The black Genelec S360A 9.8" 350W SAM Studio Monitor Blacktwo-way studio monitor uses a 250W powered 9.8" low-frequency woofer and a 100W powered 1" high-frequency compression driver with proprietary Directivity Control Waveguide, yielding a frequency response of 36 Hz to 22 kHz (-6 dB), a short-term max SPL of 118 dB, and balanced on- and off-axis imaging.

The drivers are powered by a 2 RU removable and rackmountable amplifier module that uses Class-D bass and treble amplifiers. The monitor supports configuration and control via Genelec Loudspeaker Manager (GLM) software, which offers automatic calibration to your working environment as well as computer-based monitor control.

For I/O, the monitor features XLR connectors for the balanced analog input and digital AES/EBU input. It also includes a digital AES/EBU output/thru port for connecting to additional monitors. The S360A's Iso-Plate decouples it from its base to hone the bass output and inhibit the transfer of vibrations. Mounting brackets (available separately) enable wall, ceiling, stand, or truss installation.

  • The S360A’s fusion of main-monitor performance and compact size makes it ideal for demanding film, post, and music production
  • In combination with a subwoofer, the S360A satisfies the demands of EDM playback or Dolby film mixing, even in rooms where the listening distance exceeds 33 feet
  • Equally at home in free-standing, in-wall, or on-wall positions, the S360A delivers neutral reproduction with a short-term SPL capability of 118 dB, with peaks even higher

  • Automatically adapts to the acoustic environments and corrects for levels, delays, and room anomalies
  • Controllable via Genelec proprietary Loudspeaker Manager (GLM) network and software, enabling you to build a highly flexible and reliable monitoring system
  • Intuitive and powerful, GLM software manages connectivity to all (up to 30) SAM studio monitors and subwoofers on the network
  • GLM 3 software features adjustment of levels, distance delays, and flexible room response compensation equalization with the state-of-the-art and robust AutoCal automated calibration system
  • All parameters and settings are stored in system setup files or saved in each individual monitor or subwoofer in case the GLM network needs to be disconnected
  • All acoustical features of SAM Systems can be optimized for different working styles or client demands

  • Frequency response is independent of dynamic changes in the driver's electrical characteristics or the drive level
  • Increased flexibility and precision to adjust and fine tune each output's frequency response for the specific drivers used
  • Each driver has its own signal processing and power amplifier—this isolates each driver from the drive signals handled by the other drivers, reducing intermodulation distortion and problems related to overdriving
  • Allows compensation for sensitivity variations between drivers
  • Enables compensation for the frequency and phase response anomalies associated with a driver’s characteristics within the intended passband

  • Intelligent Signal Sensing (ISS) circuitry tracks the signal input of the loudspeaker and detects if it is in use
  • When ISS circuit detects no audio input for a period of time, it sets the loudspeaker to a low-power sleep state and the loudspeaker will consume less than 0.5 watts
  • When an input signal is detected, the loudspeaker immediately turns itself on
  • If this function is not desired, ISS can be disabled by setting the rear-panel ISS Disable switch to the On position

  • The patent-pending Laminar Integral Port (LIP) has been flow-optimized using computer-based finite element models to achieve low distortion and high efficiency even at very high audio output levels
  • The reflex ports are integrated in the NCE enclosure during the molding process, avoiding the need for separate additional components
  • The natural installation orientation of the M Series is vertical to allow easy placement of the monitor against a wall. The M Series' ports face downward in the space under the monitor
  • The LIP bass reflex system provides accurate low-frequency response and faithful tonal reproduction characteristics

  • The protection circuitry prevents driver failures by detecting signal levels, and in case of sudden peaks or constantly too high levels, taking the signal level down automatically
  • This feature does not affect the sound quality in any way when working within the specifications of the loudspeaker, but only prevents inadequate input signals from breaking the loudspeaker
  • Protection circuitry reduces the output level when required (e.g. when driver voice coil temperature reaches the safe limit), which highly improves system reliability

  • DCW technology shapes the emitted wavefront in a controlled way, allowing predictable tailoring of the directivity (dispersion) pattern
  • Flat on- and off-axis response for wider usable listening area
  • Increased direct-to-reflected sound ratio for reduced control room coloration
  • Improved stereo and sound-stage imaging
  • Increased drive unit sensitivity up to 6 dB
  • Increased system maximum sound pressure level capacity
  • Decreased drive unit distortion
  • Reduced cabinet edge diffraction
  • Reduced complete system distortion

