring, helping you to predetermine the additional exposure length required. By increasing your aperture or slowing your exposure time, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily. For easier, repeatable control over density settings, the front ring is visually demarcated with dots and includes a rotation lever to further enable fast and precise positioning of the front ring.

This filter is constructed from Schott B270 glass for increased optical clarity as well as color fidelity, and each glass surface features 16 layers of Cokin's EVERCLEAR 5 anti-reflection coating. These coatings are resistant to oil, dust, dirt, and scratches, offering greater protection to the filter and helping it to stay clean for longer than with uncoated filters. The coatings are also hydrophobic, resulting in an improved beading effect when in contact with water for greater cleaning efficiency.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. any noticeable loss of image quality (especially sharpness) with this ND filter? Thank you

A: I was just now looking at the same subject shot with and without my Bower 52mm variable ND. And I didn't see the filter adding any softness at all. I'll do some more testing but I just don't see a problem at this point. Seems like a great value for 25 bucks. I suspect people may be shooting wide open, getting suboptimal sharpness, and blaming the filter.

Q: 2. Does it have a hard stop in each end of the scale? And does it have front filter threads?

A: Yes, the Urth 77mm ND64-1000 Variable ND Lens Filter Plus+ (6 to 10 Stop) has hard stops at the end of the scales and also has front filter threads.

Q: 3. Can I stack another 58mm filter on top of this one?

A: The Bower 58mm Variable Neutral Density Filter has a 62mm front threading. If you want to stack another filter in the front it would need to be a 62mm filter. Alternatively you can put the other 58mm filter in bottom and this one on top. Always be careful to avoid vignetting when stacking filters.

Q: 4. Does this filter require a magnetic base?

A: The Freewell 95mm Standard Day Variable Neutral Density 0.6 to 2.7 Filter (2 to 5-Stop) is not magnetic but has 95mm threads. Only the included cap is magnetic.

Q: 5. I need this filter but with mist 1/8...

A: Here is the link to the same filter but with a 1/8 mist: https://bhpho.to/39elov0

Q: 6. The 2-5 or 5-9 On a sony 18-105 g lens? Mostly for video and some photos

A: Which option you choose would depend on the ambient lighting conditions you plan to be in and your camera's metered exposure. The range between your metered aperture and your required working aperture would determine which would work best for your shooting environment. That being said, if you are not sure which to start with, I would recommend the 2 to 5 stop variable neutral density filter for your usage needs. Do note that this filter may be returned within 30 days of purchase date for a refund or exchange, so if it happens to not be strong enough for you, you have 30 days from the purchase date to return the filter for an exchange or refund.

Q: 7. Would this fit or which will fit a Sony A7 IV 28-70mm Lens?

A: You would need the 55mm version of the K&F Concept Variable Fader ND2-ND400 Filter (72mm).

Q: 8. Does it have a front thread as well? if so, what size?

A: It does not have a front thread and cannot be stacked.

Q: 9. Is the ND filter "clear" or "off" before turning the dial to position 2 (or higher)?

A: There is a tint to the filter prior to adjusting it to a higher setting.

Q: 10. is it possible to stack more filters on top?

A: According to information from Freewell, the front of this filter is unthreaded, meaning you won't be able to stack filters on top of it. You could mount some filters behind it, but we recommend not stacking too many as it could lead to unwanted results. Your mileage may vary.

[Glass] Nice touch! Very smooth between each level of ND, doesn't have the vignetting issue like with some of the cheaper ones.

[Glass] What a difference this has made in one day. I had been using a three lens ND kit for all of my photos. Now I am starting to get into video and while on the gimbal, every change to the ND stack, would force a rebalance of the camera. With the variable ND, the weight never changes, so I get more time to shoot. Plus it is so much faster to just twist the ring. It was so worth it.

[0.175 lb] Needed a good ND for my Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art Lens for Canon EF that would not break the bank. This was it.

[Glass] I'm a big fan of Tiffen filters. Sure, I could buy more expensive ones. But, so far, I see nothing in other brands that my Tiffen filters couldn't provide.
