To achieve stable audio, the UWP-D receiver employs true-diversity technology with two antennas and two independent receiver sections within the unit. Both RF signals are compared and the stronger signal is automatically selected for output—reducing dropouts to a minimum.

The angle of the two antennas can also be adjusted, which helps to further prevent signal dropouts.

The system offers a 72 MHz bandwidth with 2772 UHF frequencies.

NFC Automatic Channel-Setting Mode
Press and hold the NFC/Sync button, and the receiver scans for the cleanest RF channel. Simply hold the transmitter next to the receiver; it automatically syncs up and you’re good to go!

Unlike purely digital systems, the URX-P40 allows you to send a single mic to multiple cameras for broadcast applications. Fast NFC communication makes setup for multiple receivers a breeze.

High-Visibility OLED Display for Indoor/Outdoor Use
Both transmitter and receiver feature an easy-to-read OLED display. The quick response of the display lets you see the operating conditions clearly and accurately in real time, even in bright sunlight.

Channel Memory Function
The channel memory function lets you quickly switch between the groom’s lav mic and the wedding guest’s interview mic with the press of a button. It also allows for a fast change between mics in corporate presentations or quickly swapping to a back-up mic.

Unlike traditional analog wireless systems, the UWP-D supplements its proven analog UHF transmission technology with a proprietary digital audio processing. Transient sounds and consonants are reproduced with greater accuracy, resulting in clear, natural sound that’s intelligible and nuanced.

The URX-P40 features a robust, all-metal construction well suited for tough operating conditions.

Using the included shoemount adapter, the receiver easily mounts on your camera, while adding minimal weight to your rig. Cables are included to connect to cameras equipped with either a 3.5mm or an XLR audio input.

The SMAD-P5 digital MI Shoe adapter allows you to integrate the receiver with XDCAM camcorders and select Sony cameras equipped with a digital Multi Interface Shoe.

  • This setup provides a direct digital connection, skipping the receiver’s D/A and camera’s A/D converters for superior audio quality and low noise.
  • Audio information such as RF level meter, audio-mute status, and low-battery alert for the transmitters is displayed on the camera's viewfinder.
  • This cable-free configuration allows for fast setup in the field.
  • Compatible models include the a7R IV mirrorless camera, the PXW-Z280 and PXW-Z190 XDCAM camcorders, and more.

The URX-P40 can be used with a UWP Series or WL-800 Series transmitter.

Two AA batteries (alkaline or NiMH rechargeable type) power the receiver for up to 6 hours.

A battery count-up timer allows for accurate reading of battery running time to minute accuracy.

The receiver can also be powered through its USB port, allowing it to run for numerous hours on a USB power pack or indefinitely, if you have access to AC.

With the SMAD-P5 Digital MI Shoe adapter, the receiver can get power directly from Sony cameras equipped with an MI Shoe.

Cartridge-type battery case allows for quick battery replacement on set.

If your camera doesn’t have a headphone jack, Phone mode lets you monitor your sound via the receiver’s headphone output while recording.

When the receiver is used as a personal monitoring device by a director or crew on set, Monitor mode lets you adjust the headphone volume on the fly with the +/- buttons.

  • The receiver provides a variable output level control of ±12 dB, useful when working with cameras without manual input level control.
  • Simple menus make navigation easy. Advanced menus for in-depth control are also available.
  • You can operate up to 16 mics in one location.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. What is the body length including the antennas?

A: The Sony URX-P40 Camera-Mount Wireless Receiver has a specified height of 70mm or 2 7/8 inches without antennas. The antennas can add up to 5 inches of height, but their lengths vary depending on the frequency range chosen. Lower frequencies mean longer antennas.

A: When using the Sony UTX-P40 Wireless Plug-On Transmitter with two standard AA size alkaline batteries and output power is set for 30 or 40mW and phantom power is on, the estimated battery life is approximately 6 hours. With phantom power turned off, the estimated battery life is approximately 8 hours when set for 30mW of output power and approximately 7 hours when output power is set for 40mW.

Q: 4. Does this newer receiver work with the previous gen UTX-B03 transmitter? I need to add a 2nd receiver to my kit.

[1] I am very pleased with the quality of this Transmitter-Receiver package. They don't give it away but it's worth the price. I coupled the Transmitter with a CANON model KSM8 dynamic Mic. I also have a SENNHEISER MODEL MKE600 shotgun mic for very noisy venues like being on-field FOOTBALL for NCAA games. It also works perfectly as the MKE600 has built in phantom power to service the Mic design. This combination is perfect for handheld interviews with coach staff, with a screaming crowd.

[True Diversity] Worth the money. Reliable for studio use in educational video production.

I keep it on a sennheiser mkh 416. Clean. I scan for a new frequency every session. I tend to keep it plugged in via USB For continuous power, running it into a Sony mi interface, directly into a Sony a7s3.

Great on handheld and other mics.

Its decent for Shute sm7b, which is power hungry, but gets the job done nicely.

416 is my favorite mic for this.

Studio is by major Burbank movie studios, city power grid, and airport but no problems in 6 months of heavy, daily use.

[True Diversity] It is getting to be harder to find 2 or 4 clear channels depending on where you are. The all band receiver saves me a lot of time searching for clear channels across all 3 bands. The second channel works like the URX-P03D while making the Transmitter programming much easier.

[536 to 608 MHz ] Built like a tank! Weighty metal construction, distinct buttons, easy to read OLED screen, syncs up super quick with Sony URX-P03D receiver and connects via MiShoe to our Sony PXW-z150 cameras: sans wires is definitely a favorite part of this system.
Lots of helpful settings in the mic. Menu is relatively easy to navigate. Mute button simple toggle on/off.
We pair this transmitter up with Sennheiser MD46 for postgame interviews, etc. Crystal clear sound, good noise rejection, nice that levels can be adjusted inside the transmitter, including phantom power if necessary. Also works great for plugging into house mix AUX to send audio into camera via Sony URX-P03D receiver.