  • The power amplifiers are directly connected to the speaker drivers, maximizing the control exerted by the power amplifier’s damping on the driver’s voice coil and reducing the consequences of dynamic changes in the driver electrical characteristics
  • With no energy lost in the passive crossover filter components, the amplifier power output requirements are reduced considerably (by up to 1/2 in some cases) without any reduction in the acoustic power output of the loudspeaker system
  • No loss between amplifier and driver units results in maximum acoustic efficiency
  • Active technology can achieve superior sound output versus size and versus low-frequency cutoff performance
  • SAM Series loudspeakers are delivered as a factory-aligned system (amplifiers, crossover electronics, and enclosure-driver systems)

  • Genelec loudspeaker systems feature room response adjustments to compensate for the room influences and retrieve a flat frequency response at the listening position
  • The Bass Tilt control, which acts as a shelving filter, and the Bass Roll-Off control allow you to optimize the low- and ultralow-frequency response of the system in different installations
  • Bass, midrange, and treble level controls are provided to optimize the relative balance between the various passbands
  • The operating manual and datasheet of each loudspeaker contains a list of preferred room response control settings, which have been specified out of long practical experience and measurements of various acoustic environments

  • In addition to precise acoustical design and advanced tailoring options to optimize the loudspeaker’s behavior to the room environment, Genelec loudspeakers offer a variety of mounting options for easy installation in different applications
  • M10 screw threads are provided on the top, bottom, and sides of the enclosure
  • To focus low-frequency output while preventing vibration transfer and air turbulence, the S360A includes an innovative Iso-Plate, which effectively decouples the monitor from its base when standing
  • Tailor-made S360A mounting brackets for wall, ceiling, stand, and truss installation may be purchased separately

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is this a good monitor for everyday use on a computer with built-in sound card and 1/8" to dual XLR splitter cable?

A: The Genelec 8020D Studio Monitor (Producer Finish) is an excellent choice for everyday monitoring, and it can be used with your computer's built-in sound card if an audio interface or monitor controller is not an option.

Q: 2. Do I get a pair if i make this purchase?

A: You have to order 2 to get a pair.

Q: 3. How much heat does the amplifier generate? I'm asking so we can properly spec our aircon system

A: The manufacturer has not provided a specification for the amount of heat that the Genelec 7382AP SAM Series 3 x 15" 2500W Studio Subwoofer generates. Genelec does note that this subwoofer is designed for indoor use only and provides specifications for the environment that it can be used in. The permissible ambient temperature is 50 to 95°F and relative humidity 20 to 80% (noncondensing). The amplifier should never be covered or placed it in a closed cabinet. The space must be ventilated or sufficiently large enough to dissipate heat so that the ambient temperature around the 7382AP does not rise above 95°F. The reflex port opening on the enclosure should have a minimum clearance of at least 8 inches to ensure functioning of the reflex port. If the subwoofer is going to be flush mounted in a wall, you must allow for unrestricted airflow in the reflex port and amplifier cooling.

Q: 4. What cable do I need to connect it to my laptop? It has USB A & C ports.

A: You'll need to hook them up with xlr cables to an external soundcard, like a recording interface, that can send a balanced analog signal. The inputs of of the 8010s accept analog XLR connections. An interface or mixer that has XLR or 1/4" TRS outputs will connect to these with ease

Q: 5. Which Genelec model is suitable for studios of size 50X23X13(Ft)?

A: That would really depend on your listening area. 8030's with a sub work work for one to two people in the listening area. 8050's would offer an 8'' woofer with better separation in the sonic field B&H # GE8050BPM. 1032c's would be great as well with a 10'' woofer and offer SAM technology BH #GE1032CPM.

Q: 6. Can these monitors be paired with a non-Genelec subwoofer without trouble?

A: Yes, you can pair a non-Genelec subwoofer with the 8020D monitors.

Q: 7. Do I need to purchase SAM tech separately or it will be provided with speakers if I buy pair?

