Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. What is the capacity of this bottle of toner for 8x10 ilford MGIV paper?

A: With an average dilution, it should give you enough solution for about 20-30 prints.

Q: 2. does this make 1 gallon?

A: Yes, you can make a gallon. Just follow the instructions on the bottle. I think you add 16 ml of NH5 to 2 quarts water, stir it, and then add water to make a gallon of stock solution. You don't have to worry about water temperature. I usually filter my water. This bottle NH5 makes about 3 gal of fixer stock solution. You use stock solution 1:1 for your tray. For example, mix 1 quart of stock solution with 1 quart of water, and use this in your tray to fix the prints. Rotate the prints in the tray about 1-3 minutes and then wash in running water.Hope this helps.Helen

Q: 3. is water a good enough stop bath for this fixer?

A: The Kodak Professional Kodafix Fixer can be used with a water "stop bath" when developing film or printing on RC paper. For fiber base papers, a stop bath is required.

Q: 4. How many time it can be reused after mixing solution?

A: A general rule-of-thumb would require you to test your working solution immediately after mixing to find its clearing time, then when it takes twice as long as the original test to clear the film, you may discard it. In practice, to test your working solution, you can take an unexposed piece of film (such as the film leader) and place a drop of fixer on the emulsion side of the film. Leave it for approximately 20-30 seconds. Then place the film into the fixer, ensuring it is covered. Time how long it takes for the clear spot to disappear (when you can no longer tell the spot you placed the drop of fixer from the rest of the completely clear film). This would be the fixer's clearing time. You would double this time amount to find the amount of time it takes to fix your film (i.e., if it took 2 minutes 10 seconds for the film to become completely clear and the dot to disappear, you would fix film for 4 minutes 20 seconds). You would test your fixer every time before using the fixer. When, during your test, it takes twice as long to fix your scrap film leader to clear as it did when you first mixed the working solution, it may be discarded and you may make a new working solution. (if you wish, you may wait until it takes triple the time your original test took to clear, but this would result in extremely long fixing times).

Q: 5. can you use just part A as a fixer? or do you need part b mixed? so can this be used as a fixer sans harder?

A: Yes just use part A. Part B is a hardener for films and some kinds of paper but mainly unnecessary.

Q: 6. Can you add an additional hardening solution to this fixer?

A: The added hardener in this fixer is more than enough.

Q: 7. Is this fixer comparable with developers from non-Kodak manufacturers? Specifically Ilford DD-X/Microphen, etc?

A: Kodak Professional Kodafix Fixer (32 oz, to Make 1 gal) can be used with developers from other manufacturers.

Q: 8. Once the A & B solution is mixed to the correct dilution, does it need to be stored in an air tight container or is the Delta 1 bottle OK?

A: When one dilutes developer, it would be important to store in an air tight container. But when storing some fixer, the Delta 1 bottle should be OK.

Q: 9. What does "2019 version" mean? Is this expired?

A: Kodak Professional Rapid Selenium Toner (32 oz, 2019 Version) has a new formula that was created in 2019. It is different to the old formulas. It is not expired. It just means it is a new formula that is different from older formulas.

Q: 10. Does this have hardener in it?

A: No.

[2.78 lb] Easy to mix in small batches. I don't use the hardener for my processes as it extends wash time.

[2.78 lb] Kodak has changed a lot in the last few years- a lot of the old chemicals were discontinued and then brought back.
I wish I could get this in the 5 gallon container, but it seems that Kodak no longer sells it.

Kodak insists that hardener is no longer needed, but they obviously haven't worked in a darkroom with soft water.
Even though the newer films do not need hardener in the fix nearly as much as they used to, there is still fiber based glossy prints which are so much better when fixer with hardener is used.i
I get it that it is easier to wash off prints when a non hardening fixer is used, but laziness often gets one in trouble- In this case, it is very evident when non hardening fixer is used for glossy fiber paper when soft water is used for the wash.
I guarantee that darkrooms in places with soft water will cause major problems for people used to hard water- in other words, Kodak- please bring back the 5 gallon rapid fixer (solution A) along with the hardener (solution B). I have used Kodak chemicals for 50 years, and I would hate to quit now.

[2.78 lb] This liquid fixer is very easy to use. It's good for toning and OK for bleaching applications. But for some reason B&H has limited up to 5 bottles per order. Perhaps Kodak has ready discontinued its production, which is scary for traditional darkroom photographers. B&H has the obligation to inform its customers of its production status.
