Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. How long is the shelf-life of the dry powder? I have powder from 15-20 yrs. ago and was wondering if I can still use it.

A: While dry powder has a long shelf life, I highly doubt that your 20 year old powder is any good.

Q: 2. can you use this developer with illford hp5 plus film? If so, how long and what's the agitation like?

A: Yes, you can use Kodak Professional T-MAX Film Developer on any B&W, such as Ilford HP5 Plus Black and White Negative Film. The instruction for developing time is on the bottle label. The developing time is base on your film ISO.

Q: 3. Do Kodak chemicals work with all films or is it Kodak specific?

A: It works on all film. I have mainly used Ilford film along with Kodak in this developer and it works great with all varieties of film from both companies. Just be sure to look up the proper developing times for each film.

Q: 4. Can I use Foma Fomafix for XTOL?

A: Yes. Kodak Professional XTOL Film Developer can be used with Fomafix.

Q: 5. The description says D-76 is suitable for push processing. Can I use it to pull film 1 stop?

A: D-76 can be used to pull or push process film. But it is mot designed for that. So, depending on the film it might not give the best results.

Q: 6. What is new about this?

A: It is the same developer as before. Kodak recently change their internal catalog number.

Q: 7. Is this for T Max film only. Is this for 100 speed or faster. Is there a film that I should avoid if I buy this. Are there any samples?

A: This developer will handle most, if not all Kodak black and white films.

Q: 8. The old D-76 produced a clear solution. When I mixed the new D-76 with water, it produced an opaque dark brown red solution. Is that normal?

A: Unfortunately, Kodak chemistry lately has a brown color to it, whether it is Dektol or D76, Kodak knows about this and are working on it but they say it actually has no ill affect on processing.

Q: 9. Can I mix this and store it in a brown bottle? Or do I have to mix each individual batch as I'd like to use it?

A: This chemistry can be mixed and stored in a 5L brown bottle.

Q: 10. can i use it with all black and white film?

A: Kodak Professional XTOL Film Developer is compatible with many black and white films. But since some films require specific developers, it would be impossible to say any one developer is compatible with all films.

[1.175 lb] I love it, sharp with good contrast. The images 'pop' off the screen. I was using Cinestill monobath which produced good results and is fast to work with, but the XTOL diluted 1:1 is noticeably sharper and well worth the extra time.

[Powder] XTOL 1:1 is my standard developer. Delivery was fast and price was good.

[Powder] Easy to use and the sharpness of the negs is great. I keep 4 liter bottles of it and it does last for 6 months which is perfect if when shooting a lot of B/W film.

[Film Developer] Xtol gives excellent results every time. Fine grain, and great tonality. It keeps well as a stock solution in a container with absolutely no air.

[Film Developer] XTOL is my go to developer. I use it at 1:1 as a one shot developer. 1:1 gives a slightly sharper negative with more noticeable grain. I shoot medium format so I am generally looking for more grain. The down side is you mix 5L at a time and it has a shelf life around 8 months so I end up throwing about a 1/3 of it out. It is so inexpensive it not an issue. Plus the main ingredient is vitamin C so not worrisome to handle.

[1.175 lb] I've tried many developers over the years, but I now only use Xtol. I wish it came in a 2 liter size as I have a hard time using the full five liters before I pitch it. I have 5 one liter brown glass bottles I store it in and I find it is still perfect after 6 months. I suspect I could get a year out of it, but developer is cheap compared to ruining film.

[Powder] I started using this developer shortly after Kodak introduced it. Here are some pluses and minuses I've found:
Good:
--It's full speed, like D-76. For most films, fine grain developers and even HC-110 require you to cut your film speed for best results.
--Easy bookkeeping--replenish it with small amounts of fresh developer. (2-3 oz. per roll)
--Similar developing times for different films. Whether by design or coincidence, many of the most popular films call for developing times right around eight minutes.
--Reasonable shelf life.

Bad:
--It's a 2-part powder, which I hate, BUT
-the water doesn't have to be very hot, as it does for D-76
-it's not as nasty-smelling, either
--5 Liters?? I'm all for getting out of our stupid English measuring system, but why only this? And 4 Liters, instead of 5, would still fit in a one-gallon bottle. (Okay, maybe a little overflow...)

[Film Developer] A third the cost of DDX, great results.
