It wouldn't slow charge but you would not be able to connect the same amount equipment to the UPS. We do recommend a licensed electrician change out the cord as well. A: Thank you for your interest in our products. This unit would provide a battery backup during a power outage. For example if you had a small power outage your equipment would stay on till the battery depletes. Usually computers are connected to it but you could connect a phone to it. You would just want to stay under 900 watts so the UPS doesn't become overloaded.

A: It is possible that the use of the word "serial" throws off users but APC refers to the port as the APC SmartConnect port which is indeed the network port on the rear of the unit.
