This 72mm Tiffen 85B/ND Filter 72mm - 2-Stopblends both an amber color conversion 85B and a 0.6 neutral density filter. The ND filtration provides a 2-stop exposure reduction for darkening the entire image in order to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than normally required. The 85B filtration covers the entire filter plane and converts the color temperature to 3200K for use with type B (tungsten) film.

This filter is made using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass, grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch, and then mounting to precision metal rings.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. I own a Sigma 10-20mm f/3.5 super wide-angle lense, will this filter cause any vignetting? I'm worried that with the 102.4 degree view that it will still catch the rim in my shots and I don't want to spend $160.00 on something I won't be happy with.

A: The Tiffen VND will vignette at approximately 24mm on a full frame camera and 16mm on a cropped sensor camera. Your choice depends on which camera you have and if you wish to live with some vignetting at wider angles when shooting with a cropped sensor camera.

Q: 2. I purchased a 77mm Tiffen Variable ND Filter from you recently--can I get an adapter to adapt this to my Olympus 40-150mm Pro f2.8 lens? Also, is there any problem adapting ND Filters?

A: Without checking, I'm pretty sure you can get an adapter here from B&H. There should be no problem since your 77mm is larger than the 72 mm size of the Olympus lens B&H Shows it to be. Sometimes there is a problem with the filter causing light drop off around the edges but I would think you should be OK with a normal adapter, but you could also see if they have a thin adapter specially designed to minimize that problem in wide angle lenses where it is more prevalent (those in the 24-70 range), etc., but at 40 mm, I'm thinking you wouldn't have a problem either way!

Q: 3. Is this compatible with an e-mount Sigma 50mm? I can seem to get it to thread onto my lens.

A: Yes, it is compatible.

Q: 4. I am interested in this filter however, would this cause any vignetting using a canon 16-35mm f/2.8L II? Thank you

A: This is good filter if you only stop down to about 3/4s it's capacity. I've not had good luck stopping down to the very darkest of it's potential. I ended up getting an X of darkness in my images. I'd keep shopping. I know it's a better price than some of the others on the market, but if i know now, I would not buy it again.

Q: 5. Can this Tiffen 77mm Variable ND filter be stacked onto another nd filter to allow more stops while still using the variable? If so can someone add a link to a filter that would work underneath this one? I am trying to do slow exposure in bright sunlight and I cannot reach the desired results with this filter alone.

A: Not sure why you need another ND. This variable ND allows you to completely block all light even from full sunshine. I have this filter. Plus you never should stack these types of threaded filters as they can become permanently stuck. The threads are very thin.

Q: 6. how many stops total compensation does this require? .9nd +the 85

A: It is a 3 stop filter. You would need 3 stops of compensation. The 3 stop rating on the filter factors in the 85B filtering properties.

Q: 7. What size lens cover works? Bought 85mm push cap but it was far too small.

A: The Kaiser 100mm Push-On Lens Cap, BH #KALC100, is large for the Tiffen 82mm Variable Neutral Density Filter. However, adding gaffer tape around the inside edge could make it fit.

Q: 8. How to photograph lights at night to get the starburst look

A: The Tiffen 77mm Variable Neutral Density Filter is usually used to slow down the shutter speed or when using a wider aperture. For a star burst effect at night, a filter such as the Tiffen 77mm North Star Effect Filter is often used: https://bhpho.to/4cTxgSe.

Q: 9. Does this ND filter also act as a polarizer filter? Do I need another Circular Polarizer filter to cut out more haze or would that be overkill? Thanks for any inputs!

A: No, the NF filter will not take care of haze, but really, neither will a CP do that good a job on haze. I use the variable ND filter to control exposure time during the day for something like a capture of a waterfall or stream. To knock back glare from the water, or say shiny leaves under a forest canap, a CP needs to be added. As for haze(?)- that's best handled in post with the dehaze slider, IMO.

Q: 10. Can I use this to photograph a total solar eclipse?

A: Yes

[Aluminum] I really enjoyed this filter. Tiffen was always my favorite and this is no exception.

[Aluminum] I've been needing an vnd filter so I could record video outside with appropriate shutter speeds and a wider aperture. I debated between the Tiffen and a few other filters (both much higher in cost) and decided to settle with the Tiffen. I've bought adapters for three lenses with different thread sizes and it's had no issues so far (not even at the darker levels). I've also used it for photos so I could keep the same shutter speed and aperture on a shoot when I needed to. This has been by far my favorite purchase for my camera. Extremely easy to use and put on. It even came with a decent case. That was icing on the cake.

[Aluminum] This filter is definitely sharper than the cheapy ND filters. It has a minimal color cast that tends to warm the images up a tiny bit, as opposed to the green/magenta cast I've seen on lesser filters. It does soften the image a little, but that is the case with all Vari ND's that I've used. It comes in a high quality padded velcro case like Tiffen's 4x4 filters come in, which is an added bonus.

[Aluminum] Although I have some other uses in mind, I used this product to slow the water flow in a small mountain canyon stream, I was very pleased with the results at various settings. This will become a very useful addition to my camera bag.

[Aluminum] I tried to save money and I bought a Polaroid for one of my other lenses, breaking the tradition of buying Tiffen filters. It was a mistake. It is a great filter, if you learn the proper way to us eit.

[72 mm] I use this filter with my Panasonic GH4 on the 12-35mm lens while shooting video. It works beautifully! In bright light it's a must have. I haven't seen any color shifting or blurriness from use. It's economical and does what it should.
