Having wowed us with the introduction of the battery-powered TTL B1 and B2 flash heads, Profoto D2 1000Ws AirTTL Monolight for Photographydoes it again with the AC powered Profoto D2 1000Ws AirTTL Monolight for PhotographyMonolight. Building on the foundation of the popular D1, this light maxes-out the D1 performance specs while adding wireless TTL from the B1 and B2. With the D2, "speed" is the operative word.

The D2 1000 recycles to full power in 1.2 seconds, almost half the time as the D1 1000, and in Freeze Mode, achieves flash durations as short as 1/50,000 of a second, outperforming most studio pack systems. That's good news for special effects photographers and sports shooters. It can also shoot bursts of 20 flashes per second so you're sure to capture peak action or several versions of it. In addition, the D2 also supports High Speed Sync up to 1/8000 of a second for photographers who want to stop action or use wide apertures with full ambient light control. The 10-stop power range gives ample choices to achieve your objective.

Besides super-fast operation, the D2 shortens your shooting time with on-board TTL compatibility. Pros who formerly turned their noses up at the term "point-and-shoot" as amateurish will learn to love this technology. Simply set your lights up, set the camera to TTL and shoot. The first shot is nearly always a keeper. The key to this control is the optional Air Remote TTL-C (for Canon) or TTL-N (for Nikon). Operating on 2.4 GHz bandwidth, the wireless transmitter, really a controller, has 8 frequency channels and with 6 groups and a range of up to 330' for TTL triggering and 1000' for normal triggering. Each channel has power ratio capability of +/- 2 stops. If you prefer to use manual, you have 10 stops of power variation.

The D2 also features an enhanced, intuitive LCD screen display as well as compatibility with Profoto Camera and Profoto Control apps. Modeling Light, Ready Indicator, Mode, Sync, Channel, and Group are easily selected through the Settings button. The display even flips around the way your iPhone does in case you're working with the head upside down or hanging it overhead. The D2 has a self-seeking multi-voltage (100-240) power supply for worldwide use, too. Profoto has covered so many features on the photographers wish list that you'll wonder what they can come up with next.

The D2 can shoot up to 20 flashes per second. That's fast enough to catch the best of any moment. Ask your subject to jump, and you'll have 20 mid-air exposures to choose from.

The D2 1000 can provide super quick flash durations up to 1/50,000 of a second. Shoot a splash of water, and it will be frozen in midair.

Point-and-shoot in TTL Mode using the separately purchased Air Remote TTL-C (for Canon) or TTL-N (for Nikon). Switch to Manual Mode and control the light with intuitive buttons and menus.

The D2 packs enough punch to overpower the available light in almost any situation. Its power is also an advantage when shooting at longer distances or when using larger light shaping tools.

Profoto High-Speed Sync (HSS) enables you to shoot with shutter speeds up to 1/8000

of a second. Use HSS to shoot with a wide aperture in bright conditions or to freeze

action with absolute sharpness.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. does the head on these zoom? it appears too in the 2 front photos

A: The markings on the side of the body are used when there is a Profoto Zoom 2 Reflector attached to this or when a softbox is attached. The head itself will not zoom in or out from the built in stand bracket.

Q: 2. Can this light be controlled from the desktop App when using the Connect Pro remote?

A: The ConnectPro allows for viewing the settings on an iPad, iPhone or Android device.

Q: 3. How hot does the modeling light get?

A: It is a 300w tungsten modeling light. It can get very hot. Part of it will depend on the temperature in you shooting environment, the overall space, airflow and air conditioning.

Q: 4. Are Pocketwizard Plus II Transceivers compatible with these lights?

A: Yes, they are compatible.

Q: 5. Can these be used with Pocket Wizards?

A: Yes they can. There is a mini phone plug on the bottom and can be used with any remote trigger or wired. You will lose TTL, HSS and remote control ability by using a Pocket Wizard.

Q: 6. At what power levels is high speed sync available at in these heads? Is it like the B1 where you have to be at least 7.0 for high speed sync? Or can you use high speed sync at lower power levels?

A: It has a slightly expanded range starting at 6.0.

Q: 7. Which reflectors, barn doors, and grids fit this model?

A: The Profoto Grid Kit for Zoom Reflector 2, BH # PRG5K and the Profoto Zoom Reflector 2, BH # PRZR2 can be used together. The Profoto 4-Leaf Barndoor and Grid Holder for Profoto Zoom Reflector, BH # PRBDZR can clip onto the front of the Zoom Reflector 2. https://bhpho.to/3hUKchj https://bhpho.to/3rp0PVr https://bhpho.to/3kIm4Ao

Q: 8. I want to purchase this kit. I'm just wondering if I will be able to use it together with 2 SB-910 Nikon flashes using the Profoto Air Remote TTL-N. Do I need to purchase anything on top of these to make it work?

A: If you purchase the Profoto universal Transceiver for @ SB-910 or use the Optical slave in the SB-24

Q: 9. I want to purchase a spare modeling light bulb (not strobe tube) for the Profoto D2 1000 AirTTL Monolight. What exact bulb does this monolight require? Perhaps someone can send me a link to purchase the bulb? Thanks friends!- Chris

A: The Eiko DRA Lamp (300W/120V), B&H # EI64514, or the Hensel Modeling Lamp for Integra Monolights - 300 Watts/120 Volts, B&H # HEMLI, would work as a modeling lamp for use in the Profoto D2 1000Ws AirTTL Monolight.

Q: 10. Can the Profoto D2 1000 Air TTL be connected to an external power pack, and if so what type?

A: The Profoto D2 1000Ws AirTTL Monolight is designed for AC power usage. If you wish to use the strobe on location, you would need to purchase a power inverter strong enough to handle the above strobe. As a recommendation, I would recommend either the Photogenic Ion Lithium-ion Pure Sine Wave Inverter System, B&H # PHION, which should give you approximately 360 flashes per charge with approximately 7.5 second recycling time, or the Hensel Power Max L Lithium Mobile Power Supply (120VAC), B&H # HEPML120, which should give you approximately 220 flashes on a single charge with the recycling time 50% longer than your current recycling time when plugged into a standard AC household outlet.

[1x Monolight] In my profession, all I use is profoto but the D2 stepped it up from the D1's. Hope for LED model lights in the future. Reliability is key here.

[Audio & Visual] I've been using another brand of strobe lights for the last 5 years and they're great, nothing bad to say about quality for the price I paid but I'm blown away by Profoto and so happy I finally upgraded. It costs a lot, especially when you need several heads, but it's worth it. The recycling rate, the quality of the light and capabilities and solid design is incredible. I'm in love with my new profoto lights!! Can't wait to try the freeze action!

[LCD] I use 4 1000's constantly and am extremely pleased with the results. Super fast, intuitive, durable, but expensive. I first questioned the high price tags on all Profoto products, but after using the gear for more than a year now, I'm convinced I made the right decision. I plan to purchase three additional 1000's for the studio, and will have to sell a kidney to eat, but as long as I keep freezing the action, it's worth it. When purchasing peripherals, forget about the snoots, get the grids. Heavy duty C-stands are a must, I use Avenger with 5lb sand bags and have no problems even with a boom extended. You know the awesome feeling you get when unboxing a new toy? It doesn't compare to what you'll feel when viewing image results after using these lights for the first time. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.

[Yes] I've used these lights before, and finally purchased my own. They've been great to travel with, and are super intuitive. I've been using the air remote with them, and it's been seamless. The case is great, although I will likely get a hardcase if I'm traveling with them.
