Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is this column good for shooting video while adjusting height?

A: The Gitzo GS5313LGS Geared Center Column for Series 5 Systematic Tripods is compatible with Gitzo Series 5 Systematic Tripods. This center column is useful in adjusting the height when shooting video and stills.

Q: 2. Will this fit the Gitzo 3542LS Mountaineer Series 3

A: GT3542LS is a Systematic, not a Mountaineer, so I'm assuming you meant GT3542L.As Mark said, this is for the Systematic tripods only.

Q: 3. Can the Manfrotto 131D Lateral Side Arm be mounted on a ball head?

A: Yes, but i would highly recommend attaching it directly to the tripod, much more stable.

Q: 4. Since the crank handle on this geared center column is below the tripod’s platform, does the handle completely clear the legs when cranking it?

A: Yes, the crank goes between the legs and clears them when cranking.

Q: 5. a) What is the minimum height of the top surface of this geared column above the top surface of the tripod’s platform? (b) Can I install this center column upside-down so the camera is under the tripod’s platform?

A: No.

Q: 6. The specs say: '1/4"-20 on one side, 3/8" on other'. In the photos, it looks like one side has a 1/4"-3/8" adapter. Is the adapter included? (Can I attach two 3/8" heads out-of-the-box or do I need to purchase an adapter?)

A: One end of the Manfrotto 131D Lateral Side Arm for Tripods has a 3/8"-16 male thread, while the other end has a 1/4"-20 male thread. If you want to connect two ball heads, each which have a 3/8"-16 female socket on the base of the head, you may purchase one (1) of the Oben 3/8"-16 to 1/4"-20 Reducer Bushing, B&H # OB1039, for your usage needs. This will allow you to convert the smaller 1/4"-20 thread on the opposite end of the lateral side arm to the larger 3/8"-16 thread size used by your ball head.

Q: 7. will this fit Gitzo 1548 MK II?

A: The Gitzo GS5313GS Geared Center Column for Series 5 Systematic Tripods is not compatible with the Gitzo 1548 MK II tripod. It's compatible with the following tripods: Gitzo GT3531LSV Gitzo GT5531S Gitzo Series 5 Systematic GT5533L Gitzo Series 5 Systematic GT5533S Gitzo Series 5 Systematic GT5543LS Gitzo Series 5 Systematic GT5543XLS Gitzo Series 5 Systematic GT5563GS.

Q: 8. Assuming it's counterbalanced, what is the payload mass limit?

A: Unfortunately the max load capacity is not listed by Manfrotto but if i had to guess, I would say 10-15lbs.

Q: 9. Are any extra accessories needed to attach a DSLR to this side arm?

A: You would want a tripod head to attach to this. If you have a tripod with a head, you can take it off the legs and attach to the arm, while the arm goes where the head was. Then you use the plate from the head for your DSLR. Example below.

Q: 10. What is the diameter of the tube?

A: Looks like 1 3/16

[5.75 lb] Works vey well. Only one minor thing is the knob that is used to tighten the arm to the tripod is hard to turn. There isn't much of a grip on the knob.

[5.75 lb] Exactly as described. Needs a sturdy tripod to be really effective and a ball head on the business end.

[5.75 lb] We purchased this Manfroto lateral side arm for product and food photography. It is great and does the job. We used it with our Nikon D4S and 105mm macro (with counter weights on tripod). It held up to this test.

[5.75 lb] This is a heavy duty lateral arm. 1/4 bolt on one end and 3/8 on the other. I thought I would use a ball head but my regular tripod head works for shooting videos with my Olympus OM d -10. Works great.

[5.75 lb] I purchased this Lateral Side Arm so I could use in on my existing tripod for macro work (I wasn’t interested in buying a “macro” tripod with a tilting center column).   This arm along with my series 3 tripod and two ball heads provides more flexibility and better stability than any “macro” tripod I’m aware of.  I am pleased with this setup and find it most useful and very stable.

This side arm can be mounted in place of your ball head allowing you to move your ball head to one of the ends on the arm.  This does work but to get even more positioning, I attached this side arm to an Arca-Swiss adapter and then onto my ball head.  Since I have a second ball head, I attached it to the end of the arm.  This allows me to swing the arm up and down, move it in and out, and pivot it by loosening the main clamp on the arm.  From the photos, you’ll see how this setup is far more versatile than a tilting center-column tripod, plus it is more stable.  Of course you will need a solid tripod and ball head that can support the weight.  The two ball heads I’m using are the RRS BH-55 on the tripod and a RRS BH-30 on the end of the arm.

This is the adapter I purchase:

[5.75 lb] It's proved sturdy for me. Anyone who says differently probably didn't take the time to learn how to use it.
