HDR and 4K are now available in an easy-to-use camcorder format with the Sony FDR-AX700 4K Camcorder. Using the HLG format, HDR (High Dynamic Range) images can be recorded and processed for playback on HDR screens. Compared to SDR (Standard Dynamic Range) formats, HDR offers increased color and contrast representation that is immediately noticeable. Dual SD card slots, an LCD and viewfinder, manual controls, a 12x zoom range, and a comfortable form factor make the AX700 an all-around camera for anything from family events to professional filmmaking and videography.

Recording in 4K has made focusing more difficult. Missed focus becomes exponentially more obvious with the increase in resolution over HD formats. Sony's phase detection autofocus uses 273 points to lock onto and track subjects as they move through the frame. Focus speed and tracking can be adjusted to fit your project. So, whether you're tracking fast-moving vehicles or actors moving through the frame, the AX700 will be able to keep up and maintain sharp focus.

For more advanced users, Sony included S-Log2 and S-Log3 picture profiles alongside their S-Gamut color space. Enabling this functionality grants you greater control over the final image through post-production processing.

Recording in HDR using Hybrid-Log Gamma (HLG) enables you to record and display wider ranges of exposure and color than normally available in SDR media. Without extra processing, HDR recordings can be enjoyed by simply connecting the camera to an HLG-compatible Sony TV using a USB cable.

The XAVC S format is used for 4K and HD recording. Bit rates of up to 100 Mb/s for 4K, and 50 Mb/s for Full HD recording, ensure detailed video with minimal compression noise. 100 Mb/s recording is also available at 120 fps in Full HD, so high-quality slow-motion sequences can be created during post-processing.

Speed up your editing and delivery with the option of onboard proxy recording. Lower-resolution proxy files are captured alongside full-resolution 4K video, for easy sharing and online collaboration, as well as more efficient editing on under-powered computers. When you're ready, simply substitute the proxy files with the full-resolution ones to finalize your video.

Enjoy creative ways to express time's passage. The Super Slow Motion and Slow & Quick Motion let you capture motion in the blink of an eye, at up to 960 fps in NTSC or 1000 fps in PAL (40x super slow motion), or in compelling time-lapse sequences, captured at 1 fps for playback at up to 60x natural speed.

S-Gamut and S-Log shooting gives you more flexibility to custom-tailor your images by performing color grading in post-production. S-Log3 and S-Log2 gamma provide wide dynamic range shooting (1300%), to minimize blown highlights and crushed blacks.

While exposure may be more difficult to judge off the LCD and EVF, exposure zebras are available, indicating areas of overexposure using clear stripes on the image preview. An adjustable level lets you accurately dial in the ideal exposure for everything from skin tones to sunlit landscapes.

For professional workflows and multicamera editing requirements, standard SMPTE Timecode and User Bit can be included with your recordings. With embedded timecode, synchronizing multiple cameras for editing is incredibly simple, while custom eight-digit User Bit codes allow fast indexing and media management on larger projects.

[1"-Type CMOS] I bought this last month at the NYC superstore. Had to wait half a day to get it but well worth the wait. Picture quality is amazing with 4K. I also bought the microphone and lighting with it. Downside, very heavy and big to hold as a consumer camcorder. But this is more prosumer. FPS is low compared to others but, I can live with it. Night shot is great even without using IR but this comes with Nightshot. Plan to make good usage out of this.

[f/2.8 to 4.5] I bought this camera to augment my FDR-AX100 that I have had for 5 years. In addition to having a second 4K camera, I wanted one that could utilize a chip larger that 64 GB. The maximum recording time I get at 4K is a little over 2 hours on a 64 GB chip. Some of the live programs I record are almost 3 hours or longer. I recently used this new camera with a 256 GB chip and had plenty of room on the chip. There are many improvements in this camera over the AX100 including a full-size HDMI port. The menus are more complicated but give additional flexibility over the AX100. Overall I am very satisfied with this camera. Incidentally, I found this camera for a significantly lower price on other web sites, but I bought the camera from B&H because of the good experiences I have had with them in the past. I wanted to buy from a trustworthy dealer that would help me if I had any problems with the camera (which I did not).

[Optical] I record my wife's work; presentations, client interviews. She doesn't like bright lights and wants me to get the right shots, while being as inobtrusive as possible. This camera works well with imperfect light. The colors almost match my Panasonic AVCHD. I can maintain the smallish form factor by recording with the viewer closed; so I also use it as a webcam for Zoom (patching HDMI directly to my laptop).
It's taking some time to get used to the menu operation. The button is virtually hidden just under the viewer hinge. And I was surprised to find a joystick control when touchscreen controls seem ubiquitous, but am getting used to it quite easily.

[Yes] I have had several of these, and also the AX-100 for many years, and with the larger capacity battery, are my grab-and-go cameras.
I highly recommend adding the
Sony ECMXYST1M Stereo Microphone on top, it runs off of the camera battery and will provide wind-protected audio in wide stereo.
When using them for indoor interviews, I add the
Sony ECM-B1M Compact Shotgun Microphone with Digital Audio Interface, when I need to cancel side noise. It fits this camera body perfectly and you select your audio shape.
The AX700 has slow-motion capability that I can't find anywhere else at more than 900 fps. At 1080p
I purchased this one as they are beginning to be hard to come by and I can't find anything else in the price range that performs this good.
4k is excellent, with plenty of dynamic range for post-production.
I do not recommend the still-capture image capability.
I take these out in snowy winter conditions and once back to the studio I drop the entire thing into a tote full of desiccant packs until the temperature balances with the room and all moisture is removed.
Get one now, I highly recommend them and the price is going down as they seem to be getting phased out.
The close-up focus check button is also an excellent feature.
I could not recommend this camera more. I have no reservations about the Sony AX-700
