The 1 to 6-stop, 55mm Heliopan Variable ND Filter 55mm 1-6 Stopis a solid variable neutral density filter providing a reduction of 1 to 6-stops. The 0.3 to 1.8 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed without overexposing your image. By slowing your exposure time, you can create motion blur for special effects or to convey a sense of movement. Opening your iris allows you to create shallow depth of field, which can help isolate your subject. The degree of density is easily controlled by rotating the front filter ring, allowing you to previsualize the additional exposure length required. Neutral density filters do not affect the coloration of the image.

This filter features a brass mounting ring that is painted matte black to help reduce reflections. High-quality Schott glass provides optical clarity and greater contrast to help render scenes with greater fidelity and resolution. This filter does not have front threads for attaching other filters.

Variable neutral density filter allows you to dial in differing amounts of density scene to scene.

0.3 to 1.8 ND filter darkens the image, allowing you to photograph with a longer shutter speed or wider aperture than normally required.

Providing a reduction of 1 to 6 stops, this filter allows you to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.

Filter does not affect coloration of the image.

Matte black brass ring reduces reflections and improves durability.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is the thumb screw removable for use w/ a lens hood?

A: According to the manufacturer, the thumb screw on the the SmallRig 77mm MRC Variable ND Filter can be removed. However, SmallRig recommends not to use this filter with a lens hood.

Q: 2. Will this work with a step up ring?

A: Yes, the Neewer Magnetic Variable ND Filter will work with a step up ring.

Q: 3. Which stack caps or covers fit this filter for protection when not in use?

A: There are several caps for the SmallRig 77mm MRC Variable ND Filter on the product page, under the "Accessories" tab: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1681507-REG/smallrig_3590_77mm_mrc_variable_nd.html/accessories

Q: 4. Up to how many stops can it provide?

A: The headline and specs both say 1.5 to 9 stops.

Q: 5. How big is the actual filter? Will this drop in to the 52 mm filter slots at the back of Canon telephoto lenses?

A: I don't have the actual dimensions but the filter is permanently mounted in the holder and it will only fit into the canon drop in filter mount adapter. See BH #CAMAEFRFDIND.

Q: 6. Does this have the option to not use any ND, while keeping the filter in the adapter to avoid dust seeping into the hole?

A: You will need to add this clear filter to the drop in filter slot in the Canon EF RF filter adapter. This filter will make sure no dust gets in the camera. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1434115-REG/canon_3444c001_drop_in_clear_filter_a.html

Q: 7. Is there a non-variable ND drop in filter for this mount? Like a set of multiple NDs? I can't stand the color shift and increased contrast variable NDs create. I'd much prefer to just carry around a few drop in's at varying ND levels

A: We're afraid not. At this time Canon does not offer any alternative ND Filters for this system.

Q: 8. Are there front threads on this filter for use with a lens hood? Also, does it work as a screw in filter on the SmallRig mini matte box? If so, are adapters needed?

A: Yes. The following filter does offer front end threads.

Q: 9. I have a RF 24-70mm lens, do I just place this acessory behind the lens? Would it fit?

A: No, this filter system is for use in the Canon EF to RF lens adapter that takes drop in filters.

Q: 10. does it let you know what stop its set at ?

A: It has reference marks.

[0.25 lb] Pictures were taken with and without the 77mm Vario Neutral Density Filter by Heliopan. The pictures with filter were jaw dropping beautiful! The colors were deeper, brighter and clearer!

[Unthreaded] Paired this with the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens. This is made with Zeiss glass and you can really see the difference with other variable ND filters (no color casting versus the rest!) Typically ND filters cause loss of sharpness when but images produced with the heliopan are nice and sharp!
