If you're pining for the old days of center-mount Bolex-style handgrips but also want to live in the current, electronic scene, CAMEOGEAR CameoGrip Retro Handgrip 16" Cablecreated the CAMEOGEAR CameoGrip Retro Handgrip 16" Cableto satisfy your needs. The retro look of the right-handed CameoGrip will pop when attached to your gear, but it also has a comfortable feel and is made of sturdy aluminum, stainless steel, and plastic.

Powered by your camera with a draw of 400mW, the CameoGrip provides electronic functions such as iris, focus, zoom, and run/stop to cameras that allow the function via a LANC port, or it provides focus, zoom, and run/stop to a Multi-Terminal port. It has an 8-pin Hirose connector for camera control, two programmable buttons for your choice of function, one button for run/stop, and a 2-axis joystick to control zoom, iris, or focus. A micro-USB port allows for firmware upgrades.

If you're not a Bolex-style user, a rosette adapter is included to mount the CameoGrip onto other gear such as a shoulder rig, tripod pan arm, or camera cage. An 8-pin Hirose to Multi-Terminal cable is included, and an 8-pin Hirose to 2.5mm LANC cable is available separately. See below for a list of cameras tested with the CameoGrip.

The CameoGrip is compatible with most cameras with LANC ports or Sony cameras with Multi-Terminal ports. Note that iris control is only available via LANC. Sony's Multi-Terminal interface doesn't currently support iris control.

I've used multiple first- and third-party handgrips over the years, and they all had their issues - being too heavy, looking off, blocking access to the battery, and adding too much height to the camera. This grip is extremely lightweight - the grip itself is plastic, the railing is metal, and the flap is rubber. It doesn't block the USB-C port, and the flap is easy to flip to access the battery and memory card. It even has a built-in Arca mount if you need it. As Leica lenses are getting a bit heavier recently, I found this grip to be a great addition to my camera. Yes, it's not cheap, but if you bought an M11, you probably aren't very price-sensitive. 5

[1.335 lb] Solid piece of kit. Has record, zoom and aperture on my c70 (not sure if the zoom works) and two customizable buttons. The buttons few a bit mushy, but honestly the equivalent of a still camera shutter is hard to find. I think they will wear in well and are quite responsive. Doesn’t have a battery, nice solid aluminum frame feels comfortable on a shoulder rig or pan bar. I like the new price too. Will follow up if it hurts the hand over long days, but so far so good. The Bolex style pistol shots are possible, but you need a light camera to avoid twisting. I could see it work with a Sony a7 Series or similar, you’d need to find an anti twist option for something bigger. Great piece of kit, especially if you don’t want to be tied to a specific camera. 5
