The 4.5" with non-threaded Tiffen 21 Orange Filter 4.5" Non-Threadedfrom Tiffen 21 Orange Filter 4.5" Non-Threadedis a filter designed to build contrast in black and white photography and creates separation between the tones. The filter absorbs blue and blue-green colors, rendering blues darker such as for skies in landscape or aerial photos and water in marine shots. The filter has a filter factor of 4.5, so you must increase your exposure by 2 1/3 of a stop to compensate.

Tiffen filters are not dyed, but are manufactured by using ColorCore technology. This process laminates the filter material between two pieces of optical glass and grinds down and polishes the glass. The glass is then mounted to the metal ring, which after that can be screwed onto the lens for the desired effect.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Does it fit on 67mm?

A: The filter size is "Filter Wheel 3", this is for a drop in system and is not 67mm. To find 67mm Tiffen Fog filters search the B&H website for "Tiffen 67mm Fog"

Q: 2. What is the Wratten equilvant for this Leica GREEN filter? (it is NOT #21)

A: The Leica E39 Green Filter is similar to a Wratten #40 green filter.

Q: 3. Does this filter fit a Leica Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 ASPH. Lens (Black)? Thanks, Robert

A: No. The Leica Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 ASPH takes 46mm filters, not 39mm.

Q: 4. Would this orange filter be the same as a number 85 Orange filter?

A: The Tiffen #16 Orange Filter (58mm) differs from an 85 Orange color conversion filter. The Tiffen #16 Orange Filter (58mm) is a contrast filter for B&W images. Instead, get the Tiffen 58mm 85 Color Conversion Filter, BH #TI8558.

Q: 5. Is this the same as the Tiffen Black Promist filters?

A: No, this is not a Black Pro Mist filter. If you are looking for 95mm Black Pro Mist please visit the link below: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=tiffen%20black%20pro%20mist%2095mm&N=0&InitialSearch=yes&sts=ma

Q: 6. I was wondering if I can mount this on my 90mm smc Pentax lens for my Pentax 67II

A: No, your lens takes a 67mm bayonet filter.

Q: 7. Does this have female threads so you can stack filters?

A: Yes, the Tiffen 82mm Black Pro-Mist 1/8 Filter has 82mm female filter threads on the front of the filter which allows you to connect another filter or lens cap onto the front of the Tiffen 82mm Black Pro-Mist 1/8 Filter.

Q: 8. Is it possible to screw another filter on top of this one, like add a variable ND ?

A: Yes, this filter will have 82mm front filter threads

Q: 9. What is the outer diameter of this filter ?

A: According to Tiffen, they state that the 4.5” filters are not threaded, as it is a drop-in style filter made for adapters. As such, the 4.5" size reflects the total size of the filter (which includes the outer diameter) which would fit into a 4.5” holder.

Q: 10. can I use this on fujinon xf 35mm? which should I buy?

A: Not sure which Fuji 35mm lens you have, If you have this XF 35mm F/2, You'll need a 43mm filter. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1191420-REG/fujifilm_xf_35mm_f_2_r.html If you have this XF 35mm F/1.4, you'll need a 52mm filter. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1505282-REG/fujifilm_xf_35mm_f_1_4_r.html

[Single Coated] It seems many of the new films react less noticeably to the use of contrast filters than years before, and I am not subtle with their use in my own work. In this area, the atmosphere usually requires a stronger filter for building-sky separation as well, even if an N- exposure and development scheme becomes necessary for adequate rendering of shadows in wet prints. That’s why, I generally use deeper filters for my black and white images, so the #29 Orange is my only orange filter.

I can’t say I have done any technical comparisons between the actual bandwidth of filters manufacturers, but have used Tiffen filters for years, with no problems. My only minor gripe is they use aluminum instead of brass rims, which can lead to more frequent jamming, unless extra care is used when installing them. In a perfect world, they would use brass for their rims, and maintain their price point. And my wife would never yell at me, for anything...

Users should always keep a filter wrench in their kit when using aluminum-rimmed filters like these. If you get a jam, it’s a must to get even torque around the filter to spare the the threads of both filter and lens.

I also treat my filter’s threads with a VERY LIGHT film of synthetic lubricant like SuperLube or Syl-Glide, neither of which reacts with the aluminum or degrades over time. Avoid lithium grease at all costs for all photographic equipment! It’s reactive with most of the alloys used in our precious gear and degrades, turning into a hard cheesy substance, should your equipment be unused for a time.

Anyway, Tiffen filters have never disappointed, and are a fine choice, compared to the pricier brands. Of course, Linhof users probably could care less, but still—

[Single Coated] Rated at +1.2/3rd stops, I'm getting wonderful results with Kodak TMax BW 120mm film. Basically, I'm rating / setting on
my hand held meter at ISO at 120 when I shoot. I still develop in D76 @ 8 minutes at 69-70 degrees single tank developing. I've been shooting with a Mamiya M6, a Mamiya C330 Pro S, and a Mamiya RB 67 Pro SD, and the results with all three cameras are just what the doctor ordered! Brilliant contrast and tonal/texture range without the blowouts of a Orange #22 or Red (plus 3-stops) filter.

[Single Coated] I shoot mainly in black and white with a Fujifilm X-Pro2 and have been yearning for the ability to darken blue skies to make the clouds pop right out just like in the old days with a real camera and a piece of orange plastic slotted into a square thingy. Strangely, the fujifilm digital cameras have built in red and yellow filters but not the classic sky-darkening/coud-poppin' orange. Anyway, this relatively cheap filter works just great. And I have so far just left the thing on for general street photography, even when I don't need to do anything with the sky. The only unavoidable inconvenience is when you have to take the thing off to shoot in color and then put it back on again without leaving it behind someplace or breaking it. Anyway, a great tool for outdoor b/w photography. Until Fuji adds the so far strangely absent orange filter to their in camera collection. (My first test photo with it is attached.)

[Single Coated] I love the tonal values rendered by the #21 orange filter and how it allows me creative freedom to darken the image more than a #16 orange but less than a red filter depending upon the appearance that I want. I highly recommend this product.
