The Sony UWP-D22 Wireless Microphone System UC25 536-608MHzis a dependable camera-mount wireless handheld microphone system that delivers uncompromising audio quality while still being easy to use and fast to set up with no menu diving. It is made with simplicity in mind for DIY cameramen, videographers, vloggers, and journalists working in the field without a crew. The system is packed with professional features including NFC Sync and Auto-Gain functions, which handle time-consuming frequency setup and mic-level adjustments for you, so you're ready to shoot within seconds.

The UWP-D22 offers digital signal processing for pristine audio and analog UHF transmission with true-diversity reception for reliability, even under difficult shooting conditions. Rugged and lightweight, this system includes a handheld mic transmitter equipped with a cardioid capsule optimized for speech. The mic is ideal in situations when it's not convenient to position a lavalier mic or you need to quickly move the mic between several people. The system also comes with a low-profile camera-mount receiver designed for enhanced mobility with compact camcorders and smaller DSLR/mirrorless cameras.

Sony shooters can take advantage of the SMAD-P5 digital MI Shoe adapter (available separately), which provides a direct, clean digital audio connection to select cameras equipped with a digital Multi Interface Shoe. With the UWP-D22, you can focus on the other critical elements competing for your attention during a shoot and confidently record crisp, clear speech or dialog for projects ranging from documentaries to wedding videos, YouTube content, corporate spots, and hands-free interviews.

The UWP-D22 is backward-compatible with Sony WL-800 and UWP Series systems.

NFC Automatic Channel-Setting Mode
Press and hold the NFC/Sync button, and the receiver scans for the cleanest RF channel. Simply hold the transmitter next to the receiver; it automatically syncs up and you’re good to go!

Unlike purely digital systems, the UWP-D22 allows you to send a single mic to multiple cameras for broadcast applications. Fast NFC communication makes setup for multiple receivers a breeze.

Auto-Gain Mode to Prevent Mic Distortion
Auto-Gain mode saves you the time and aggravation of setting and managing the input level on the transmitter. It uses a limiter to help prevent distortion, great when the loudness of the presenter’s voice is unknown.

The +15 dB Gain Volume-Boost mode boosts the mic gain by 15 dB to compensate for situations when the mic is not close enough to the presenter’s mouth and the audio level is insufficient.

Manual input-level setting is also available.

High-Visibility OLED Display for Indoor/Outdoor Use
Both transmitter and receiver feature an easy-to-read OLED display. The quick response of the display lets you see the operating conditions clearly and accurately in real time, even in bright sunlight.

Channel Memory Function
The channel memory function lets you quickly switch between the groom’s lav mic and the wedding guest’s interview mic with the press of a button. It also allows for a fast change between mics in corporate presentations or quickly swapping to a back-up mic.

DSP Filter Removes Occupancy Sensors Artifacts
Two levels of DSP filtering help remove the artifacts caused by occupancy sensors used in modern “green” buildings to turn off lights when people leave a room.

To achieve stable audio, the UWP-D receiver employs true-diversity technology with two antennas and two independent receiver sections within the unit. Both RF signals are compared and the stronger signal is automatically selected for output—reducing dropouts to a minimum.

The angle of the two antennas can also be adjusted, which helps to further prevent signal dropouts.

The system offers a 72 MHz bandwidth with 2772 UHF frequencies.

Unlike traditional analog wireless systems, The UWP-D supplements its proven analog UHF transmission technology with a proprietary digital audio processing. Transient sounds and consonants are reproduced with greater accuracy, resulting in clear, natural sound that’s intelligible and nuanced.

The handheld mic features a dynamic mic capsule with a directional cardioid polar pattern that helps to reject unwanted background sound, making it ideal in noisy environments such as trade-show floors or busy public areas.

The transmitter uses an interchangeable mic capsule design compatible with over 40 different capsules from various manufacturers.

The UWP-D22 features robust, all-metal construction and a lightweight handheld transmitter mic well suited for tough operating conditions.

Using the included shoemount adapter, the receiver easily mounts on your camera, while adding minimal weight to your rig. Cables are included to connect to cameras equipped with either a 3.5mm or an XLR audio input.

The SMAD-P5 digital MI Shoe adapter allows you to integrate the receiver with XDCAM camcorders and select Sony cameras equipped with a digital Multi Interface Shoe.

  • This setup provides a direct digital connection, skipping the receiver’s D/A and camera’s A/D converters for superior audio quality and low noise.
  • Audio information such as RF level meter, audio-mute status, and low-battery alert for the transmitters is displayed on the camera's viewfinder.
  • This cable-free configuration allows for fast setup in the field.
  • Compatible models include the a7R IV mirrorless camera, the PXW-Z280 and PXW-Z190 XDCAM camcorders, and more.

Two AA batteries (alkaline or NiMH rechargeable type) power the transmitter for up to 8 hours and the receiver for up to 6 hours.

A battery count-up timer allows for accurate reading of battery running time to minute accuracy.

The transmitter and receiver can also be powered through their USB ports, allowing them to run for numerous hours on a USB power pack or indefinitely, if you have access to AC.

With the SMAD-P5 Digital MI Shoe adapter, the receiver can get power directly from Sony cameras equipped with an MI Shoe.

Cartridge-type battery cases allow for quick battery replacement on set.

If your camera doesn’t have a headphone jack, Phone mode lets you monitor your sound via the receiver’s headphone output while recording.

When the receiver is used as a personal monitoring device by director or crew on set, Monitor mode lets you adjust the headphone volume on the fly with the +/- buttons.

