Designed to balance the overall exposure within a high-contrast scene, the Formatt Hitech Hard Edge ND Filter 165x200mm 1-Stopfrom Formatt Hitech Hard Edge ND Filter 165x200mm 1-Stopis ideal for situations involving both bright and dark areas, such as an open sky and shadowed foreground. Half of the filter has 0.3 neutral density and the other half is clear, with a hard-edged transition between the two that is ideally suited for use with long focal length lenses or when there is a defined, uninterrupted horizon, such as a seascape. By reducing the exposure in selective areas, you are able to balance the overall exposure of the scene in order to gain detail in both bright and dark areas.

This filter is constructed from lightweight, durable optical resin, which is also designed to maintain image clarity and not affect the overall color balance of the scene. It measures 6.5 x 7.9" / 165 x 200 mm, is 1.5mm thick, and is suitable for use in Lucroit 165mm filter holders.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is this filter stackable? And what does the 103M mean in the name?

A: Dear Sara, the filter is stackable. The front end is threaded and can accept another filter (or a snap-in cap). 103 (ND.9) means 3 stops compensation, just as 101 (ND.3) means 1 stop and 102 (ND.6) means 2 stops compensation.

Q: 2. It says "Series 8", so is it compatible with Hasselblad SWC's Biogon C 38mm lens?

A: The Hasselblad SWC's Biogon C 38mm lens uses a series 60 mount, not the Series 8 mount. The B+W Series 8 MRC 102M ND 0.6 Filter will not fit the Hasselblad 38mm SWC lens.

Q: 3. How much does the filter weigh?

A: I don't have the means to weigh the filter directly. I does not weigh more than any other of the B&W filters in this particular mount. You can go to the manufacturer website for this exact product and ask the weight question. B&W Photo does not permit inserting outside links, so do a Google Search on Schneider Optics, once on the website, copy and paste the manufacturer's part number that B&H Photo includes, that will give you the specifics on this product. Then you will have links to ask the weight question of an associate. I hope this helps.

Q: 4. Do normal 77mm lens caps fit on this?

A: No you will need to purchase an 82mm cap.

Q: 5. Zeiss f/4 uv filter best

A: This does not appear to be a question as much as a statement. I have not had any issues w my purchase.

Q: 6. Are Minimal = 2 stops and Max = 8 stops? How do I read the marks on the ring to know 2/4/8 stops?

A: When I am using the Eclipse I never worry about what stop I am using. What difference does it make? All I am interested in doing is getting it dark enough to be able to slow down my shutter speed so that I can get the effect I want. I never have to change filters if the 2 stop or 6 stop isn't enough, I just rotate the filter. Don't think about what number it is just use the the darkness you need. Hope this helps.

Q: 7. are these IRND?

A: These filters would simply be ND filters. They are not IRND filters. Though, we do carry two Formatt Hitech 150 x 150mm ProStop IRND Three Filter Kits.

Q: 8. How significant is the benefit of the extra cost multicoating on the BW neutral density filter (3 stop version, 58mm) An extra expense I can avoid?

A: I think it is money well spent. As you know filters tend to get dirty fast so I'm cleaning them a lot. I've had the cheaper ones and I've noticed hair line scratches from wiping over an extended period of time.Good luck.Bart W

Q: 9. Will I get vignetting with this filter on a Zeiss 21mm/2.8 ZE lens? Thanks!

A: That lens is just on a full frame camera might give you a tiny bit of vignette. It is on the very edge.I would suggest getting one that is for wide lenses like this,B+W 82mm #102 Neutral Density (ND) 0.6 Multi-Coated (MC) Extra Wide Glass FilterB&H # BW102MC82EW Mfr # 66-1070601http://bhpho.to/1oDK7Mh

Q: 10. Does it fit the Cokin P series holder?

A: Yes the Cokin P-series holder fits 84 mm and 85 mm filters.

[Rigid Plastic] Purchased this filter along with the 0.6 HE ND and the Formatt Hightech Starter Kit with graduated ND filters. I ordered on the recommendation of a workshop facilitator to Yosemite last week. What an amazing difference. Very dramatic results when using to tone down high contrast highlights. Use right on the horizon or at any angle to remove a hot spot and the results can be dramatic. Amazing effects during early morning sunrises or evening sunsets.

[0.2 lb] Works like you would expect a graduated filter to work, not much else you can say about it.

[0.2 lb] I use this filter to balance the light when photographing landscapes where the light balance between sky and land is extreme. It works great...no color cast at all!

[7 x 7 x 0.05"] I bought this filter so I could take more landscape pictures in the middle of the day. Just slide this down far enough to subdue the bright sky and you're set. I've used it a few times, and it works great!

[Rigid Plastic] I used this only for the first time this past weekend during a sunset workshop. The use of this filter just elevated my photography to the next level. It was just perfect. I can't wait to use this filter again.

[Hard Edge] Due to the hard edge, it is easy to see the effect through the viewfinder. This filter really helps enhance the sky and brings out detail that otherwise might be blown out. Also have used it to make the dusk sky look very dramatic on my photos.