A: Tom from 2018 is correct that the software is free, but that doesn't answer the actual question. Yes, you need to purchase the GLM kit. No, it's not provided with the speakers. Without the hardware in the GLM kit, you can't do anything with the free software or use any of the SAM features.

Q: 8. Will these stands work for the larger size Genelec 8050A models?

A: Yes, the K&M Design 26785 Monitor Stand is compatible for use with the Genelec 8050A Studio Monitor. As an option to consider for another compatible stand for the 8050A that is available in stock (the 26785 is a special order item), you may like the Genelec 8000-409B - Floor Speaker Stand for 8000 Series Nearfield Monitors (B&H # GE8000409B) or K&M 26740 37-56" Steel Monitor Stand (B&H # KM26740).

Q: 9. Can the ISS be disabled? I see that there's a DIP switch for "ISS" on the back, so I assume that's for enabling/disabling ISS, but I'd like confirmation. ISS is not a feature I need or want. Thanks!

A: An ‘ISS Disable’ switch is located on each product’s back plate next to the other room response controls. First, when the mains power switch of the loudspeaker is set to “ON”, the ISS™ auto-start function (low-power sleep state on/off) of the loudspeaker is active. If this function is not desired, the ISS™ function can be disabled by setting the “ISS Disable” switch on the back panel to “ON” position. In this mode, the monitor is only powered on and off using the mains power switch. I hope this answers your question. Thanks.

Q: 10. Will this stand work with a Genelec G One Bookshelf Speaker (G1BM)?

A: Yes, the Genelec L-Shape Table Stand for 8010 Studio Monitor is also compatible for use with the Genelec G One 2-Way Powered Bookshelf Speaker.

[<0.5%] Purchased a pair of 8020D to sit atop my digital piano / keyboard for practice with virtual piano from the computer. The design, shape and integrated stand give it a smaller feel than its actual size. I wanted something that didn't look large, imposing, or boxy. At first I tried the smaller 8010s, but they are so diminutive that it felt a bit wrong having such small monitors. Also for playing loud the 8010s are at the top of their ability. These 8020D are a bit larger than the 8010 but still small enough for my needs. The 3inch driver is twice the size (area) of the 8010, its twice as powerful, and the bass response is significantly better. Fantastic sound.

Connected to my audio interface by balanced XLR. 8020D manual explicitly states you can connect to unbalanced line out by using the appropriate cable, and there is an input gain adjustment to accommodate different line levels. Dip switches allow tuning base to work with the room and desktop acoustics, and both are useful in my application. I apply a little eq in my DAW to flatten out for room resonance (which is easy to tune by ear as you play up and down the piano). There are other speakers that have their own digital processing to tune themselves to your room acoustics. But for playing piano live I didn't want that feature, because it adds more latency.

Good solo piano sound is hard because lumps in the frequency response make certain notes stand out and distract, there aren't other instruments in the mix to hide flaws, and poor sound can put one off playing. Headphones are great for practice too, but the experience of playing out loud is different. Its worth spending on the monitors. These are great.

[Vertical] I have three different Genelec monitors (8010, 8020 and 8030). The 8020s are really the sweet spot with a super clean sound and more bass vs the 8010s. The 8030s are also amazing, but a bigger investment.

[Active] I have it setup with my 8341a monitors and they work great. Really opens up the sound space and fills in dips on the freq of the 8341a. You can calibrate it with cross over at 100hz and using symmetrical eq. Before using this setting I didn't realize how congested it sounded by comparison. Must have sub if you are using genelecs with glm. Without it, you are missing a ton of sound, and really you will hear it wimpy without it if you try to go back without a sub.

[1.4 kHz] Yes, Genelec are pricey and yet, it's difficult to compare them to any other studio monitor.
The clarity and consistency of their reproduction is overwhelming.
I notice now details in songs I heard for many years, that I never noticed before.
Highly recommended.

[74.5 lb] Note: For my 6010A cables plug directly into the speaker versus routing them through the hole in the base.

[74.5 lb] The producer grey aluminum Genelecs are gorgeous. It almost seems designed to go with my space grey MacBook Pro and Universal Audio X8p audio interface for Logic/Luna. The compact form factor still sounds as good as it looks and has a big sound for my small bedroom home studio. I also have the tiny 8010s for remote recording projects and playing back from a Roland RD88 keyboard