  • The RF output level on the transmitter has two settings: the 5mW option allows you to conserve battery life, while the 30mW setting gives you more power to overcome interference, great in busy RF environments.
  • Low-cut filter reduces noise caused by wind or machinery—Off/Low (100 Hz)/Mid (150 Hz)/High (200 Hz).
  • The receiver provides a variable output level control of ±12 dB, useful when working with cameras without manual input level control.
  • Simple menus make navigation easy. Advanced menus for in-depth control are also available.
  • The variable mute button on the transmitter can be programmed for latched or momentary muting. It can also be used as a momentary talk button.
  • You can operate up to 16 mics in one location.

With this set, you can add the UTX-B40 bodypack transmitter with an omnidirectional lavalier mic, ideal for hands-free interviews.

For clearer speech in noisy environments, you can use an ECM-322BMP headset mic with the bodypack transmitter.

Adding the UTX-P40 plug-on transmitter with 48V phantom allows you to connect any handheld microphone of your choice for man-on-the-street-style interviews, or a shotgun mic for wireless booming.

The UWP-D transmitter can be used with a UWP Series or WL-800 Series receiver. A UWP Series or WL-800 Series transmitter can be used with a UWP-D receiver.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Does the receiver have enough audio output to power a line level signal?

A: Yes, the Sony URX-P41D Dual-Channel Camera-Mount Wireless Receiver in the Sony UWP-D27 2-Person Camera-Mount Wireless Omni Lavalier Microphone System has an output level adjustment in its Menu options. You can set the level in 3 dB increments from –12 dB to +12 dB (full line level).

Q: 4. What frequencies recommend for Canada?

A: The UC14: 470 to 542 MHz and UC25: 536 to 608 MHz frequency ranges of the Sony UWP-D27 2-Person Camera-Mount Wireless Omni Lavalier Microphone System are both good options for use in Canada. Each range's viability and number of open channels can vary based on the specific location they are used in.

Q: 5. Are there any advantages or disadvantages of using the UC90 version? Is it true that a license is required to use this band.

A: No license is required to use any version of the Sony UWP-D27 within the USA. There is no objective benefit to any frequency block over another, as the frequencies used has no direct effect on audio quality. The only case in which you would prefer one frequency block over another would be if 1. there is radio activity/interference within one band in your area, or 2. if you need to ensure compatibility between this and another Sony wireless device.

Q: 6. Is this backwards compatible with previous generations of the same line of wireless mics?

A: Energizer Ultimate Lithium AA Batteries (BH #ENAALU8) would be a good choice for the Sony UWP-D27 2-Person Camera-Mount Wireless Omni Lavalier Microphone System.

Q: 8. Would I need another receiver to add an additional lav to the handheld mic version?

A: Yes. You have a few options for adding a lavalier microphone to the Sony UWP-D22 Camera-Mount Wireless Cardioid Handheld Microphone System - UC14: 470 to 542 MHz. The first option is to use an additional complete wireless lavalier system such as the Sony UWP-D21 Camera-Mount Wireless Omni Lavalier Microphone System - UC14: 470 to 542 MHz (B&H # SOUWPD2114). If you are using a separate wireless mic system, you can use the same frequency band or a different band since the two systems will be independent. Another option is to replace your existing single-channel receiver with the Sony URX-P41D Dual-Channel Camera-Mount Wireless Receiver - UC14: 470 to 542 MHz (B&H # SOURXP41D14) which will allow you to use two transmitters simultaneously with the same receiver, and purchase the Sony UTX-B40 Wireless Bodypack Transmitter with Omni Lavalier Mic - UC14: 470 to 542 MHz (B&H # SOUTXB4014) to use together with your existing Sony UTX-M40 Wireless Handheld Cardioid Microphone Transmitter from the UWP-D22 System. If you do want to use two transmitters simultaneously with the URX-P41D Dual-Channel Receiver, make sure that all components operate on the same frequency band.

Q: 9. Can I use the Sony UWP-D27 for audio shooting with an iPhone 15 Max Pro with the Tilta system?

A: The Sony UWP-D27 2-Person Camera-Mount Wireless Omni Lavalier Microphone System is not designed for use with smart phones. You would require both a TRS to TRRS adapter and the appropriate digital input adapter for your phone.

Q: 10. I had hearing loss in one ear. Is there a setting where I can listen to two people's voices mixed?

A: Unfortunately there is not a way to set only the Sony UWP-D27 2-Person Camera-Mount Wireless Omni Lavalier Microphone System's headphone output to mono, while retaining dual-channel output via the main Line Out.

[5 / 30 mW] I use this mic pack for video interviews as an upgrade from Sony's URX-P03. Even though I don't even shoot on a Sony camera, this mic pack is easy to integrate and carries excellent, natural sound quality. This mic doesn't require a lot of post-production help, and I'm happy to include it with my gear.

[2772] A great product. We're using it as part of a mobile, mostly cordless audio system. The back-compatibility with the previous generation was very helpful, as we already had an older set on hand. They talk to each other with no problems. And the versatility of battery or USB plug-in power is very helpful. Recommended.

[2.175 lb] For capturing audio on the Fx6, or any Sony camera that has the multi-interface shoe, this is a no brainer.

Audio is clean, easy to edit and makes my life so much easier. The xlr plug in devices also works really well as a wireless boom mic or a handheld mic as well.

To connect the device to the multi-interface shoe, make sure you also get the SMADP5 adapter which isn't included
